Bad Thunderstorm rolled in Sunday

Standard

Big storm went through here in the afternoon on Sunday. I was going to have Brian cut this grass which is in the center of a circle garden (most of the flowers on the perimeter got eaten) but the 3 inches of rain and 50 mph winds knocked it down. Got a lot of water in our basement. We were at a Phillies baseball game while all this happened. Many roads were washed out and we had to come another way home. We didn’t have power after we were home for almost 4 hours. We were using the broom to sweep the water in a hole in the floor in our basement. After the power came back, Bri used the wet vac and put fans around. I have to move things and toss any cardboard that got wet. We haven’t had so much water in our basement for 23 yrs!

Just for fun!

I’m sick with that bad cold that seems to be going around. Had to crash after dinner for a bit, I hardly ever do that. Meds are helping.
We are again expecting a Nor’easter to blow through here-but ‘only’ -10″ this time around. Sean is anticipating not going to work as they usually want to keep you off the roads when the wind is that rough. I hope I feel better tomorrow so I can grab a few items we need.

Homemade pretzels

Homemade pretzels, originally uploaded by DianthusMoon.

Well, Barbara mentioned she made homemade soft pretzels,so of course I being a Philly girl, had to make some. I started them in my bread machine and when I went to turn them out to make the ropes, the dough was really sticky. I followed a recipe, but perhaps the machine over-kneaded the dough. I got it to work, and this is what I got and they weren’t bad! I had to use Italian coarse salt, so you are seeing some herbs on the pretzels.I think I’m making too many things with yeast lately (Di*Giorno pizza today) as our tummies are a little ‘pouf-pouf’ you get my drift.
We did survive the blizzard! Yeah! We had our power, but my mom and brother didn’t for overnight. It was rough. We had a nice sunny day today, so that helped. The guys had to do a terrible lot of digging. We had 2-3 feet snowdrifts around the vehicles. It’s been the snowiest winter in over 100 yrs in these parts. I really look forward to seeing grass again.

Pickle Power!

Standard

We’re having a warm and sticky week. I go sit outside for about 10 minutes and come back in to the a/c. Since the tomatoes went bust, we have been lucky to get the cherry and grape ones, but the cucumbers really took off. Yesterday I made refrigerator pickles with about 7 cups of sliced cukes, vinegar, sugar, salt, chopped onion and dillweed. Needless to say, the guys have been dipping into the container a few times. They are really easy to make!

One of big hibiscus flowers (I grew the plants from seed about 4 yrs ago) broke off, so I brought it in. The deer usually make a meal out of these, but I have some blooming this year.

Today I was tidying up my living room area as that is where I will sit the priest when he visits on Monday as we hardly use this area. My craft stuff is tucked in every nook and cranny since I have so much of it now. Yes, I will downsize and keep things I really like (one of these days).
My brother is working on the air in my van. I just can’t drive with the windows open. My class is having a get-together at the beach at the end of September and Brian said we could attend. It’s in Ocean City, but I’d like to find a room in Cape May and drive over to the get-together. When we were there last week, it was a tease for mom and me as we hardly saw anything as it started to rain and we had to leave.
Guess I’ll be headed to my hometown tomorrow to get my van. Hope the weather holds out. We lost power for two hours last night from mostly gusty winds. That makes 12 hours without power in the last month.

Boom!

Standard

Seems we are in for a week of heat and humidity with pop-up thunder and lighting storms like Friday and Sunday nights! Of course last night we lost power for almost five hours from around 8 pm to 1 am. We were sitting around listening to ‘Delilah’ on the radio (she has the most soothing voice) and doing a round robin playing the ‘ABC’ game with people’s names. Some of the names I picked were ‘too hard to remember’ like Tawny and Wentworth-lol.
I had made a yummy veggie stir fry for dinner before the storm hit. It called for Bird’s*Eye frozen veggies and I used all fresh-a few had to be precooked.

Then I mixed up a Cinna*bon coffee cake we bought at B*Js-we enjoyed that in the dark. I had just cleaned my kitchen floor and one of the counters before the power went. At least I didn’t totally waste my evening.

And the Crocusmia:

~Update-Zoey wanted to know how long I’ve had the Crocusmia-they have only bloomed twice, so I think I planted them in the fall of 2007. The leaves flicker in the breeze and I think the flowers are neat the way they open.

Zipping along

Standard

We’ve been having such nice weather this summer. The humidity is just starting to build over the last few days. It was overcast yesterday, so I retrieved the weed whacker from the shed and went on a mission to do away with that darn Creeping Charlie and grass that was invading my many gardens. An hour and a half later, I was done, though the string part was a nuisance to deal with at times. Today I am tired and have my right hand wrapped up as it was the one holding the piece of machinery up. My left trigger finger was asleep this morning. I’m pretty happy with the way the yard looks this year and using the weed whacker gives it a finished look and saves my back. We were trying to get rid of weeds and grass growing in the cracks of the sidewalk bricks- a never ending job!
That’s basically what I’ve been up to. Hopefully Sean and I will see a movie within the next few days. He’s at the dentist-again-getting a few fillings.
For Zoey-My Crocusmia!

I need to take a photo of them open!

Funky thunderstorms and psychedelic sky

Standard

Yesterday we got bombarded with pop-up thunderstorms, the first around 7 something in the morning. I slept through it as I had about 3 nights of insomnia and I guess my body couldn’t take it anymore. Later, when I was out planting a few annuals, the rumbles and darkening skies sent me in with Cosmo the kitty. He had himself situated under the big evergreen near where I was planting the flowers and was quite content, I hated to bother him. The dish*net guys came about 3 (to make Sean’s tv high def) and the young fellow was up on the roof when the rain was just coming down which made me nervous. After dinner, the sky turned all shades of pink, orange and fuchsia. Everyone local on Face*book was talking about it. Here’s photos taken with the flash on:

I worked on a few ATCs, one was with a ‘special technique’ by using gesso and rubber stamps:

The background is a map. The ‘main design’ is suppose to be dark, like black. Looks like the sky influenced me doesn’t it, but I did these before it changed color.
I woke up today with a very red right eye. I am medicating it with drops that were prescribed for that exact eye a few months back. My head is kind of foggy, so I’m summing it up to allergies. Sean was suppose to get his eyes checked for new contacts, but we have new insurance which Wally World doesn’t accept, so we had to look elsewhere.
We may take a drive to K*Mart to look around. He’s been applying everywhere with no luck. I’m hoping my brother will send him in the right direction since he is a job recruiter (but medical, but he knows the ropes).

Photo Hunt-Walking

A couple taking a walk along a snowy path, originally uploaded by DianthusMoon.
I really like the prospective in this photo. Brian and I were at the Brandywine River Museum for the tribute to Andrew Wyeth back in January-thus the snow. It was a cold day and I was surprised to see this couple walking along the river. It’s a neat place to walk when it’s nice, but they braved the cold to take a look at the swift currents of the river.

Too darn hot!

It feels like we skipped a few months here-went from April right to the end of June! I can’t remember seeing the leaves on some of the trees pop out like they have in the last few days-even the lilac bush is blooming! There is also a pollen explosion which has had me down and out. Allergy medicine seems to be taking the edge off my stuffy head and gooky throat. It definitely is a heat wave and if it goes above 90 tomorrow-it will be only the second time in history it’s happened for 4 days in a row.
I’ve only planted some Sweet William and pansies under my little Japanese maple.
The bugs are even out and I have a few wicked bites already!
People have even played hookie and went to the shore, though the water still feels like April. I guess you can’t get it all.

I made a map for a customer of Brian’s and it will be in the ad in the local paper. I had to change a few things, but here it is-made in Paint Shop Pro-

Be careful about washing your hands because of the Swine flu. There’s cases in NYC and Ohio, so it’s getting closer to us. Scary stuff!

Show and Tell

New Year card 1939, originally uploaded by DianthusMoon.

My one brother is sorting through stuff-mainly photos- in our mom’s house and decided to make scrapbooks of what he is finding. I borrowed a finished one he made for mom and this on of the many quaint things in it. It’s a 70+ year old New Year’s card from my grandfather Alan to my grandmom Ruth. I thought it was so cute. My ‘Pop-pop’ was good at card giving as I’ve seen a few now and then. Wish I had know him-he passed away when I was only two months old.

The temps are climbing here-going to the upper 80s over the weekend! That’s too warm for April! I woke up with a sore throat, just on one side, so I hope I’m not getting a cold. The allergens are in the air too, especially with this spike in temps!
