What we bought at the church bazaar

Standard

I made some ‘brownie kiss’ cupcakes for the church bazaar on Saturday (no photo). They were from scratch and came from ‘Taste of Home’ cupcake email. The batter was really thick, like icing, so I added a little milk to it. It helped a bit. The recipe said to ‘bake until the tops springs back’ and I wish I had taken them out sooner as they were getting a bit dry. We had to try one to make sure they were good-lol.

So I did buy a few things. We bought the 3 lb. bushel (I guess) of mushrooms for $5, and I need to do something with them today or tomorrow. I made a mushroom omelet for dinner Saturday night and they were really fresh and tasty. Any ideas? I’m thinking of marinating them too.

Brian found a seller with quartz crystals and he wanted to buy a piece, so he did for only about $7. My friend on Flickr said you can dig them up all over Arkansas.
Brian bought a quartz crystal today

I bought a few new Christmas pieces that you will see soon.

Sean is safe and sound here at home. He arrived at 11:15 pm on Friday night. I don’t think he’ll drive at night anymore as it’s such a tedious drive. He took his dad and me out to dinner last night to The Olive Garden where Brian and I had their shrimp and chicken Carbonara-yummy! And Sean says he’ll get me a Phillies World Champ t-shirt too.

Sunday’s I Recommend-vol. #4

Standard

Welcome to the fourth edition of ‘I recommend’. As the name implies, this is a share to recommend just about anything you like or have tried. It can be a book, drink, food, movie, music CD-anything. Mister Linky will open to another page (that’s how it works on WordPress). Please add your link there and don’t forget to leave me a comment here.

It’s that time of year when we are closed up indoors and subject to getting sick, especially with a cold or the flu. Brian and I got a flu shot a few weeks ago, the first in many years. It’s not a bad idea. That lead me to think of other things that help with your colds and bugs.
First of all, found this on elise.com

Mom’s Cold-Season Chicken Soup Recipe
Ingredients
4 cups of homemade chicken stock
Fat from the homemade chicken stock
1 yellow onion, peeled and roughly diced
2 carrots, sliced in half-inch slices (about the same amount as onion)
2 celery stalks, sliced in 1/4 inch slices (about the same amount as the onion)
1 Tbsp fresh parsley leaves
1 Tbsp of chopped greens from a green onion (green part of the green onion).
1/4 teaspoon poultry seasoning
1/8 teaspoon (a pinch) of crushed red pepper flakes (or a small pinch of cayenne)
Salt and pepper to taste
Method

In a 4 qt saucepan, heat a tablespoon of chicken fat (that has risen to the surface and solidified from your homemade stock) on medium high heat. If you don’t have enough chicken fat, you can add some olive oil. Sauté the vegetables in the fat until the carrots are almost done. While you are sautéing the vegetables, add the seasoning – the poultry seasoning, the crushed red pepper flakes, a pinch of salt and a pinch of pepper. Seasoning like this during the cooking of the vegetables brings out their flavor. According to my mother, crushed red pepper flakes or cayenne is very helpful for a cold, which is why it is part of this recipe. Add the 4 cups of stock. Bring to a low simmer. Add the fresh parsley and green onion greens. Check seasoning and adjust to taste.

Serve with (at least) day old crusty French bread.

Serves 3.

My Grandmom Ruth swore by this:

vicks

When I took Sean to a local pediatrician, she thought that using this was funny-an old wives tale! I still use it in the wintertime-it’s really soothing in my opinion. It opens up your head. You rub a little dap of it around your collarbone.
My grandmom also used a ‘mustard plaster’ for severe chest congestion. She swore it saved her mother-in-law’s life one time. You take an old sheet- (about 2′ x 2′) and folded it up to the size of a small pillow. I believe she mixed veggie oil with dry mustard in a pot to warm it up into a paste (the link uses egg whites or flour). She then spread it on the inside of the folded sheet. She probably wrapped in it plastic wrap or a small towel and placed it on your chest. It got warm, but it does break up mucus.
We just added this to the medicine closet:
airborne

I may have used it once, but Sean used it when Brian and I got the terrible sinus colds around New Year’s (this year) and he didn’t get it!
Upping your Vitamin C intake is good. Get some hand sanitizer and keep some in your car too.
I swear by Sudafed for a stuffy head as a last resort. I also use BioAllers spray, a homeopathic nasal spray. Salt water spray is good too.
Hope these help you out! And do share other remedies here.

Lavender waterlily
I thank goodness for the ‘search’ feature in my Flickr photos. I knew I used the word reflection a few times. This was taken at one of my favorite and most photographed place on earth-Longwood Gardens. The waterlily ponds knock your socks off! I was told by the caretaker of the ponds, a man standing in the pond at the time, that they dye the water black.

I can’t wait to see what other people do with this.

Show & Tell plus some gifties

These are my vintage pins featuring Aurora Borealis rhinestones-which are my favorites. I found most of them on eBay over the last few years. I thought I’d show these as there may have been a Northern light phenomenon in the local area.  A scientist from the Franklin Institute said that may be what has happened, but he’s going to look into it more. Here’s the story about it.

Gifts for my birthday

I received some lovely things in the mail too! Karin, my friend from Illinois sent the cute pampered card with the robe and slippers. She enclosed a gift card for Bath and Bodyworks inside.

Angela from NY sent a handmade card with lovely flowers. She made a miniature card to fit inside a pretty card box she made for me. She used one of the adorable flower fairies as the main design. She also sent the cute dolly that says ‘You are sew special’. Barbara from the Netherlands sent a sweet handmade scissor fob that she bought from Deborah Thorpe of Midsummer Night Designs (I think etsy.com)which she turned from a necklace to a fob. It has a sweet sampler on it. Donna, a flickr pal sent me an altered tin featuring a baby in a nest. Donna used vintage jewelry in her art, so that ties in with showing you my pins. : ) Thanks ladies, I love them all!

I went to the dentist and got the filling replaced that was just replaced at the end of August-no charge-he even said he could have done a better job on it. It looks a ton better too. Also went and did most of my Thanksgiving dinner shopping and plum wore myself out! I had to only pay $6 for a $23-20 pound bird! I never cooked one that big before, but we like leftovers here!

Sean will be heading home Saturday night after the last football game of the season. We aren’t crazy about him driving at night, but he’ll have a pal with him.

My birthday dinner

My birthday November 19th, originally uploaded by DianthusMoon.

It was so cold tonight! We are lucky such a nice restaurant is only about 5 miles away. We practically had the place to ourselves for a while, hence the photos. The waiter was nice enough to take our photo too. I didn’t see lobster tail on the interesting menu. I decided not to get the prime rib ‘special’. My oh my, was that an expensive dinner, plus it could have been a bit firmer, so I brought some home. Brian had flounder and salmon on a bed of spinach (he isn’t a big fan of the green stuff). I had some shredded zucchini on my salad. Bri had a Caesar salad. I had my favorite cocktail (like my second of the year)-an Apricot Sour. Try one sometime.

Bri bought me a yellow cake with fudge icing. Let’s just say I’m glad I had Rolaids and peppermint tea in the house-for both of us! Bri wasn’t really up to par today. He gave me a lovely pearl necklace-not the real round pearls, but it’s really pretty, I’ll model it soon.

This was also the 26th anniversary of our engagement. : )

Here’s a recipe for an Apricot Sour. One of my former bosses introduced me to it back in the early 1980s and I get one everytime I go to a fancy restaurant:
Apricot Sour Recipe
Ingredients
2 oz Apricot Brandy
1 oz Lemon Juice
1/2 tsp Superfine Sugar
Pour the apricot brandy, lemon juice and sugar into a cocktail glass half-filled with ice cubes. Shake well, and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with an orange wedge and a maraschino cherry, and serve.

Dianne as a baby, originally uploaded by DianthusMoon.

Another year already! I thought you’d enjoy seeing a child of the 60s. I was almost born in 1960. I didn’t know my maternal grandfather as he passed away when I was only 6-7 weeks old, which is my age in the very yellowed photo. That’s my Uncle Don holding me who I talk about now. He’s 85 and living alone (though his wife is in a nursing home). The large photo is me when I’m 1 day old. I do have my mouth open in the photo, not surprising as mom loves to tell everyone I was the loudest baby in the nursery. : )

The next few shots-I’m about 3 when we were living in Florida, my 7th birthday and brother #2’s 6th birthday (or was in 7th and 8th?-lol) and my 21st birthday with my mom. Those Polaroids tend to crack. The big onion was a cookie jar-dirt cheap at the pottery factory in Williamsburg, VA.

Little me about age 3

I can still name most of the kids: Stevie, Donnie, Dianne, Gary, Donnie B.,Valerie, Betsy (the little girl behind me, my BFF as the time), Laurie, Julie, Julie, Caroline (my cousin). The ones I don’t remember were the siblings of our friends.
Our combined birthday party about 1965

Only remembrance of 21st birthday
We’re going out to dinner today. I have some gifts to open from mom and Brian. Mom always gives me too many things which frustrates my husband.

Many thanks to Barbara, Angela, Terri and Kay for your cards and/or gifts. I did thank you in an email too.

Update-About 7:38 the front door slammed shut and woke me up! I had mentioned wanting a bagel with cream cheese for breakfast. Bri went to Dunkin Donuts (also getting ripped off on how much they were) and bought 4 bagels and 6 donuts. I did tell him he woke me up and that all nice measures should be followed all the way through. I do appreciate him going out in the bitter cold to make me happy.

Zoey-not sure if I’ll bring the camera in the restaurant as it may be a bit snooty. I do have a camera phone-well mine needs a new battery, but Bri has his too. We’ll see. : )

Heard my sister-in-law got Pink eye from my niece who was getting over it yesterday. Col fixed both my mom’s hair and my hair then. I have antibiotic drops I’ll use a few times today just as a precautionary measure.

Darn Premonitions!

Standard

I do this all the time. I’m sure you do too. Like the other day I said to myself-‘I sure hope my teeth hold out for the next few months until the new year rolls around’. Did I get my wish-no! A large gum filling came lose after trying to eat meat from ‘that’ grocery store I complained about a few weeks back. I think the dentist will cut me a break if I get in there before the 3 months is up-of course that is around Thanksgiving. Now do I want to go to the dentist tomorrow or Wednesday-no! I don’t have pain and I have a hair appointment as I want to look younger on my birthday. : )
I have on a cute night gown I got at Wally World for $8. It’s watermelon pink with ‘Shine’ in silver letters surrounded my glittery stars. I got some slacks which are a little big. I need to take the waist in a little.
I was telling Bri I think the belly buster thingie helped my right shoulder blade (that bothered me off and on for 3 months) along with the muscle spasms in my stomach area. I try to wear it everyday as does he. He’s doing sit-ups and I think there is a difference in his tummy-it looks tighter!
So I’ll be going to my sister-in-law’s and then out with mom for a bit. I hope my tooth is good.

Almost a carbon copy

Saturday Night Live was a bit raunchy the other night, but a certain sketch had us rolling on the floor because of the theme of the sketch (how a family kissed each other a zillion times), but the dad in the sketch looked just like brother #2 who I don’t see that often:

fred2

This is comic actor Fred Armisen (I think he’s still a ‘friend’ of mine on MySpace)

And this is my brotherdon

I got the capture of Fred by using the ‘print screen’ button when we were viewing the sketch on the SNL archives. It’s like Fred used a photo of my brother to create his character! Bri and I almost fell of the sofa and chair when we saw this.

Speaking of the sketch, Bri’s family is the kissing family. Kiss, kiss, kiss! We aren’t as much, more huggers I think. I do kiss my mom on the cheek when I say good bye.

Not too much going on this weekend. Had a nice little shopping trip Sunday night at Walmart as I hadn’t been shopping for a while. I told Bri I would save him from going shopping for me. We are probably going to go to the Mendenhall Inn on Wednesday. They have a prime rib special that night. I’ve lived here for over 22 yrs and never have been there. My high school would have their proms there (and I didn’t go to the proms).

Just made the reservation online using Open Table. com (from the Inn’s website)

Anyway, I think I’ll be finished a cross stitch project that has a 1988 date on the bottom of it soon. That will make 4 projects I have to finish into something!

Also need to get my free turkey and plan my Thanksgiving menu. I may try a few things from the latest issue of Martha Stewart’s Everyday food.

Here are gadgets and an appliance that we think are pretty awesome:

Our first digital camera was a Canon Powershot S30.

canonps

I thought it was pretty cool and so portable! It was the first camera where we didn’t have to use a viewfinder. One issue is this that the batteries need charging all the time. And you can’t shrink down the photos without making the image less crisp (that could happen with any camera though). Save your photos at their original size and burn them to a disk! I still use the camera as it has the video feature which is nice.

Brian read and read camera magazines and in December, 2006 we purchased a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi.

canon-eos

So here I was faced with using camera with a viewfinder again which took some getting use to. But the photo quality is amazing! It was pricey, but a dream come true. Our camera still ranks #1 on Flickr for Canon cameras. There is a newer one out now, so if you can find the Rebel XTi second hand, you are getting a good investment. I’ve had people tell me I have a great camera just by seeing me carrying it around my neck! I can take pretty decent photos off the tv like this:

Sweet Glinda

An appliance I recommend is the GE Spacesaver Microwave.
Embossed tin back
It is so great to have a special nook for a microwave after having one take up counter or table space over the years! It has a rack if you want to heat up two things at a time (haven’t tried it yet). It reheats things well in general. I believe it was fairly inexpensive. My other appliances are Magtag. They are nice, but the dishwasher is nothing like the GE I had for all those years before we remodeled. I like the size of the frig, but sometimes it freezes my milk or other beverages if you get them in the way of vent inside.

Hope my post helps and please feel free to add your blog link and recommendations.

I just put on my CD player and it is loaded with Christmas music (from last year!). Josh Groban is singing his heart out right now!

Tulum, Mexico, originally uploaded by DianthusMoon.

This was a long time ago (1984), but I’ll remember the trip on the bus through the jungle to see these ruins. We saw little huts with tv antennas. It was really difficult to climb the steps of this Mayan ruin in Tulum, Mexico. We got a good view of the Carribean there and it was so crystal clear. It was our honeymoon. We were staying in Cancun, but took the trip here one day.

(I finally used a drawing tablet I got almost a year ago-hence my siggie. Does anyone else use one of these?)
