Seeing clearly

Standard

Around 10:30 pm last night the phone rang. I jumped a bit as I was settled on the sofa doing some stitching and watching ‘Brothers and Sisters’. It was my mom and she said she is starting to see better and wanted me to know so I could rest soundly. I think she wanted to just ‘tell’ someone and she thought of me her night owl child. I was so pleased to hear this, beyond happy! She’s  had a rough time with that eye, and I am angry it took her going to another eye doctor to fix the problem so quickly. The doctor who did the implant called her yesterday on Sunday. Is he feeling guilty? I don’t know, but I read that less than 1% of people who get the new lens get an infection. What the heck happened there? And she isn’t seeing floaters anymore either. Just the thing I needed to hear and I wanted to share.

I was playing with my photo editing programs. I added a background of tulle (thanks to a Flickr contact for that) and tweaked the little flower girl from the wedding last week in PSP and Adobe.  tulle6

My mom

Standard

Just a short post to let you know that my mom still has a bad infection in her right eye, which was the worst one when she had cataract surgery a few months ago. Yesterday she had to go to the eye doctor and now later this afternoon, I have to take her to a retinal specialist. I’m hoping he just puts her on antibiotics. The infection is playing havoc with her glaucoma too. We only have to go to the end of her town to the newer doctor. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers as she’s had a rough 3 weeks and is scared.
I worked on my Christmas cards yesterday-got them printed at the copy shop and did a little cutting and gluing on them. I’ll be sending them off in the next few days. I’ll show you how they turned out soon.
~Update~
This was a really long day of sitting and waiting. My mom saw the new eye doctor and does have to have surgery to remove the infected jelly like substance called vitreous humor fill the space between lens and retina behind her lens implant. She also needs a stitch in a tear in the corner of her cornea. He wouldn’t give us a clear answer how she got an infection there. He’ll also inject the area with antibiotics. This will probably happen next Wednesday. I’m praying she’ll be able to see out of that eye again as it’s just a blur right now.

On her way

Standard

Just a quick post to let you know Sean has gone to get his grandmom and is bringing her here for a few days. She had a scare this morning with pain in her right eye and called me briefly, not giving me too much info, thus scaring me a bit. She called later to say she has an infection behind her new implant in her eye. She had some drops, but the doctor gave her other ones.
Trying to get things done like running to the produce place and baking pies (I didn’t make them from scratch). I wanted to try a few new veggie recipes, but the place was out of Brussel Sprouts. I drove by the grocery store and saw the parking lot and thought fresh green beans would work fine. And on top of all this, I have a groin pull from sitting on the floor wrapping that humongous vase! It’s better, but I was hurting everytime I opened the oven to look at the pies. I got Mincemeat for the men (Bri’s dad loves it-ick) and pumpkin. No Cool Whip either.
Looks like pizza for dinner. ; )
I hope your Thankgiving Eve is going well.

Plugging away

Standard

Seems like I’m moving in slow motion today (Tuesday). All I managed to do was clear off the coffee table in the family room and move some stuff around in the basement trying to find a box for the below named gift. The box I found was not that great, but I added some stickers and pretty gray pearl tissue paper to it inside-much better. I did make a spaghetti dinner and some banana chocolate chip coffeecake (pictured below). My main thing tonight was watching the finale of ‘Dancing with the Stars’ (I won’t say who won for west coast readers). That is one awesome show to watch in HD. I sat and went through the Lakeside.com huge Christmas catalog and ordered about 19 things, a few things for most of the people on my list (and me to save Bri). I did order these to split up with mom. I have to hop over to Amazon (probably on Friday) and order a few things for Sean. I will then hit Wally World and Tuesday Morning and call it a holi’day’-hopefully. : )
No word from mom yet. I so hate disagreements!

Shopping and a stitching finish

Standard

I’m posting late as I just did finish my swan and waterlily cross stitch piece. I believe I started it around 13 years ago. It wasn’t an easy stitch, but it was on 14 count aida (before I started stitching on other nicer fabric). I think it turned out pretty. It came with a frame too! I have the chart up for grabs for anyone who would like it!

Also had to go shopping for a wedding gift for Saturday. We decided that a $25 gift card was too cheap and a $50 one was too much. I got a German made lead crystal vase at a price somewhat in between price. I plan to add a little note  to remind the groom that he should always remember their late November nuptials with a big bouquet of gorgeous blooms. Glad I found something.

I did buy a few Christmas gifts too. I bought my niece, Bri and my mom things. Sean bought a few gifts at Wally World tonight. This year we aren’t going overboard because we don’t really need anything. We are planning on concentrating on the decorations and food. : )

Had a phone spat with my mom and she hung up on me. She bought her new eyeglasses at the eye doctor’s office and in my opinion was terribly overcharged for them. I was going to take her to one of the stores I’ve used in the past. My new eyeglasses are from Wally World and I just got a compliment on them. I think I paid half of what she did. She’s talking about having her friend Jim move back in. That would infuriate my brothers even more. I know it’s her house, but the situation was not good when he lived there as he is a messy person. I swear it’s always something.

Swan and Waterlilies Cross stitched piece

Thanks to my friend Carole over at Pea’s Corner for the lovely birthday gifts-a cute basket for bread or muffin with a red cloth and bells that says ‘Jingle All the Way’, a miniature coffee cup candle, Christmas themed cheese spreaders and some yummy soap. I plan to make muffins out of a gazillion bananas I have, so I will show you the goodies later.

Not quite the big 5-0

Dianne as a baby, originally uploaded by DianthusMoon.

Another year already! I thought you’d enjoy seeing a child of the 60s. I was almost born in 1960. I didn’t know my maternal grandfather as he passed away when I was only 6-7 weeks old, which is my age in the very yellowed photo. That’s my Uncle Don holding me who I talk about now. He’s 85 and living alone (though his wife is in a nursing home). The large photo is me when I’m 1 day old. I do have my mouth open in the photo, not surprising as mom loves to tell everyone I was the loudest baby in the nursery. : )

The next few shots-I’m about 3 when we were living in Florida, my 7th birthday and brother #2’s 6th birthday (or was in 7th and 8th?-lol) and my 21st birthday with my mom. Those Polaroids tend to crack. The big onion was a cookie jar-dirt cheap at the pottery factory in Williamsburg, VA.

Little me about age 3

I can still name most of the kids: Stevie, Donnie, Dianne, Gary, Donnie B.,Valerie, Betsy (the little girl behind me, my BFF as the time), Laurie, Julie, Julie, Caroline (my cousin). The ones I don’t remember were the siblings of our friends.
Our combined birthday party about 1965

Only remembrance of 21st birthday
We’re going out to dinner today. I have some gifts to open from mom and Brian. Mom always gives me too many things which frustrates my husband.

Many thanks to Barbara, Angela, Terri and Kay for your cards and/or gifts. I did thank you in an email too.

Update-About 7:38 the front door slammed shut and woke me up! I had mentioned wanting a bagel with cream cheese for breakfast. Bri went to Dunkin Donuts (also getting ripped off on how much they were) and bought 4 bagels and 6 donuts. I did tell him he woke me up and that all nice measures should be followed all the way through. I do appreciate him going out in the bitter cold to make me happy.

Zoey-not sure if I’ll bring the camera in the restaurant as it may be a bit snooty. I do have a camera phone-well mine needs a new battery, but Bri has his too. We’ll see. : )

Heard my sister-in-law got Pink eye from my niece who was getting over it yesterday. Col fixed both my mom’s hair and my hair then. I have antibiotic drops I’ll use a few times today just as a precautionary measure.

Mama’s here

Standard

It’s a cold and wet day here in southeastern, PA. I was going to mom’s yesterday and she decided she wanted to come here! I am a bit nervous when she wants to drive her 17 yr old car here and she just had her eye surgeries. I thought she’s be here around 3 and when 4 rolled around, I kept checking the door.  She got here around 4:15! She said she had to wait until she felt better and she had to stop for gas. I was going to cook something she brought, but it was too late for that, so we ordered take-out and I will cook the pork chops tonight. I then went to the food store after dinner-did some power shopping in about 30 minutes! Mom was in Peebles store and was checking out when I came to find her. Unfortunately, one of her eyes was really paining her during the night. I did see her rubbing it earlier in the evening. It’s better this morning, but really bloodshot. I got the artificial tears for her and she is using them. My one eye had been really red a few days ago.It may be the house is dry or the cat hair too.

I guess I’ll go do some cooking soon. Mom also brought huge chicken breasts that I will boil for chicken salad.

I’ll have a really old WIP cross stitch to share soon. I seem to be better just working on something until I finish it. Kinda reminiscent of the charity stitching that I hope to start up again soon.

Like a lead balloon

Week #2 of ‘I Recommend’ had no participates. I’m thinking Sunday isn’t a good day. Anyone have any suggestions? I thought it would be fun. You can share anything you like or have tried. A recipe, a car!, a book. Anything!! : )

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yesterday I decided to tackle some tidying up in the bedrooms. Since your bedrooms should be the ‘cleanest’ rooms in the house ‘ *cough, cough*! I used my trusty static duster (I already recommended it a few weeks back) and went to town. I even went through old make-up and tossed eye shadows and lipstick (since I mainly wear lip gloss now). I did this because I got an all new Ulta make-up kit (pink one for $19.95) as an early birthday gift ( the store is nice, but the women who work there are so snooty). I also cleaned out a basket I keep next to the bed for books. I had really stuck a ton of stuff in it. I ran across some baby photos of me and Sean-I do think it was actually from the hospital when Sean was born! What? So I’ll scan them to share. I remember mom bringing in my baby photos to show Bri and his parents and I must have stuck it in the basket. Shame on me! Oh, even the hospital bracelets were in the envelope.
Here’s some:
With my new little guy Sean
Bri tried to get the leaves up with the attachment for the mower, but they were so wet, they were sticking in the chute that leads to the containers. He said he cut a lot of them up. To me, leaves in any form kill the grass. I’ll have to see what he did. The front yard looks ok. I wanted to know if he had added any to the garden to add some goodies to the depleted soil and he said no. Ah the joys of a too big yard with too big trees.
I’m not going to get any bloodwork done until next year either. I told myself I wouldn’t do this, but then I wasn’t feeling good most of the time. I’ll tell you it has to be stress mainly. I have my mom saying weird stuff. I can’t beg for my brothers to bother with her. They can be asses if they chose to be-I think it’s awful. Letting a 78 yr old lady take trash down a 100 ft stone driveway twice a week! And that’s just one thing they don’t do. Aren’t guys suppose to take care of their moms? I told Sean he better dang make sure he does! ; ) I was reading a forwarded email from my uncle about how a lady who had had a double mastectomy and her faithful dog ‘Lucky’ had been sorrowing after her while she slept. Lucky brought all his most cherished possessions and put them on the lady. Lucky gave her a reason to get better. My mom needs a Lucky.
Anyone know a good gift for a second marriage? We aren’t really close to Bri’s cousin, but he invited us to the wedding. Since we missed his brother’s gala wedding a few years ago (because Bri’s dad, his uncle wouldn’t attend), we thought we’d go to this one since his dad isn’t well-so he has an excuse.
Christmas 1960
121_2145
The first photo is of a mom (my mom) without a husband. She is trying to make the best of it because it is Christmastime, 1960. She has a 6.5 yr old, a 1 yr old and a newborn.
Below that is my wedding photo of our entire family at the time. Can you pick out my mom and two brothers from above? I am so happy we had this photo taken (April 14, 1984) as three of the matriarchs are now deceased and the patriarchs haven’t been well lately
Watch this space
Standard
…for my latest cross stitch finish. For some reason, I diligently stitched on it since late July, to early August until now. I have a few stitches left. The designer didn’t use quality paper (yet charged $10 for the chart) and many of the symbols were terrible to read or rubbed off. I had to improvise a few stitches, but you can’t tell. And I did use the tape that Lee sent me-thanks again. I want to do a quick Halloween design next.
I went down to my hometown Tuesday afternoon and got my hair done and so did mom! Colleen gave mom a reverse bob-very cute. We went to Olive Garden for dinner (mom’s had the same tummy bug or whatever I had and I wanted to give her a treat) and then hit Micheal’s Craft store. I didn’t pick up anything to buy for a long time, then I saw a ‘now you can knit socks’ book, but didn’t see the correct weight of yarn in the vast collection in the store, so I scraped that(but it’s something I want to try). I purchased some stickers and papers-some with a Christmas flair!
I’m still thinking about having a table at the church Christmas bazaar, but then it may be better to have a yard sale  which wouldn’t cost me $35. Our basement really needs to be tidied up.  I had a sale years ago, but not sure that people want craft books and baskets. It’s a lot of work too.
So watch this space! : )
Update!! It took me 2 hours to finish this. Then I washed and pressed it. Introducing Sleeping Kitty by Ellen Maurer Stroth:
I can’t believe a strand of my own hair showed up so well too!
My inspiration to do this piece, my own brown tabby Cosmo!
