Happy St. Paddy’s day!

Standard

As many of you know, I got my DNA test done and Irish came in second! I am still wrapping my head around that one! So as a ‘newly’ found out Irish lass, I wish you a great green day! I’ll be adding the corned beef to the crock pot shortly!

Here I am in my green outfit I wore to Lancaster on a little trip with Sean. The flower is a vintage one from the shop in NYC. I need to make a proper clip out of it.

Which turned out to be probably my last shopping trip for a while, Sean and I went up to Lancaster and we stopped in Intercourse, PA at ‘The Old Candle Barn’. This was a display in one of the rooms which I fell in love with. I am going to try and replicate this a bit (heck I probably have most of the things in this photo, I bought the trio mini vase set but in clear-like $8).

Brian and I are going down to Maryland next weekend. Remember the trip we were suppose to take last November for my birthday? It’s all paid for and we had to use it by next month, so we are going. We get our breakfast, so will have to do a few meals. I am happy to take photos, I don’t have to go to town buying things. He is getting a pretty cool gift I bought last Saturday at Big Lots. I think he will enjoy it as it wasn’t expensive.

This of course implies to my only child and son Sean who turns 25 today! We were able to spend the day together on Sunday, the three of us, or ‘The Mod Squad’ as Brian sometimes refers to us when we are doing a bit of mall walking. He decided to drive us up an hour to Lancaster to ‘The Park City Mall’, one I was to years ago. Brian didn’t remember going, but maybe we did. I definitely remember going with my mom and family and getting a t-shirt made, the kind of place where they press the design on for you. Anyway, it was a bit crowded and reminded us of other malls closer to us. He did buy himself some jeans and a watch. He picked up and thumbed through a book about neat places to visit and I made Bri go back and get it for him. And we got him the Phillies division championship shirt.
We were going to hit ‘The Olive Garden’, but it was really crowded, so we went to a smorgasbord place and he liked that. I was a bit stuffed and felt blah, but some Chamomile and mint tea helped me when I got home.

Moon over farm near Mount Joy

Moon over farm near Mount Joy, originally uploaded by DianthusMoon.

We went on a little day trip like we did last year up to central PA. It was just Brian and me this year. First we went to York (about 64 miles one way) where I did some stash building at the Heirloom rubber stamp and paper show. I felt a bit rushed last year as I had two guys waiting on me, but I was more relaxed this year as Bri didn’t mind waiting. We then went to a book store and emporium in downtown York (which was the first capital of the country). I would have liked to taken a few more shots of the historic buildings there. Here’s a sampling in the area of the book store.

The book store was packed with merchandise. Since I had just browsed the other place for 2 hours, I was a bit bushed in the book store.
York Emporium and used books
I did find a ‘surprise’ for someone and will mail it along soon.
We then went about 20 miles (toward home a bit) and went to Bube’s Brewery (the first syllable is pronounced ‘boo’) and we ate burgers outside on the patio.

They were pretty good but we waited for them and for the bill way too long. We had seen a Turkey Hill place that was new (their specialty is ice cream) on the way to the restaurant, but they had closed a half hour earlier.

We got to the Strasberg ice cream place 5 minutes before they closed for our desserts. Bri got caramel and I got pumpkin. So we had a full day and it was nice to see something different.

Here’s my post about the trip last year.

Gap, PA clock tower, originally uploaded by DianthusMoon.

Sean and I went up to Lancaster later in the afternoon. I got this photo of the Gap, PA clock tower from the car and edited it right before we went around the corner to head toward Strasberg first. The top part was lit up at night. My phone was acting a bit wonky-seems you have to have 4G and the 3G just barely picks up anything. I tried to take other photos (got a few) but then I got a gazillion error messages. Must be all the open space.
We stopped by sweet ‘Hidden Acres’ farm and the little Amish lady who waited on me before was selling off stuff for buy one get one free. She also had a table of freebies. I got about 15 things, plus a wicker plant stand for about $23! She gave me some green tomatoes and I may try and ripen them up. Her daughter was doing busy work pulling weeds out of pots of hostas. The highlight of going there was seeing a foal less than a week old-so sweet. I took a few photos, but only one is good. They were in their shelter and when we stopped to look, the mama came out and paraded the baby for a bit and went back to the shelter. Ahhhh.
Good view of the foal
We did some shopping. The Gap and Banana Republic had almost everything in their stores on sale for 40% off-even the already marked down things. Also got some goodies at Bath and Body Works and the Christmas Tree Shops (they have a huge one up there). Sean cashed in quarters from Pop-pop-so we had over $80 to play with. : ) Why not? We ate at Red Robin, but I was still hungry as I thought my chicken and salad would be bigger, so we stopped at a Creamery in Strasberg and got ice cream-Sean got coconut and me lemon chiffon. I was below calorie count, but that was about all. Ugh. I walked down the street and tooks some photos of this old town. There was a tour going on with a young man in a cape with a lantern, We should do that sometime like Carole and Steve do!

It was a nice time spent with Sean. : ) He went out to meet friends right after we got home!

Hidden Acres Amish Nursery, originally uploaded by DianthusMoon.

Today I did get out to the doctor’s office to sign the release papers to the new doctor(s). Since I drove all the way out there, I decided to take a drive around to look for nurseries. It was about 90 degrees out-was I crazy to go driving around? I was ‘into’ adding to foursquare, the phone app that says where you are going. I checked into 5 places, but not the little nursery pictured here-too remote. I left the hospital and headed to Oxford, past Lincoln University and Tastykake Bakery. I decided to stop at Dollar General and Rita’s Water Ice (had Mango and Peach Gelato). I went by one small perennial place but it was a bit on the small side. I decided to stop at a thrift shop and bought a few little things. Will show the sweet mermaid decoration from I think I the 50s or 60s. I asked the young man in there about nurseries and he said there was an Amish one down the hill and to look for a sign. I drove by the road and had to go through a auto shop, down a road and then up a gravel road and found ‘Hidden Acres’. There was no one around and I was looking around for about 10 minutes. I could have helped myself (ha ha), but just got in the car to leave and the Amish lady came around the corner and she said she was at the house. I think most of what I bought was between $1-$3. : ) She helped me to the car and I had a big bag of plastic trays and pots in the back I was taking to Lowes (they recycle) and she took them. Glad to help.
My last stop was for white pizza for Sean and me as Brian was going to his dad’s house for a visit. After dinner I planted a few more pots of things. The air was so thick I could almost slice it.
So I had a nice time. I’ll be able to share more photos when I drive around as I don’t mind snapping photos with a cellphone. : )
I’m thinking of going to Longwood Gardens tomorrow before noon as the exterminator is suppose to come between 2-4.
Right now we have a thunderstorm watch-not a surprised!

Alice 4" x 4" Collage Card, originally uploaded by DianthusMoon.

I bet a gazillion blogs have started off with a title like that. : ) It’s pretty neat you have to admit.
I’ve been playing catch up on my collages. I made it a little easier on myself as the one half here was an ATC I made up in York, PA at the rubber stamp/craft show on Saturday. I was happy to get a chance to make something, though this was a cuppa tea for me. The lady whose booth this was must have been tired or something as she was a bit sarcastic. I think she was impressed by how I used the tall Alice here. I put the tag behind her head. I do like what I added to the side-the ‘Red Queen’ and the teapot and animals.
I made this next collage to represent the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire that we attended as well! It was really a spur of the moment thing to go. We had gone to Bube’s Brewery as a side trip as the guys left me off at the show for a few hours. They were told not to eat much, but got hoagies which spoiled their appetites to eat at Bube’s in Mount Joy. Rats. So we ventured down the road to the Faire and went in! Brian and I had been there in about 1984 or earlier and that’s the last time, so Sean got a treat as well. I will do a full post about it next. The stained glass is a embellishment piece. The fairy is a new stamp that’s been embossed. The background is the map to the faire grounds.

Two for yesterday

I made these cards within half an hour of each other! When Sean, Mom and me were in Lancaster and I always love to check out the wall of brochures which seem to be in every place you go. This one for Wilbur’s Chocolate in Lititz, PA really caught my eye-perfect for a collage. And we’ve never been here-my goodness that’s just crazy! Must remember to go and do some sampling. ; )
Heart/Love 4" x 4" Collage

The heart one was easy. I made the heart a few months ago. It’s balsa wood with an old text page on top. I just got the scrapbooking paper in the craft warehouse. I found the tag ‘kicking around’ and added that too.
One of my online challenges is to use these 4 colors on an ATC-burgundy, navy blue, gray and mossy green. I asked Sean to get me paint chips at Wally World. He was on the phone as I read off each color describing each-like your room (moss), like a glass of red wine, etc.. He got the blue one right-that’s it. So I’m thinking and looking. The paint chips would have been so much easier. I’ll share when I’m finished the card.

Typical Amish Farm & a little celebration

Typical Amish Farm, originally uploaded by DianthusMoon.

We took mom out on a day trip on Wednesday. Sean was the driver as he wasn’t really interested in seeing the first place that we wanted to stop at-the Flower & Craft Warehouse. He dropped us off and went for a drive and ended up at a Farmer’s Market! Too bad he didn’t stay with us as they have tables set up with newspapers, magazines and a few tvs for the significant others who aren’t into crafts and flowers. He did have to come in later to find us. Hee hee!
The scenery was just beautiful, the weather perfect and the skies so blue. You do see mile after mile of farms just like this one.
Mom and I headed to the ‘bargain’ room first. I got lots of little things and things to alter. I got a square wreath that looks awesome in the family room. The colors are perfect! It was under $4. I got a S’mores Christmas house with an attached tree and ornaments-$11.
Mom picked out two things as gifts (I have another gift for her next Thursday). She picked out a festive sunflower table display after much hemming and hawing. She also picked out a glittery pumpkin. I know seasonal, but she will remember her day by these.
After shopping, we went to Shady Maple Smorgasbord. I was really hungry! Their specials were prime rib and ham. For $17 you get a bargain. If we could have taken mom up on her birthday, she would have been free! Mom didn’t eat that great. She makes the mistake of filling up her plate and then that takes her appetite away. I don’t have that problem-I just want to taste everything. Sean said he wasn’t hungry, but the second time around he ate more than salad and cauliflower.
Now get this, we stopped at Wally World. I stayed in the car and Sean got his hair cut (so short he looks like he’s in the military) and mom had to use the rest room. I was glad to relax and people watch.
Mom went home around 3 today and said she loved seeing the sights and going to these couple of places.

Virginia Tech tragedy

Standard

Just when you think the world is spinning on a safer axis, something like this happens. We don’t know all the details, but 33 people are dead-the worst in US college campus history. Sean knows a freshman named Stephanie who attends the school (from his old high school). He has a message in her Facebook to make sure she is ok.

Update-Stephanie was home for the weekend and is still there-thank goodness!

I can’t even write anymore about this nor could I watch any news about it.

While I was sitting in my quiet and cold house this morning (we had no power from about 8:45 am to 12:15 and it’s still risky that it will go off again), I was reading an update on the opening of the new schoolhouse in Nickel Mines in People magazine. About $4 million in donations were sent from all over the world as that tragic event last October touched so many people. They have art work from some of the deceased girls hanging up in memory of them. And it’s called the ‘New Hope’ school. The magazine even quotes a minister from Quarryville, where Brian works.

Feeling better today-sure didn’t waste those 3 hours earlier. I finally wrote out my cards for the Make A Child Smile kids (see side bar) and sorted out stickers, etc for my art projects. If the power had remained off, I was going to clean my bedroom-well, I guess I can still do that.

; )
