Thursday Thunks

Standard

1. What the hell were you thinking?
I know, I totally skipped these questions last week because they were so strange-lol

2. The tornado sirens go off in your neighborhood – what do you do?
Get everyone down the basement.

3. Give us a recipe.
Since we are growing cucumbers-a Martha Stewart one-
Cucumber Ranch Dressing
Ingredients

Makes 2 1/4 cups

* 1 medium cucumber, peeled, halved lengthwise, seeded, and grated on the large holes of a box grater
* 1 tablespoon shallot, finely chopped
* 3/4 cup sour cream
* 1/4 cup low-fat buttermilk
* 1/4 cup mayonnaise
* 3 1/2 tablespoons (about 1 lemon) fresh lemon juice
* 1 1/4 teaspoons coarse salt
* Pinch of cayenne pepper
* 3 tablespoons fresh flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped
* 3 tablespoons fresh chives, finely chopped
Directions
1. Stir together cucumber, shallot, sour cream, buttermilk, mayonnaise, lemon juice, salt, cayenne, parsley, and chives in a medium bowl. Season with additional salt and cayenne, if desired. Dressing can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Serve with pita chips-yum!
4. It’s the middle of the night, there isnt a car in sight and you are stuck at a red light that just won’t change…. how long do you wait until you run it?
Within a few minutes.

5. When was the last time you got all dressed up fancy-like? Where did you go? For my son’s college graduation in May and then I wore a new dress to a little grad party we had last month for him.

6. Have you ever had a mole removed? Yes, it was right where necklaces would rub on it.

7. Are you in an area of record highs or record lows for the temps this summer? Are you lucky and stuck in the middle where it’s somewhat normal? We’ve had a fairly ‘cool’ summer. In this past week we’ve had high 80s and humidity. It’s really playing with my sinuses.

8. When was the last time you changed your furnace filter?
I just asked my husband as we run the a/c through it too. It’s been a few months. I asked before reading this too!

9. What’s your favorite type of frog?
The ones I see in my little pond-Leopards.

10. If you were to go on America’s Got Talent, what would you do for your talent? (and choosing not to go is not an option….)
Sing!

11. Have you ever been on a rooftop of a building? Yes! Down at Caesar’s in Atlantic City (where we are going again next week) they have a pool there.

12. What is the first website you go to each day when you sit down at your computer, other than your email?
Either my blog or Facebook.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My sinuses are being bothersome-the ones around my eyes-ugh. My throat is weird too. Even Claritin isn’t helping a lot. I have something else to try too.
I got a phone call yesterday from ‘Private caller’. At first I thought it was a charity, and then I picked it up and it was my friend from college who was also my maid of honor. We had lost touch because she wouldn’t write anything about what was going on in her life in Christmas cards, just wrote ‘Love, L’. I asked her to and she wouldn’t. Anyway, we talked for an hour. She got her Master’s at age 45 and still is working in the prison in NJ (I think she processes inmates). Said they are hiring people that haven’t had college training as they don’t want to pay for that. She’s hoping to retire in 7 yrs at age 55. Found her through her brother on Facebook! She’s not a computer person.
Sean is off to Bethany Beach, DE to spend a few days with his pal who will be going to Miami for his Masters in a week or so. We are going down to Atlantic City for a few days next week like we did last year. We are hoping to drive over to Cape May as we haven’t been there for 10 yrs! Last year we went to Margate and saw the Lucy the Elephant structure.
Here is my share for today. I found this little cabinet at a liquidator place. It’s great because it holds the Art trading cards I make and receive. The doors had a photo of some vintage man, so I replaced it with old family photos of Brian’s grandmom at the top, my maternal great grandmom and her daughters, my grandmom Ruth and her sister Ethel and finally of my maternal greats on the 4th of July and their children. I believe it only cost $6 as some of the finish isn’t done correctly (it’s sticky) and you can’t see it anyway.
Facebook breakdown
Standard
It really is hard to know what to write about sometimes, so here goes about something that’s on my mind. As you all know by now, I ♥ Facebook. I am up to about 196 ‘friends’, many who I know. I haven’t officially broken down how I know who, but about 92 (at least) went to high school with me! I graduated with about 486, about 10 are deceased, so that is close to one fifth of my class-and I graduated 32 years ago. Of those ’92’, I’ve seen about 8 of them in the last few months. Many still live in the area, but many don’t . It’s just fun to talk to people I once shared a classroom with who I’d never thought I’d talk to again. And I have to say what a varied class! Many love sailing-I found a common thread there. Many have been to so many exotic areas for vacation.
So who are the other 100 or so? I think the next breakdown is definitely cross stitch pals. Many I met through blogging, so they are blogging pals too. There are those who I know just from blogging and a group called Tribe. And then I have people I meant through the Flickr photography site.
I have four ‘celebs’-one I went to school with who is a director and Emmy winner-Todd*Robinson. Jennifer*Hutt has a radio and tv show with Alexis*Stewart called ‘What*ever’. Charlotte*Lyons is a crafter and writer and works with Mary*Engelbreit. Rory*Schepisi was a finalist on ‘The Next*Food Network* Star’ on the Food*Network.
So that’s why I love Facebook-so many connections, so many interesting people-all in one place!
1. Why the heck did you come back this week to do this meme?
Because it’s fun and I like to see how other bloggers answer the questions.
2. Ever whiten your teeth?
I tried the brush-on stuff at home, but it irritated my gums too much. Now that the toothpaste comes with some whitening agents, I just use that.
3. Do you drive the speed limit?
I try, but maybe sometimes I drive over it without realizing it.
4. Did the dog eat your homework?
Gee-don’t think so. Maybe walked on it with muddy paws?
5. How many bites does it take to get to the center of a watermelon?
Is that with or without the rind? Please slice mine.
6. Did you eat paint chips as a child?
Not that I was told. Hope not.
7. If someone rang your doorbell/knocked on your door at 1am, would you answer it?
Probably not unless they were persistent about it and I’d probably talk to them through the window.
8. “Amazingly Smooth” makes you think of what? I saw the word smooth and thought of a smoothie. It’s almost smoothie time!
9. What was the last stupid thing someone said to you? (not counting this meme’s questions)
LOL-hmmm…it was the hubs-I was doing an altered tin and asked where I got the tin which was clearly an Altoid’s tin-one is always on the computer desk. I guess I did such a good job on it he couldn’t tell what it was!
10. Would you eat a stick of butter for $100? That wouldn’t be a problem.
11. Find the nearest fabric tab, not counting your clothing you are wearing. What does it say the object is made of and where was it made?
It’s 100% polyester and made in Burma.
12. What is the strangest name you’ve ever heard someone name their child (or a person you met… however you want to answer it)?
First it was the Frank Zappa kids like Moon Unit and Dweezil. And then Bob Geldof was Fefe and Peaches. The latest one that is odd is Ashley Simpson’s son-Bronx Mogli. If she would drop the ‘x’ it would sound nicer with her married name.
13. Why is some toilet paper really soft and others are really hard? Quality baby!
My mom’s eye is better today.
1. Recently Berleen and I discovered the allure of the Twilight series. Have you ever been sucked in to the latest “thing”? (Like Harry Potter, the movie Titanic, social networking, etc. etc. etc.)
Most definitely. I mean if things are ‘that popular’ there has to be something interesting going on. I still have Titanic memorabilia around-it was the anniversary of the sinking at midnight yesterday.
I was a Facebook hold off for years until my childhood friend asked me to join. My son’s been on it since it’s inception. Now I wonder how I lived without it!
2. What software do you use for your email?
Outlook Express
3. Are you comfortable being nude?
All I can say is getting older isn’t easy.
4. What is something you plan on doing this summer?
My hubs promised me a trip to NYC for our 25th anniversary which was this past Tuesday-so maybe we’ll go there and a beach later on.
5. Do you have a favorite movie/book quote? If so, what is it?
I don’t know if this is from a movie/book-but my mom always says this-and this too, shall pass. I like Oprah’s-knowledge is power too.
6. How many email addresses do you have?
I think about 4, but rarely look at three of them.
7. Is the sky falling?
Am I Chicken Little? Stuff definitely falls from the sky-weird stuff sometimes.
8. Have you been to the Grand Canyon?
Not yet.
9. When was the last time you mailed a hand written letter?
It really hasn’t been that long. I swap art cards with people and always add a little handwritten note to the envelopes.
First day of sun for a few. I need to run some errands, like get groceries!
Bri still isn’t quite himself-maybe he needs more exercise, not sure what’s up with him-guys can get hormonal issues too! My friend’s dad had problems, got checked out and lost 20 pounds! I think he deep down knows that with his dad approaching 86, he’ll have to face lots of stuff sooner or later.
Thursday Thunks
Standard
I’m a few weeks behind here and I enjoy the thunks! By the way, Brian’s polyp biopsy was benign! Now he can work on his stress and sleep issues.
: )
1. What was the last thing you ate?
Besides the Altoids, I had a couple of chocolate chip Eggos for breakfast.
2. I say the color purple.. what do you think of?
Grapes or grape juice
3. Lamps or ceiling lights?
A little of each. I have mostly lamps, but I have a trac lighting in my kitchen that works well.
4. What color rabbit is your favorite?
I like the fluffy white ones. We had a white one with black spots who was named Buster.
5. Your car breaks down on a deserted road and your cell phone has no signal – what do you do?
I would have to wait for a policeman or someone who looks nice to come along and call for help for me.
6. What is one thing most of your friends do online that you just can’t understand the fascination and do not participate in?
One friend plays Club Penguin, never been there. I ‘played’ at the Webkinz site for a while, but outgrew it. : )
A husband who isn’t sleep deprived.
8. And your most serious injury you’ve had was….?
Fractured my nose in a car accident.
9. What is the most evil thing you’ve ever done?
The only thing that I can think of is ‘borrowing’ money from my son’s room. He’s smart and just has coins in there now. But we pay for his loans and car insurance and he doesn’t have a job while he’s in school…so….
10. Give us some random fact about you.
I can pretty much play the harmonica part in the Billy Joel song ‘The Piano Man’-I just heard that song on the radio.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Last week’s questions:
1. Did you play any April Fools jokes on anyone or have a joke played on you?
I do but didn’t this year as I had to take Bri to the ER in the wee hours of that day. I usually try the spider on you or something’s on your shirt jokes.
2. If you could be on any non-reality TV show as a guest star or star, which one would it be and why?
Grey’s Anatomy-because I like all the actors and their characters.
3. Do you crack your knuckles? Just did!
4. If you remember your first day of kindergarten, were you scared or excited? If you have kids or grandkids, were they scared or excited?
I remember it vaguely-mom walked me to school. The classroom was part of the cafeteria, so I had to walk down stairs and smell all those cafeteria smells-chicken noodle soup, milk, Lysol….
I think my son was excited as he got to ride the school bus.
5. If you are in the shower, hear the fire alarm going off and smell smoke/see flames, will you just run out of the house with a towel on or grab some clothes & dress as you run out? I would probably throw on my bathrobe that is usually in the bathroom with me.
6. Last week the Thursday Thunkers asked about your Daddy (twice), so this week tell us a little about your Mom.
Mom is probably my best female friend. We are a lot alike, but I don’t think I am as needy as her. We both have lots of stuff in our house, but she has taken it to the hoarding level, especially clothes. She and my grandmom did a good job at raising 4 kids on a small income.
7. Which search engine do you use most often?
Google!

It’s been a while…let me think.
10. If you do something embarrassing, do you laugh it off, or sit & worry about it?
Both-I try to laugh it off but wonder if the other person or people are still thinking about it.
11. Where is your favorite spot in your home to sit & relax?
The end of the sofa in front of the tv.

Want to play too?
Watch for the full pink moon tonight!

People who have been ill with say cancer and get better to make a difference in the world.

18. When do you think Bud will let us see the DVD of him and the french twins? Pass

Thursday Thunks

Standard

I forgot to play last week-may have to grab those questions too!

1. The last flight of stairs you walked up/down – were the carpeted? Uncarpeted-my basement stairs!

2. Green or purple grapes?
Doesn’t really matter-I think green skins aren’t as thick maybe?

3. Do you like Peeps?
I like they once in a while. There seems to be Peeps available year round-Santa Peeps, Heart Peeps, and maybe Shamrock Peeps?

4. The smell of Vicks – like it?
Yes-it reminds me of my childhood-but wait, I was usually sick when I was smeared with it! I still use a touch of it in the winter (on the bottom of my neck in front) to keep my head open. It usually works!

5. Do you put decorative cling-ons on your windows for different holidays? I use to when my son was little. They fall off a lot! I have a few fairy ones still on my bedroom windows which are cute, but faded.

6. Finish the sentence – I spent too much money on ________ .
art collage materials.
7. Which celebrity should be flown into outer space or placed on a desert island? Paris Hilton

8. Would you support schools changing the “open” time? Such as 10am – 5pm, for example? Not having a school age child, it really doesn’t matter. I think 5 pm is too late as half the year it’s dark by then.

9. Do you go fishing? No, not really interested. It would be neat to catch lobsters though.
10. What question should we ask next week? It’s springtime-do you spend more time outdoors?

Last week’s questions:
1. You are walking down the road and you look down. There is a bug. Do you step on it? The operative part of this question-walking down the road-no I wouldn’t step on it, just walk away from it quickly!
2. What is one fantasy that you want to come true more than any other? Living in a land of rainbows and unicorns-gee-I think having a living environment under the sea or in space would be cool.
3. Someone knocks on your door. Do you look out the window to see who it is before you open it? Do you open it regardless of who it is? If I was expecting someone, I open the door. If not, I look and most times speak out the window to the person.
4. Have you ever eaten Play Doh?
Many moons ago-very salty-probably spit it out!
5. What was your favorite Saturday morning cartoon as a child and why?
Bug Bunny and Looney Tunes-love Marc Anthony the Bulldog and his little friend Pussyfoot.
6. Are you a “people watcher”?
I think I am, especially if I’m playing ‘the waiting game’ waiting for someone who is in a store at the mall.
7. I have a bowl of fruit. There are apples, oranges & pears. You help yourself to one – which one do you choose?
I like all three, but I don’t eat a lot of pears, so I’d pick one if it wasn’t too hard-I’d pick the apple if this was so.

What to play?
too?

Collection of glass eggs, originally uploaded by DianthusMoon.

This is my collection of glass eggs, mostly bought by my husband who thought I collected them! I may have bought one. I think he is the one who likes them more than me, but these are perfect for Easter. I just found the ‘Snowbaby’ waterglobe at the Goodwill yesterday.
