Our Christmas Card 2010

Our Christmas Card 2010, originally uploaded by DianthusMoon.

This is what I came up with. I think it turned out cute. Now I have to get it printed up (I do about 20-25). That’s the three of us at various ages. If you noticed I do a Santa hat theme every year.
I did three cards to catch up over the last few days. I wanted to do one of my uncle as a tyke, but didn’t get around to printing out the photo. For some reason his baby photo reminds me of him the last time I saw him, ‘beady’ eyes and not much hair.
This is little me in my pom hat. It was November and I was outside in a playpen. I won’t go there-ok, my brother was a newborn and I guess this is how mom or my aunt got me out of their hair for a while.

Then I used some photos of Brian for this card. Printed the one of me above and the background here too big and I don’t dare waste anything!

Last but not least is Sean as a 2 yr old that was also used on the Christmas card. Love him sticking out his tongue. Seems so long ago.

Obit for my uncle

Standard

Written by me as requested my mom-submitted to Delco Times:

Donald A. Stroud, 87, of West Chester, PA passed away at Paoli Hospital, on December 7, 2010. Mr. Stroud was a 13 year survivor of prostate cancer. He was musical and artistic throughout his lifetime. He taught music and was the musical coordinator (at his retirement) at Ridley School District, Delaware County for 36 years. Through that time he influenced many musicians and gained lifelong friendships. When he retired he enjoyed woodworking and carved many intricate and realistic birds. He enjoyed fishing and his self constructed cabin in Delaware. His home was important to him and his yard was always immaculate.

Mr. Stroud is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mildred, two daughters Carol Samuelson and Marjorie Lourdes; a daughter who predeceased him 1-8-10, Dorothy Rogers; 5 grandchildren, great grandchildren, his sister Jeanne S. Knowles and her 4 children along with other family and friends. A loving and special thanks to Dr. Nat Shmuckler and his wife Joanne for all they did for Don over the last few years. Interment and a service are pending.

Changed to RIP Uncle Don

Standard

I got ‘the phone call’ from my Uncle Don’s stepdaughter that he was taken to the hospital last night and found to have pneumonia. He is very sick and non-responsive. My step-cousin was by his side all night, but none of us have been to the hospital for various reasons. My mom doesn’t want to see him die before her eyes, and I have to agree with her. The last time we saw him, he was a bit out of it and that was in the other hospital. The hours are just going by soooooo….slowly. I jump a foot when the phone rings.

My Uncle is my mom’s older brother by 7 years and only sibling. He was born when his parents were 22 and 20 yrs old. He’s lived through the Great Depression and many wars. He didn’t serve in WWII as he was found to have nodules from a childhood bout of TB. He went to West Chester College and graduated to be the music instructor for Ridley School District for 36 years. He knew how to play a variety of instruments. He loved his mom a lot and would visit her a few days a week on his way home from Ridley as Media  was close by. He liked to do woodworking and I think most of us have something he made either by hand or machine. I have a few of his carved birds which were really nicely done. He retirement in 1981 to travel, etc. He had a motor home that he drove to places like Michigan where he and his wife met a couple who they remained friendly with for many years. Speaking of my aunt, she is still with us but in a nursing home. She’ll be 95 on the 18th! He kept his yard like a park and took great pride in doing so. We had have helped him in recent years, but it proved too hard a job and he was having it cleaned up lately. He is a 13 yr survivor of prostate cancer, but it left him with a useless bladder (from the radiation). He enjoyed watching tv 24/7, but in later years it was tuned on CNN all the time. He also did Cryptograms, if I’m not mistaken and enjoyed his pipe and sweet tooth. In general he is a good man and had lots of pals.

My only maternal uncle passed away around 6:30 pm est. RIP with another lovely person who left this world an hour or soon earlier, Elizabeth Edwards.

Collage card #100!

Standard

Well this is actually yesterday’s card, but I did it tonight (Sunday). I’ve been busy! And this is the second try. I had a Santa sticker that I traced around with black-off that came and I covered it with the same paper. The middle is from a box of yummy peppermint sticks. The bottom is a row of snowflakes with little clear beads.
Then for today, I did this one:
Dream in green and aqua 4" x 4" Collage Card
I got a sheet of these beautiful porches and doors and my mom gave me a little book of lovely papers. I like how it all came together. I hope you are noticing that I use little bits here and there. Like on the back of the butterfly-that’s a piece of the tag I saved from a week or so ago (the owl one).
The tree is up! It’s only lit and beaded. I better be careful what I add because there’s a lot going on with the lights as I am using LED candle lights with clear lights. Sean gave me the new star.
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas
Mr. Cosmo is enjoying the space in front of the tree as the curio table is in front of the fireplace.

Since I moved the tree next to the bay window, the window will not be over dressed-maybe a few snowbabies as the tree is quite brilliant. This is a good excuse for me to tidy more. I am learning my lesson. ; ) Please ignore the cords and a few things under there. Cos looked so cute, I had to take his photo.

Christmas inspired Collages & Photo Hunt-Hard to find

Noel 4" x 4" Collage Card, originally uploaded by DianthusMoon.

I’m trying to catch up with cards a bit. I think I will do lots of holiday ones now. This was originally a circle gift tag and I added the old music paper and swirl.
This next one is a scan of an angel from one of my vintage children books from the turn of the last century. I colored it in a bit with pastels and added gorgeous stickers-the snow globe is a sticker too!

The photo hunt was ‘hard to find’ and I thought of my old photos and books. I loved this book when I was a little girl and was lucky enough to find a copy of it at a book sale a few years back:
My favorite Christmas book as a child-Mr. Willowby's Christmas Tree
The story goes that Mr Willowby’s tree is too big, so he cuts off the top and then the top gets cut down smaller and smaller by various people and critters-down to a little mouse.

Comes and goes

I get excited about Christmas and then something happens. Today Sean and I were going to take the van about 5 miles down the road to a produce place I found. He started to back up and had to put his foot all the down on the pedal! Now how lucky was it that we were still in the driveway? After we went out, I said I’d treat him to lunch. Our feathers were a bit ruffled as it was and we needed a nice meal. We went to this place we frequent once a month and went up to the counter. The guy was making some kind of beverage, like a smoothie and he let us stand there without making eye contact or saying a word. We decided to spend our money on lunch elsewhere and found a nice cafe with very nice women. It was like night and day.

This afternoon, I was putting away the autumn decor and that took a while. I tried to dress the mantel with one kind of garland, and it didn’t work. I have some pink tinsel up now, but I think I am going to go for an evergreen with something wrapped around it. I found a pretty faux poinsettia topiary, but the pot is cracked and it’s kind of big. I did have fun putting out the Blushing Bunnies and Cherished Teddies-so cute.

My Christmas card will hopefully be assembled and printed by Tuesday. I need to borrow Sean’s car to go to my hometown for a hair appointment on Monday. Someone will have to pick him up at 10:30 at night.

My mom seems to have her financial situation moving along and things will be better when my brother starts his new job and they both get on their feet.

I was happy that I could get my monthly oil payments reduced and also get the service added on  in case we need it.

Cancel lots of email subscriptions that were clogging my inbox like crazy. Is it necessary to send 1-2 emails a day?

Almost finished one of the best books I’ve read in a long time called ‘The Forgotten Garden’ by Kate Morton. I like endings that surprise me! Sometimes I wonder if the author’s ever write the endings first? : )

We may put up the tree tomorrow if I more more stuff out of the way. : )

Merry Christmas Giveaway!

I have this adorable hardback book by artist Nancy Noel and want to share it with my readers-all three of you! Only kidding. I love Nancy’s sweet children and have had her Amish girl with a lamb up in my living room for years. You can also frame the various pages if you want to take the book apart
All you have to do is leave a comment here and I will pick a winner around the 15th of December. I will also create a special Christmas collage and frame it too! That isn’t made yet, but I will make it cute!
Good luck!

In the dark for a while

Standard

This neck of the woods had very gusty rain mostly in the morning on Wednesday. I was laying in bed around 8:45 am and heard an arching noise and then the power went out. Seems there was ‘tree interference’ somewhere. We waited and waited until it finally came back on at 12:30. It was too dark to do anything constructive, so I sat and crocheted.
Later I wrote a note to my father-in-law explaining about how people get scammed and what could have been going on. I hope reading something makes him not do that again.
I found the elements for this card the night before and it came together nicely. How many times have we pulled flower petals off flowers and said the same thing? I took the photo a few years back and added the verse.
