1. What color is your front door?
It use to be red, but we painted it a teal color which I love.
Front door at Christmas
2. We discussed our folks in previous TT so now tell me about your siblings. If you are an only child, tell me whether or not you wanted siblings, older, younger etc.
I have three brothers, one 5 yrs older, one a year younger and one 7 years younger. My middle brother and I were like twins until we hit about 13. I think being in a family with divorced parents and no dad around was really hard for them, but they turned out well, all have good jobs and many interests. Also I’m an auntie because of two of them-3 nephews and one niece!
3. What color/type butterfly is your favorite?
I really love the Monarch. Had one that hatched late in the season stay on my hand one time-even brought it in the house for a few minutes. He finally got his wings flapping and off he went!
baby monarch
4. Will you be celebrating Cinco De Mayo? We have many Hispanics in this area, so they do the celebrating just fine.
5. Oprah- love her, hate her, or don’t care?
I really admire her for her success! She’s had a fabulous career, built a school, a mansion and a half (or two) for herself. No, never would hate her!
6. Are you worried about the spread of swine flu?
I’m concerned. I just hope none of the locals just came back from the homeland, especially near where it all started. I wash my hands a lot and use lots of hand sanitizer.
7. Hard or soft pillows?
More hard-need support, but not rock hard support.
8. How many trees are in your neighbor’s yard? A lot-especially the humongous ones on a bank that could fall over and take out the electrical lines and maybe hit our house!
9. What was the color of the last car you saw? Black as I noticed the driver as someone I knew.
10. When does your driver’s license expire? I think it’s good for another year or two.
11. Look at the clock on your computer and type the numbers backwards.72:11
12. When you put your pants on, what leg do you put in first? Probably my left as I am left-handed.
13. How would you respond to this letter if you were an advice columnist.
I am an ugly woman. I was an ugly baby and child even! It is a fact. I am 36 now and I have never had a boyfriend, and I am still a virgin.

Due to me not having men in my life, I have poured everything I have in to education and my career. At 36 I am the youngest (and first female CEO) at a big, successful, tech company. I have over 200 personal patents and millions of pounds in investments.

I have everything: huge house, holiday villa in Spain, 3 cars, power boat, a race horse, etc. but as much I try to talk myself into everything being “great” I cannot help but to miss that special someone to share it all with.

Most of my friends are married with kids and I feel like I am gradually drifting away from them also.

Where can I find someone to marry an ugly woman?
You could go the route and say beauty is skin deep and that there is always someone out there for you. Or you could suggest plastic surgery to improve what she thinks is ugly. Or since she seems to be lonesome, maybe she can hire a male companion to be her secretary or something like that.

New Year card 1939, originally uploaded by DianthusMoon.

My one brother is sorting through stuff-mainly photos- in our mom’s house and decided to make scrapbooks of what he is finding. I borrowed a finished one he made for mom and this on of the many quaint things in it. It’s a 70+ year old New Year’s card from my grandfather Alan to my grandmom Ruth. I thought it was so cute. My ‘Pop-pop’ was good at card giving as I’ve seen a few now and then. Wish I had know him-he passed away when I was only two months old.

The temps are climbing here-going to the upper 80s over the weekend! That’s too warm for April! I woke up with a sore throat, just on one side, so I hope I’m not getting a cold. The allergens are in the air too, especially with this spike in temps!

Benefits of Walking and Thursday Thunks

Standard

My uncle sent me this in email and I thought it was good enough to share. Thanks Uncle Larry!
The Importance of Walking
Walking can add minutes to your life.
This enables you at 85 years old to spend an additional 5 months in a nursing home at $7000 per month.

My grandpa started walking five miles a day when he was 60.
Now he’s 97 years old and we don’t know where he is.

I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.
The only reason I would take up walking is so that I could hear heavy breathing again..

I have to walk early in the morning, before my brain figures out what I’m doing..

I joined a health club last year, spent about 400 bucks.
Haven’t lost a pound. Apparently you have to go there.

Every time I hear the dirty word ‘exercise’, I wash my mouth out with chocolate.

I do have flabby thighs, but fortunately my stomach covers them.

The advantage of exercising every day is so when you die, they’ll say,
‘Well, she looks good doesn’t she.’

If you are going to try cross-country skiing, start with a small country.

I know I got a lot of exercise the last few years …… just getting over the hill.
We all get heavier as we get older, because there’s a lot more information in our heads.
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

AND

Every time I start thinking too much about how I look, I just find a Happy Hour and by the time I leave, I look just fine.

Thursday Thunks

1. If you could skywrite anything you wanted, what would it be? ‘Love one another’

2. Did you get drunk at your prom?
Didn’t go to mine. I’ve had other times I had issues, only a couple-I was a good girl.

3. What is your favorite spice to use cooking?
I really like chili powder, but I like oregano, basil, and dill a bunch too.

4. What color is your roof? It’s fairly new and I picked out different tones of brown. I had a neighbor ask where we got it and a neighbor a few doors down copied it on their house.

5. In a land far, far away I grew a garden full of magical plants and flowers, ate chocolate all day and had a gorgeous figure that never went south.

6. In the Miss USA pageant, Miss California was asked; “Vermont recently became the fourth state to legalize same sex marriage. Do you think every state should follow suit? Why or why not?” and her answer was; “Well I think it’s great that Americans are able to choose one or the other. Um, we live in a land that you can choose same sex marriage or opposite marriage and, you know what, in my country and in, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman,” Carrie said to a mix of boos and applause. “No offense to anybody out there. But that’s how I was raised and that’s how I think that it should be between a man and a woman.” Do you think that cost her the crown?
No-she said she understood America had the right to chose and she was expressing her opinion. I think people made a mountain out of a molehill. Time to concentrate on the real winner. And I don’t even like beauty pageants that much as they give young girls the wrong impression about what beauty really is.

7. Do you watch Miss USA/Miss America pageants? Not usually. I did more when I was younger as there wasn’t much to watch, plus Miss America was in Atlantic City, near where I lived.

8. Have you ever driven/ridden on a tractor? Not that I recall.

9. For the parents – what cartoon/children show did your child watch obsessively? (Hey, if you aren’t a parent, maybe a niece or nephew…) Chip and Dale, Rescue Rangers.

10. If I set a level on your living room floor – would it show that it was level?
I think so.

11. What was the last restaurant you ate at? Easy-took my mom out to eat Tuesday at a place up the road-Generations.

12. What’s the picture on your wall calendar for this month? A watercolor of a bunny surrounded by purple pansies-it’s the Old Farmer’s Almanac calendar

13. Are you superstitious? I have to actually step on a crack or see the #13 more than once-like right now-this is the #13-yikes!

14. If I get into your car and turn on the radio – what type of radio station will I hear? Contemporary pop and rock

15. Would you rather wake up with a snake in your bed or a lizard? I can think of a joke-won’t go there-I hate snakes, so I’ll take a lizard-they don’t bite, do they?

16. Do you think schools have changed at all since the Columbine tragedy 10 years ago? In what ways?
I hope so. I think they all should have metal detectors and maybe make the kids wear I.D. like the teachers and staff do.

1. Recently Berleen and I discovered the allure of the Twilight series. Have you ever been sucked in to the latest “thing”? (Like Harry Potter, the movie Titanic, social networking, etc. etc. etc.)
Most definitely. I mean if things are ‘that popular’ there has to be something interesting going on. I still have Titanic memorabilia around-it was the anniversary of the sinking at midnight yesterday.
I was a Facebook hold off for years until my childhood friend asked me to join. My son’s been on it since it’s inception. Now I wonder how I lived without it!
2. What software do you use for your email?
Outlook Express
3. Are you comfortable being nude?
All I can say is getting older isn’t easy.
4. What is something you plan on doing this summer?
My hubs promised me a trip to NYC for our 25th anniversary which was this past Tuesday-so maybe we’ll go there and a beach later on.
5. Do you have a favorite movie/book quote? If so, what is it?
I don’t know if this is from a movie/book-but my mom always says this-and this too, shall pass. I like Oprah’s-knowledge is power too.

I think about 4, but rarely look at three of them.

Am I Chicken Little? Stuff definitely falls from the sky-weird stuff sometimes.
8. Have you been to the Grand Canyon?
Not yet.
9. When was the last time you mailed a hand written letter?
It really hasn’t been that long. I swap art cards with people and always add a little handwritten note to the envelopes.

First day of sun for a few. I need to run some errands, like get groceries!
Bri still isn’t quite himself-maybe he needs more exercise, not sure what’s up with him-guys can get hormonal issues too! My friend’s dad had problems, got checked out and lost 20 pounds! I think he deep down knows that with his dad approaching 86, he’ll have to face lots of stuff sooner or later.

Show & Tell

Standard

I’ve been a fan of James Taylor for over 35 years. I saw that he was going to appear on The Oprah Winfrey Show today, so I took out my camera and snapped some photos of my favorite singer. I have other shots in my flickr set, many turned out well. I’ve seen him 4 times in concert, so I think this is worthy of a Show & Tell. I got ‘this close’ to meeting his daughter Sally, but she had to leave right when I got near her (she’s a singer/songwriter/guitar player too.)
Yes, I do have all the records except the very latest one-the second ‘Covers’.

Thursday Thunks

I’m a few weeks behind here and I enjoy the thunks! By the way, Brian’s polyp biopsy was benign! Now he can work on his stress and sleep issues.
: )
1. What was the last thing you ate?
Besides the Altoids, I had a couple of chocolate chip Eggos for breakfast.
2. I say the color purple.. what do you think of?
Grapes or grape juice
3. Lamps or ceiling lights?
A little of each. I have mostly lamps, but I have a trac lighting in my kitchen that works well.
4. What color rabbit is your favorite?
I like the fluffy white ones. We had a white one with black spots who was named Buster.
5. Your car breaks down on a deserted road and your cell phone has no signal – what do you do?
I would have to wait for a policeman or someone who looks nice to come along and call for help for me.
6. What is one thing most of your friends do online that you just can’t understand the fascination and do not participate in?
One friend plays Club Penguin, never been there. I ‘played’ at the Webkinz site for a while, but outgrew it. : )
7. What do you need right now?
A husband who isn’t sleep deprived.
8. And your most serious injury you’ve had was….?
Fractured my nose in a car accident.
9. What is the most evil thing you’ve ever done?
The only thing that I can think of is ‘borrowing’ money from my son’s room. He’s smart and just has coins in there now. But we pay for his loans and car insurance and he doesn’t have a job while he’s in school…so….
10. Give us some random fact about you.
I can pretty much play the harmonica part in the Billy Joel song ‘The Piano Man’-I just heard that song on the radio.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Last week’s questions:
1. Did you play any April Fools jokes on anyone or have a joke played on you?
I do but didn’t this year as I had to take Bri to the ER in the wee hours of that day. I usually try the spider on you or something’s on your shirt jokes.
2. If you could be on any non-reality TV show as a guest star or star, which one would it be and why?
Grey’s Anatomy-because I like all the actors and their characters.
3. Do you crack your knuckles? Just did!
4. If you remember your first day of kindergarten, were you scared or excited? If you have kids or grandkids, were they scared or excited?
I remember it vaguely-mom walked me to school. The classroom was part of the cafeteria, so I had to walk down stairs and smell all those cafeteria smells-chicken noodle soup, milk, Lysol….
I think my son was excited as he got to ride the school bus.
5. If you are in the shower, hear the fire alarm going off and smell smoke/see flames, will you just run out of the house with a towel on or grab some clothes & dress as you run out? I would probably throw on my bathrobe that is usually in the bathroom with me.
6. Last week the Thursday Thunkers asked about your Daddy (twice), so this week tell us a little about your Mom.
Mom is probably my best female friend. We are a lot alike, but I don’t think I am as needy as her. We both have lots of stuff in our house, but she has taken it to the hoarding level, especially clothes. She and my grandmom did a good job at raising 4 kids on a small income.
7. Which search engine do you use most often?
Google!
8. Did you participate in Earth Hour?
No because where I live is mostly surrounded by brush and no one would notice. Plus one of the only lightbulbs that was on was the special ones.
It’s been a while…let me think.
The end of the sofa in front of the tv.
Want to play too?
Watch for the full pink moon tonight!
18. When do you think Bud will let us see the DVD of him and the french twins? Pass
I forgot to play last week-may have to grab those questions too!
I like they once in a while. There seems to be Peeps available year round-Santa Peeps, Heart Peeps, and maybe Shamrock Peeps?
4. The smell of Vicks – like it?
Yes-it reminds me of my childhood-but wait, I was usually sick when I was smeared with it! I still use a touch of it in the winter (on the bottom of my neck in front) to keep my head open. It usually works!
5. Do you put decorative cling-ons on your windows for different holidays? I use to when my son was little. They fall off a lot! I have a few fairy ones still on my bedroom windows which are cute, but faded.
art collage materials.
7. Which celebrity should be flown into outer space or placed on a desert island? Paris Hilton
8. Would you support schools changing the “open” time? Such as 10am – 5pm, for example? Not having a school age child, it really doesn’t matter. I think 5 pm is too late as half the year it’s dark by then.
9. Do you go fishing? No, not really interested. It would be neat to catch lobsters though.
10. What question should we ask next week? It’s springtime-do you spend more time outdoors?
Last week’s questions:
1. You are walking down the road and you look down. There is a bug. Do you step on it? The operative part of this question-walking down the road-no I wouldn’t step on it, just walk away from it quickly!
2. What is one fantasy that you want to come true more than any other? Living in a land of rainbows and unicorns-gee-I think having a living environment under the sea or in space would be cool.
3. Someone knocks on your door. Do you look out the window to see who it is before you open it? Do you open it regardless of who it is? If I was expecting someone, I open the door. If not, I look and most times speak out the window to the person.
4. Have you ever eaten Play Doh?
Many moons ago-very salty-probably spit it out!
5. What was your favorite Saturday morning cartoon as a child and why?
I think I am, especially if I’m playing ‘the waiting game’ waiting for someone who is in a store at the mall.
7. I have a bowl of fruit. There are apples, oranges & pears. You help yourself to one – which one do you choose?
1. This cat- Link– scary or cute? I do like cats and would have to see this guy in person. He’s a bit scary looking though.
Don’t really care. I do think Suri is a cutie, though I don’t care for her name.
3. Do you smile at strangers when you make eye contact? Usually.
4. What percentage of your sarcasm isn’t really sarcasm at all? I try not to be sarcastic-a poor personality quality. If someone has done something opposite of what I suggested I may be sarcastic because I feel like my opinion wasn’t valued enough to be considered. Don’t ask my husband if I was sarcastic about his car please. ; )
5. If you were to be a dog breed, which breed would you be?
Definitely a Sheltie
As I said last night, no car again. The tow truck came to get Bri’s car and it started up. It then started at the station. It must be an electrical problem. I woke up feeling funky about 6 am. I was hungry but felt worse as I was in a sweat. I think it’s my age for sure. Lucky me! My upper back is still sore too. My mom was saying how a sledding accident from when she was a girl showed up in a back x-ray when she was a senior citizen. Well I was in a car accident back in 1981 where my face got smashed again the windshield in a VW bug, and may be having issues. I guess I should get an x-ray sooner or later. I don’t like to talk about my health issues, but if I am MIA ever you will know what the problem is. I don’t want to be MIA, but sometimes I wonder.
Shirley Temple at Play-1935, originally uploaded by DianthusMoon.
I love old books-especially for children. They have to have detailed or colorful illustrations for me to want to add them to the front ‘seat’ of my old child’s desk in my living room. I think I found this book on eBay and it’s just too darn cute. It’s in great shape for being 74 years old.
My mom was born in 1930, so is only a few years younger than Shirley Temple. My grandmom tried to give my mom’s stick straight hair Shirley ringlets to no avail.
