Photo Hunt-Entertainment

Standard

Besides my favorite singer James Taylor entertaining me 4 times over the last 30 yrs, I find it entertaining to take photos off our fairly new HD-tv. I then make collages, etc. if I have enough like I had here. My next tv photo session may be to look at old videos and freeze frame them to take photos. I had tried that on the old tv-like looked awful.

Happy Lammas Day! It’s the first day of harvest! It was traditional to bake a loaf of bread and have it consecrated at church, thus ‘loaf mass’-Lammas! Thanks Farmer’s Almanac!

Show & Tell

Standard

I’ve been a fan of James Taylor for over 35 years. I saw that he was going to appear on The Oprah Winfrey Show today, so I took out my camera and snapped some photos of my favorite singer. I have other shots in my flickr set, many turned out well. I’ve seen him 4 times in concert, so I think this is worthy of a Show & Tell. I got ‘this close’ to meeting his daughter Sally, but she had to leave right when I got near her (she’s a singer/songwriter/guitar player too.)
Yes, I do have all the records except the very latest one-the second ‘Covers’.

I get an email from JT every month and there were a few videos (and here too) attached of him making a mouse trap, playing with a mouse he caught (he named it Evander because it had a hole in it’s ear like the boxer) and then they showed him with his cat Ray! Wow, I didn’t know! Another short video was of Ray climbing up a cat walk to the second floor. These are cute as they show JT as like the grandfatherly type next door (he is a grandfather) and not the singing legend-except for what looks like a BMW in the garage. : )

I Recommend-#6

Standard

Welcome to the sixth edition of ‘I recommend’. As the name implies, this is a share to recommend just about anything you like or have tried. It can be a book, drink, food, movie, music CD-anything. Mister Linky will open to another page (that’s how it works on WordPress). Please add your link there and don’t forget to leave me a comment here.

Bloggers-this is a meme kind of post to help you think of things to add to your blog. So if you comment here, don’t forget to post about your favorite Christmas music (or whatever) on your blog. It doesn’t have to involve an entire blog post, just a small part of it. Thanks. : )

Short and sweet-what are your favorite Christmas CDs? I think the yearly offerings from Hallmark are pretty good. James Taylor did one a few years back and it’s excellent.

Michael McDonald was the next year or so-love his soulful voice. I’d like to get Sheryl Crowe’s Hallmark CD-new this year.

Love Sarah McLachlan’s too:

Other favs- Nat King Cole, The Carpenters, Jewel, Mariah Carey and Josh Groban.

My favorite radio station starts playing Christmas music 24/7 before Thanksgiving now. Although I enjoy hearing some favorites, I want to pull my hair out by the 18th of December I’m so sick of the music.

I do enjoy Handel’s Messiah. When I went to community college, I signed up briefly for the choir there and we were going to perform it. Not an easy piece of music to learn, especially for sopranos. I ended up leaving the choir, but later was in our church choir for a number of years. I told Bri I may join again next year.

It’s a matter of fact

That our next president will be left-handed and be the 8th president to be a lefty (yeah for lefties)

Watched the town hall debate-McCain scribbled out a lot of smudged left handed notes while Obama didn’t-he drank a lot of water. Wonder what McCain was trying to remember? Not crazy about people who say ‘my friends’. What happened to ‘my fellow Americans’-is that not in fashion now? And McCain kinda sounded like he was selling snake oil.

Noticed more people wanted to pose for photos with Obama than McCain at the end.

Brian wondered what was wrong with Obama’s hair. I think he is getting gray patches and it looks like bald spots.

Obama reminds me of Kerry when he speaks, maybe not in a good way-that deliberate way about his voice. It is better than McCain’s-he sounds like a nice grandpa.

It sounded like the same arguments from the 1st debate, but they got to walk around and stare at the people in the audience.

Oh…later…James Taylor was on the Tonight Show and I took a photo off the new tv.  Pretty clear!

Mom update, etc.

Standard

My older brother came and took Mom to her follow up visit. The eye doctor said it was healing slowly and she couldn’t even read the big ‘E’ on the chart yet. I had called her before she left and she was sweeping down the steps! OMG-with an eye so susceptible! What was she thinking? Thank goodness she is loading the eye up with 4-5 different drops. She said she had a monster headache all evening. The doctor said that was probably from the anesthesia. He also said she was probably ‘feeling’ it as the anesthesia was wearing off too soon. Mom said she didn’t sleep well, was thinking about all the mess in her house. I told her to worry about her eyes. My mom mom always said the dust will be around in 100 yrs and you won’t.  Wise woman. Mom gets rechecked on Tuesday-keep thinking about her please. : )

I forgot to mention that we got a new t.v. on Wednesday night. We went with Courtney’s suggestion, and got a 26″ Samsung LCD-HDtv. We need to get the high def hooked up. It has a really great picture, she was correct. I am still getting use to the rectangular format over the square. I’d like it maybe 2″ higher too.  I am so old-fashioned! We’re getting our Dishnet updated on Monday to HD-made those arrangements late in the afternoon. Won’t cost anything and we can sell back the old receivers too. I was talking with the young lady and she had cataract surgery as she got a hockey punk to the eye, sort of a coincidence.

It’s rainy here again. It couldn’t rain when we wanted tomatoes and peppers. And there was again another Philly police officer, a woman, who got killed by a 16 yr driver who went out of control in an SUV (I believe). Our local stations have been televising the funerals-so sad.

This evening-

Saw James Taylor selling his new CD ‘Covers’ on QVC tonight. You know, I wonder if I could have been in the stinkin’ audience? Ahhh! The QVC studio is about 25 minutes from here. I guess I’ll have to see if they have a calendar. James seems to have a deal with QVC as he’s been on before hawking CDs. He’s sure not comfortable doing PR and must have taken 8 sips from his water bottle in 1/2 hour.

I’m working on one of those canvases I bought to alter and so far it’s not proving easy. My main image was the front of a catalog and she is wrinkling-a lot. My friends swear by gel medium and I use tacky glue or Mod Podge. I’ve been sticking little holes in it to get the air out. I will just have to layer more. I painted it with Gesso first, that got a little crackled. Then I added red and gold acrylics. I can see ‘something’. My 3 pieces of large art that I found (two from a Christie’s auction catalog) are pretty. I’ll definitely share one way or another.

How sweet it is

…to be 60 years old! Congrats James Taylor, my favorite singer. I was around on the internet when JT turned 50 and emailed the webmaster of his unofficial site some old photos I had. One or two got used in a card that was made for James! This year, I made my own. I use both Paint Shop Pro 7 and Adobe-switch back and forth. The photo of him playing a banjo was on his sister Kate’s website. (the bigger version is in flickr).

JT 60th

I bought my 1st JT lp when I was about 13 when my mom let my brother and me pick out what we wanted in JC Penneys. I believe it was ‘Sweet Baby James’ and Don picked out either Carol King or Joni Mitchell. I’ve been a fan ever since. I’ve seen him 4 times over the years. I know people who have seen him dozens of times. Garth Brooks named his daughter Taylor after him and Melina Kanakaredes is a fan too. I admire his kids and his family too. What’s my favorite JT song-I really love the sound of ‘Only A Dream in Rio’. I like ‘Line ’em up’ and ‘October Road’ too. And the oldies. What can I say?

JT special achievements:

Kenny Loggins just turned 60 too!

Just to let you know, I paid for my flickr account for a year and if I find neat photos like JT or anything or anyone else, I can post them directly to my blog. Flickr is really a fun place to go and you can join tons of groups that follow your interests. You can have a free Flickr account, but with all the photos I take, I need to be able to have unlimited storage someplace.

So I’ve been told (and I know-lol) that I am curvy. But you ain’t seeing me in a bathing suit. ; )
So instead, here is a knot garden at Longwood Gardens:

By the way, I added some of the pictures I’ve been editing in paint shop pro over in my Flickr account if you’d like to take a look. There are over 2k photos there now (I’ve been adding to it for at least 8 years or more). It’s not a free account, but I don’t have to pay up for another few weeks. You can upload any size photo you want, join groups, have contacts, etc.! It’s fun to see art trading cards that others do as they inspire me.
Hope you are having a nice Saturday. Bri and I both seem to have tummy issues, but I think I narrowed mine down to eating these cheddar ‘whale’ snacks that are very orange, but oh so good. They are a rip off of the Pepperidge Farm fish. I ate some at bedtime and had heartburn around 3 am. I’ve been cutting back on peppermint products too. I still think Sean has something to do with how we feel. You’ll see what I mean soon.
My mom is at a fair that she has gone to with I’ve been a kid. A bum tranmission (her car is on it’s last legs) didn’t deter her from attending today. It’s in a ritzy area, so they usually have great knick knacks and clothes. I have gone in the past, but it’s over an hour to get there and you know the early bird gets the worm and I am not an early bird by any means. Tomorrow is a big flea market at the Delco campus of Penn State where Sean use to attend. We’re going to try to go there at least and before noon. ; )

The Phillies are having a hard time with the Colorado Rockies, meaning they have lost 2 out of 2 games so far. They are in Colorado now. I learned not to get my hopes up when it comes to our teams winning the big games. I guess that’s why we were over the moon when the Phils won the World Series in 1980. As the late Tug McGraw use to say, ‘You’ve gotta believe’.

It was a sad past week-the anniversary of the Nickel Mines shooting in Amish country was a year ago. Two guards in Abington (part of Philly) were assassinated as they added money to an ATM machine (I believe this is what happened). The killer didn’t just ask them to surrender the money, he shot them in cold blood. Both had been police officers for many years. And my friend Lisa lost her young dad, only 54, last Oct. 6th. God bless her.

College boy update-
He is doing well; got some good grades this past week. He is still struggling with Statistics and needs to pull that grade up. He got an ‘A’ on a paper I proof read about surveillance and a ‘B’ on one about two South American countries and their weather. He would have gotten an ‘A’ on that one also, but he forgot a map of the countries.
He is learning the hard way when it comes to parties. Let’s just say he isn’t going to drink ‘punch’ anymore, just beverages that are in cans. It seems after he was sick last weekend, my tummy acted up-see!!-it is Sean!
And congrats to singer Sally Taylor and her husband Dean on the arrival of their son born on the 4th of Oct. No name was given, but he’s a cutie and makes James a grandfather for the first time. If that boy doesn’t have curly hair, I’ll be surprised! I didn’t know her husband’s hair was so curly and Sal has a head of curls herself. Neat, I got credit for telling celebrity baby blog about the little guy’s arrival. I just love the Taylors!
