Magnification

Standard

Today I pulled floss to start a quick stitch-an adorable Christmas fairy in a book I got a few days ago. It had been on my Amazon wish list a few years. I think it pleased Bri not to have to run around too much this year. The book was less than $4. Anyway…I was looking for that fluffy flossy stuff for the fur part of the fairy’s outfit and ran across this big magnifier that you wear around your neck. I use to ‘poo poo’ it, but tonight-well it was pure magic. I stitched quite a bit of her head and the stitches were so tiny and neat.
magdevSo I recommend-using some sort of magnification device to save your eyes and make some pretty stitches.
I had a hard time getting to sleep Friday night. I think it was the couple of wine spritzers I drank-I don’t touch sugary stuff to drink in the evenings. I had good intentions to stitch the day away, but I just vegetated.
Sean was nice enough to bring us some yummy Five Guys burgers and then went out with his old HS pals. We’re kind of waiting on him now. ; )

And I ran across this site on Flickr-someone else was playing with their photos. Here’s what I made:

It’s really almost Christmas now

Standard

Yesterday I felt a bit frantic as every cookie recipe I looked at called for something I needed to purchase. Bri and I went on an early evening shopping trip to an almost empty store. They didn’t have unshelled pistachios for a cookie I want to try (recipe from Jennifer) and a few other things. Today I made ‘candy’ (I say that loosely)- Chocolate Cherry Bourbon Balls that my pal Warren said I should try. Brian went for a booze hunt in the basement and came up with a gorgeous bottle of Taylor Kentucky Bourbon. It had a ’68’ on the bottle, and sure enough it was from 1968! Bri did a Google search and found the exact bottle. The little balls are very potent! I don’t know how many anyone will be able to eat without feeling tipsy-lol.

A condensed ‘I recommend’-
What made my day was finding a recipe for Peanut Butter Pinwheels which has to be the exact recipe from one of Peg Bracken’s ‘I hate to cook’ books. I made them as a teen and loved making them, smelling them baking and eating them! I made some and the following are photos of the rolled up peanut butter dough with the melted chocolate inside, to the finished product. I may bake a batch of easy peasy 7 layer cookies when I finish here-all in one pan-and finish up the rest tomorrow.

    Making Peanut Butter Pinwheels

Recipe for
Peanut Butter Pinwheels-
Taste of Home-Best & Loved Cookies and Bars (there is a new edition every year it seems-I only have last year’s issue which I recommend)
Sent in by Kandy Dick
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg
2 Tablespoons milk
1 1/4 cups All-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup (6 oz) semisweet chocolate chips
In a mixing bowl, cream shortening, peanut butter and sugar. Beat in egg, and milk. Combine the flour, baking soda and salt; add to the creamed mixture.
Roll out dough between wax paper into a 12″ x 10″ rectangle (I think it could be a wee bit bigger). Melt chocolate chips; cool slightly. Spread over dough to within 1/2 inch of the edges. Roll up tightly, jelly roll style, starting with long side; wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 20-30 minutes or until easy to handle.

Unwrap dough and cut into 1/2 inch slices. Place 1 inch apart on greased baking sheets. Bake at 375 for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are lightly browned. Remove to wire racks to cool. Yield about 4 dozen.

The bluish lights are LEDs that I had on the Christmas tree a few years ago. They are very energy efficient.

Welcome to the seventh edition of ‘I recommend’. As the name implies, this is a share to recommend just about anything you like or have tried. It can be a book, drink, food, movie, music CD-anything. Fun stuff!

Ok, so you are plum tuckered out and need a break. What do you do? I like to play on the internet. My brother sent me a link to this site and I could make flowers all day. I bet you could print them out and make some purdy cards too-

dahlia

I call this Dahlia.

This is a fun place called Txt2pic
They give you images that you add words too. I think LL Cool J said something like this when he was on Rachael Ray (but he said ‘the 40s’):

confucius

I’ll be back to add more links as I go through my bookmarks through the day.

Bloggers-this is a meme kind of post to help you think of things to add to your blog. So if you comment here, don’t forget to post about your favorite Christmas music (or whatever) on your blog. It doesn’t have to involve an entire blog post, just a small part of it. Thanks. : )

Short and sweet-what are your favorite Christmas CDs? I think the yearly offerings from Hallmark are pretty good. James Taylor did one a few years back and it’s excellent.
jtxmas
Michael McDonald was the next year or so-love his soulful voice. I’d like to get Sheryl Crowe’s Hallmark CD-new this year.

Love Sarah McLachlan’s too:

Other favs- Nat King Cole, The Carpenters, Jewel, Mariah Carey and Josh Groban.

My favorite radio station starts playing Christmas music 24/7 before Thanksgiving now. Although I enjoy hearing some favorites, I want to pull my hair out by the 18th of December I’m so sick of the music.

I do enjoy Handel’s Messiah. When I went to community college, I signed up briefly for the choir there and we were going to perform it. Not an easy piece of music to learn, especially for sopranos. I ended up leaving the choir, but later was in our church choir for a number of years. I told Bri I may join again next year.

I thought I’d recommend some online shopping places. Over the last few years, I found it easier to shop online. Not to say I don’t go to a few of my favorite stores (TJ*Maxx, Home*Goods, Wally World), but I do not like to have to stand in long lines. It helps that I don’t buy for a ton of people. I find that doing a search on Google is great too. I believe there is a Google shopper where you can bookmark interesting finds.

My favorite place by far is Amazon.com. Sean and I both have wishlists there. Amazon isn’t just books, it’s clothing, appliances, etc. I like that you can find a book you like and have the option to buy it from an Amazon associate if it is gently used (or even new) at a lower price. I just went on there and bought my mom a few paperdoll books for her collection.

I also like Overstock.com. I believe during this season, they have free shipping or very low shipping. Sean is getting PlayStation 4 as a gift to himself (his grandfather gives him money) and is getting a lower priced, refurbished model. I had an Entertainment.com coupon (I get the coupon book for this area each year and it includes .coms and stores also), so he saved another 10%. I think he is saving close to $100 buying it there. Not bad.

I like Dover Publications-a book site-where they sell amazing books on just about anything from paperdolls to cliparts. I utilize their Friday freebies. You sign up and can get a sampling of their books each Friday. I have an huge folder of them for my artwork.

There’s always eBay, Cafepress, Imagekind, Current and the various stores online. I ordered both my mom’s camera and printer and Sean’s camera last year from Wally World. They were last minute thoughts and thank goodness they came in time.

Happy Shopping!

It’s that time of year when we are closed up indoors and subject to getting sick, especially with a cold or the flu. Brian and I got a flu shot a few weeks ago, the first in many years. It’s not a bad idea. That lead me to think of other things that help with your colds and bugs.
First of all, found this on elise.com

Mom’s Cold-Season Chicken Soup Recipe
Ingredients
4 cups of homemade chicken stock
Fat from the homemade chicken stock
1 yellow onion, peeled and roughly diced
2 carrots, sliced in half-inch slices (about the same amount as onion)
2 celery stalks, sliced in 1/4 inch slices (about the same amount as the onion)
1 Tbsp fresh parsley leaves
1 Tbsp of chopped greens from a green onion (green part of the green onion).
1/4 teaspoon poultry seasoning
1/8 teaspoon (a pinch) of crushed red pepper flakes (or a small pinch of cayenne)
Salt and pepper to taste
Method

In a 4 qt saucepan, heat a tablespoon of chicken fat (that has risen to the surface and solidified from your homemade stock) on medium high heat. If you don’t have enough chicken fat, you can add some olive oil. Sauté the vegetables in the fat until the carrots are almost done. While you are sautéing the vegetables, add the seasoning – the poultry seasoning, the crushed red pepper flakes, a pinch of salt and a pinch of pepper. Seasoning like this during the cooking of the vegetables brings out their flavor. According to my mother, crushed red pepper flakes or cayenne is very helpful for a cold, which is why it is part of this recipe. Add the 4 cups of stock. Bring to a low simmer. Add the fresh parsley and green onion greens. Check seasoning and adjust to taste.

Serve with (at least) day old crusty French bread.

Serves 3.

My Grandmom Ruth swore by this:

vicks

When I took Sean to a local pediatrician, she thought that using this was funny-an old wives tale! I still use it in the wintertime-it’s really soothing in my opinion. It opens up your head. You rub a little dap of it around your collarbone.
My grandmom also used a ‘mustard plaster’ for severe chest congestion. She swore it saved her mother-in-law’s life one time. You take an old sheet- (about 2′ x 2′) and folded it up to the size of a small pillow. I believe she mixed veggie oil with dry mustard in a pot to warm it up into a paste (the link uses egg whites or flour). She then spread it on the inside of the folded sheet. She probably wrapped in it plastic wrap or a small towel and placed it on your chest. It got warm, but it does break up mucus.
We just added this to the medicine closet:
airborne

I may have used it once, but Sean used it when Brian and I got the terrible sinus colds around New Year’s (this year) and he didn’t get it!
Upping your Vitamin C intake is good. Get some hand sanitizer and keep some in your car too.
I swear by Sudafed for a stuffy head as a last resort. I also use BioAllers spray, a homeopathic nasal spray. Salt water spray is good too.
Hope these help you out! And do share other remedies here.

Here are gadgets and an appliance that we think are pretty awesome:

Our first digital camera was a Canon Powershot S30.

canonps

I thought it was pretty cool and so portable! It was the first camera where we didn’t have to use a viewfinder. One issue is this that the batteries need charging all the time. And you can’t shrink down the photos without making the image less crisp (that could happen with any camera though). Save your photos at their original size and burn them to a disk! I still use the camera as it has the video feature which is nice.

Brian read and read camera magazines and in December, 2006 we purchased a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi.

canon-eos

So here I was faced with using camera with a viewfinder again which took some getting use to. But the photo quality is amazing! It was pricey, but a dream come true. Our camera still ranks #1 on Flickr for Canon cameras. There is a newer one out now, so if you can find the Rebel XTi second hand, you are getting a good investment. I’ve had people tell me I have a great camera just by seeing me carrying it around my neck! I can take pretty decent photos off the tv like this:

Sweet Glinda

An appliance I recommend is the GE Spacesaver Microwave.
Embossed tin back
It is so great to have a special nook for a microwave after having one take up counter or table space over the years! It has a rack if you want to heat up two things at a time (haven’t tried it yet). It reheats things well in general. I believe it was fairly inexpensive. My other appliances are Magtag. They are nice, but the dishwasher is nothing like the GE I had for all those years before we remodeled. I like the size of the frig, but sometimes it freezes my milk or other beverages if you get them in the way of vent inside.

Hope my post helps and please feel free to add your blog link and recommendations.

I just put on my CD player and it is loaded with Christmas music (from last year!). Josh Groban is singing his heart out right now!

Week #2 of ‘I Recommend’ had no participates. I’m thinking Sunday isn’t a good day. Anyone have any suggestions? I thought it would be fun. You can share anything you like or have tried. A recipe, a car!, a book. Anything!! : )

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yesterday I decided to tackle some tidying up in the bedrooms. Since your bedrooms should be the ‘cleanest’ rooms in the house ‘ *cough, cough*! I used my trusty static duster (I already recommended it a few weeks back) and went to town. I even went through old make-up and tossed eye shadows and lipstick (since I mainly wear lip gloss now). I did this because I got an all new Ulta make-up kit (pink one for $19.95) as an early birthday gift ( the store is nice, but the women who work there are so snooty). I also cleaned out a basket I keep next to the bed for books. I had really stuck a ton of stuff in it. I ran across some baby photos of me and Sean-I do think it was actually from the hospital when Sean was born! What? So I’ll scan them to share. I remember mom bringing in my baby photos to show Bri and his parents and I must have stuck it in the basket. Shame on me! Oh, even the hospital bracelets were in the envelope.
Here’s some:
With my new little guy Sean
Bri tried to get the leaves up with the attachment for the mower, but they were so wet, they were sticking in the chute that leads to the containers. He said he cut a lot of them up. To me, leaves in any form kill the grass. I’ll have to see what he did. The front yard looks ok. I wanted to know if he had added any to the garden to add some goodies to the depleted soil and he said no. Ah the joys of a too big yard with too big trees.
I’m not going to get any bloodwork done until next year either. I told myself I wouldn’t do this, but then I wasn’t feeling good most of the time. I’ll tell you it has to be stress mainly. I have my mom saying weird stuff. I can’t beg for my brothers to bother with her. They can be asses if they chose to be-I think it’s awful. Letting a 78 yr old lady take trash down a 100 ft stone driveway twice a week! And that’s just one thing they don’t do. Aren’t guys suppose to take care of their moms? I told Sean he better dang make sure he does! ; ) I was reading a forwarded email from my uncle about how a lady who had had a double mastectomy and her faithful dog ‘Lucky’ had been sorrowing after her while she slept. Lucky brought all his most cherished possessions and put them on the lady. Lucky gave her a reason to get better. My mom needs a Lucky.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Anyone know a good gift for a second marriage? We aren’t really close to Bri’s cousin, but he invited us to the wedding. Since we missed his brother’s gala wedding a few years ago (because Bri’s dad, his uncle wouldn’t attend), we thought we’d go to this one since his dad isn’t well-so he has an excuse.

Rachel was my mystery ‘soon to meet’ blogger pal, but we postponed going to Longwood Gardens or the Brandywine River Museum until they have their Christmas displays set up. We did chat (she is an excellent listener and she understands why this blog is called what it is) for over an hour. I can’t wait to meet her in person soon! Thanks for lending an ear tonight Rachel!

Added late Sunday morning:

My friend Cathy S., the founder of Love Quilts is doing a wonderful thing in memory of our dear friend Charlotte who passed away in June of this year. If you cross stitch and want to make a sick child happy and snug under a quilt, they you may enjoy stitching for Charlotte’s Kids. Over the years it’s meant a lot to me to stitch for Love Quilts (over 40 squares). Now with Charlotte’s memory involved, I will join in to honor her. I know many of my stitching pals do exchanges. Why not do something like this for a change? The notes of thanks and the photos of the children with their quilts is enough to melt your heart. When some of the children have sadly passed on, their parents hung up their Love Quilts at the wake or funeral. Your stitching will be out there in the big world being loved and honored too.
