Thursday Thunkies

Standard

1. Have you ever played Bulls***?
Probably under another name. We use to play all kinds of card games. My grandmom even taught us poker!

2. A dog licks you on your face. Are you disgusted or thinking it was sweet?
A puppy-sweetness, an older dog-would wonder what he licked before he got to my face.
3. Tell us about a fun/special memory you have of a grandparent.
On my gosh, my grandmom Ruth helped to raise us! There are so many memories. She use to scold us and then chase us with the yardstick or a neon orange Hot*Wheel track. She loved her costume jewelry and wore a lot of it at once. Around the house she would just toss on whatever was clean-floral tops with plaid skirts. She did all the cooking and we got use to pot roast, meat sauce and spaghetti, chicken and dumplings and stew. I do continue to make my own versions of her meals.

4. Have you ever pet a rat?
I believe the neighbors had one and I did!

5. If I walked into your kitchen, where are the cups?
Do you mean like coffee mugs-they are on the right on their own shelf-a must have.

6. Since you already let me in your home, I found the cup and had water, now where’s the bathroom from the kitchen?
Ok-you make a left and another left-first door on the left!

7. Have you ever pet a turtle or tortoise? Had pet turtles, so yes!

Show & Tell

Standard

Here is my share for today. I found this little cabinet at a liquidator place. It’s great because it holds the Art trading cards I make and receive. The doors had a photo of some vintage man, so I replaced it with old family photos of Brian’s grandmom at the top, my maternal great grandmom and her daughters, my grandmom Ruth and her sister Ethel and finally of my maternal greats on the 4th of July and their children. I believe it only cost $6 as some of the finish isn’t done correctly (it’s sticky) and you can’t see it anyway.

Family time

Standard

Although Sean graduated from Penn State a few months ago, we had a pizza party celebration for him Sunday evening at Bert*ucci’s. He had almost his entire extended family except for one uncle. I’m sure many know who I am referring to. Be that as it may, he sat with his 4 cousins and had a swell time.

Baby Dianne and Mom mom Ruth, originally uploaded by DianthusMoon.

My grandmother Ruth was also my second mom who helped raise her 4 grandkids. She gave up her freedom to travel and maybe live with her sister in Florida to help my mom out. ‘Mom-mom’ passed away in 2000 at almost the age of 97! Of course I didn’t take this photo as I am in it! I have a great one of her that I took when my son Sean was christened, but I gave it to my mom-need to scan it one of these days.

Show & Tell

Standard

My brother is making scrapbooks using old photos he’s found around my mom’s house since he’s been cleaning there and is moving in with her soon. This is our late maternal grandmother Ruth at where I think is Longwood Gardens where I go all the time now (it’s only 6 miles from our house). I’m almost certain this is the rose room because of the way it is laid out-it looks like rose room now. I don’t recall ever seeing this photo-I’m digging that big furry collar she is wearing.

New Year card 1939, originally uploaded by DianthusMoon.

My one brother is sorting through stuff-mainly photos- in our mom’s house and decided to make scrapbooks of what he is finding. I borrowed a finished one he made for mom and this on of the many quaint things in it. It’s a 70+ year old New Year’s card from my grandfather Alan to my grandmom Ruth. I thought it was so cute. My ‘Pop-pop’ was good at card giving as I’ve seen a few now and then. Wish I had know him-he passed away when I was only two months old.

The temps are climbing here-going to the upper 80s over the weekend! That’s too warm for April! I woke up with a sore throat, just on one side, so I hope I’m not getting a cold. The allergens are in the air too, especially with this spike in temps!

Easter recap

Standard

I hope everyone had a lovely Easter! We had a wintry, chilly day, about 10 degrees below normal. We attended Mass and there were also two baptisms, which stretched it out a bit. We left before the little ones were given their yearly Easter eggs. Many parents still dress their little ones up for Easter-the girls especially with their frilly dresses and cute hats. My son dressed in jeans and boots and he was not alone.
I had to run to a convenience store to get milk and bread as the Giant was closed. Cooking the spiral cut ham was a breeze and I had pre-cooked the potatoes for potato salad and also had asparagus and green beans. My mom and brother Don (he hasn’t been here since Sean was in kindergarten!)arrived about 4:30 and we sat down at 5 to eat. Mom wanted to do the dessert, so she came with a store bought strawberry angel food cake with lots of whipped cream-like icing. Brian and Sean took dinner to Bri’s dad. My company left at 7:15 and I proofread Sean’s paper for 1.5 hours. I had a busy day which went well.

Happy 10th Sweet Niece

Standard

My niece T. turned 10 today and we were invited to a nice dinner at her house. It was really good steak, shrimp, mac and cheese and salads.
Here’s a card I made for her:

Flying solo on Sunday

Standard

I just talked to Sean about 11:50 est (Sunday) and he was waiting on his luggage out in Las Vegas! He had 12 hours of travel today and is beat. He left State College and drove himself and two buddies to the Pittsburgh airport. The flight was delayed about 1 hour 45 minutes. So the entire day his dad and I were on pins and needles as this was Sean’s first non-family air flight (He’s only been on 3 other plane trips in his life). Here’s where we watched the progress of his flight:
sean-flight
As you can see, they were flying over the corner of Texas at the time of this screen capture. He flew through 9 states. Knowing Sean, if he could, he would have wanted to stop and check each one out if he had the time.
I’ll keep you posted on his trip. It’s a conference/job fair for Geography majors.
My mom and her friend Jim stopped by for a little bit today. We weren’t very good hosts as we were waiting for Sean to board the plane. After dinner, we ran down to the grocery store and it was pretty much empty. Bri will have my van again, so I wanted to get shopping out of the way.

My nephew K. enters the teen years today. Hope he has a great 13th birthday. Even though Sean doesn’t have any siblings, he has watched K and T grow up and they really like their cousin.

Here’s Giggles Boy!

Standard

This is ‘almost complete’. I didn’t do all the beading, but I think it doesn’t show up that well anyway. I did one line of it along the bottom left of the ‘angel’. The beads are suppose to go all around the angel. Do you think I need them since I have the pretty sparkly fabric to represent snow?

When I started this, at least 5 years ago if not longer, I cut the fabric too small, so I couldn’t include the words ‘snow angel’. I don’t think I need them either. It wasn’t an easy stitch, that is hard fabric to work on. I’m happy with him-yes, it’s a boy. Not sure if I will do the girl too.

My father-in-law seems better today, thanks for your comments. I think he had indigestion really bad or he swallowed incorrectly. He ate eggs, sausage and toast for breakfast.
I am having some sinus issues, but am sneezing and taking Sudafed. The temps outside are fluctuating so much, they are bothering lots of people. I’m getting 5 little cavities filled in a few days, so I want to nip this in the bud.
