To Wilmington we go!

Standard

Sean and I saw that Friday, the 4th was the last day for the Greek Food Festival a stone’s throw away from here in Wilmington, DE. at the Greek Orthodox Church. It’s one of those events you hear and read about that are local and you never go. We decided we were in the mood for stuffed grape leaves and spinach pie, so we went! The ‘true’ festival was probably in the evening-you know with the music and dancing. When we got there it was mainly take-out, though inside the church they had a food line and tons of tables-all filled up. The tables outside in the blazing sun were almost empty. We decided to order and take it home. We got some samplers of all the Greek food and Sean got a big salad for his dinner at work. I really love the route down there (Route 52) with the scenery and quaint little towns you whiz through. The food was really tasty and different too. I think it’s worth the trip. But alas, no Baklava!

Such a pretty location. I love church architecture.

V.P. Joe Biden’s ‘home’ post office in Greenville, DE-taken out the car window! I love the sky in this shot. I still toss my little Canon powershot in my purse and it’s about 6-7 yrs old.

Happy 28th Anniversary to my brother Dave and his wife Mary Anne. Brian and I happen to meet at their wedding, so it’s an anniversary for us too!

This is a few years old, but I really like how the light sparkles in my little pond. I need add a waterlily in there this year. I saw one coming up, but it’s smaller than a dime. I usually have one or two residents living in there. Last year’s ‘couple’ passed as we had to fish them out, I mean Bri fished them out! This year there seems to be only on critter in there and he tends to hang out where I have to step to fix the pump. He better watch out. : )

I always thought this was the coolest photo of my mom-her better ‘half’ is herself! I have to give photo credit to her friend Jim, but it was mom’s camera.
This is in Washington, DC in the late 80s at the Smithsonian’s American History museum. ‘All in the Family’ was certainly a tv comedy that looked at many angles of life. Brian and I just saw this exhibit in April of this year and they added Edith’s chair plus Archie’s hat also.

Welcoming May

Today it almost hit 80 degrees, so I took my ‘flower’ money and headed to one of my favorite nurseries. Big 6 packs (sometimes more included) are only $2.99 which I think is great. I cashed in coins we save in a can and got over $70, but used some, so had about $55 which I had no problem spending. Beautiful flowers. Here’s my annual photo of me with the annuals! (I thought that was pretty funny).

I just got the bandana t-shirt at Tar*get Thursday night. Sean was off, so we went to visit my mom and went to BJs* Wholesale Club for a few goodies. We had shrimp pizza at Ber*tucci’s afterwards. I had some Cha*Cha money on my debit card (remember I answer questions as a  human search engine), so I got some things at Home*Goods-a pretty box for my paper stuff, a small seashell mirror that sits on the table and a neat hat. It’s basically pocket money and it’s a treat to have it to buy goodies once in a while.

I started to plant the pink polka plants and snapdragons last night, but it was a bit muggy and I gave up after planting a few. I didn’t buy any white flowers, so I need a few. They look neat at night.

Hoping to go to a  community yard sale later, another warm day expected.

Have a great weekend!

Treasure ATC, originally uploaded by DianthusMoon.

I am addicted to cutting up photos (copies) and papers, using rubber stamps and stickers to make them fit on a 2.5″x3.5″ card called and artist trading card. I’ve made tons of them and I have traded tons of them. The one showed here was given to my niece. I just bought a ton of new papers, so I’ll be busy on my cards again. I was in a bit of a slump, but I’m raring to go again. I think trading them with people around the world is one of the best things about making ATCs. I have great pals on Flickr-many from England. I have also traded on Swapbot.com and have gotten a card from Israel. : )

Here’s a link to my set on Flickr (almost 600!)

Washington in the spring

Standard

Washington DC, pt 2
We had a whirlwind of a trip to Washington, DC from April 14-16th (the 14th was our 26th anniversary). Sean has been attending the AAG (geography) meetings now for two years. Last year, while still a senior at PSU, he went to Las Vegas, but with a handful of pals. This year he asked us to go along as it was a driving trip and since we haven’t been down for over 10 yrs, we agreed as it probably would be fun!
The trip down was faster than coming home. We had to stop for a quick lunch (why Mc*Ds?) and then we headed to where the conference was so Sean could register. It was a nice Marr*iott with funky garage parking. It only took Sean a few minutes to register and we hopped back in the car to find out it was $17 to park in the garage from get this, 0-2 hours. What a rip off! We should have gone to where we were staying, took the shuttle to Union Station, and then the metro to the Marr*iott. That’s what Sean ended up doing a few times the next day anyway.
We stayed in a fairly new Holiday*Inn Express, but we had to take the above mode of transportation to get around. And they charged $14 a day to park there. Wednesday night we did get a free pasta dinner at the HIE-it was a catered one. Not bad for free. We headed to Union Station that evening to look around and see where the metro was. It’s a fabulous place with restaurants in every corner of the main area and shops in the other areas. I ended up buying a neat t-shirt with some of the founding fathers in silhouettes wearing ipods.
Thursday was the busiest day and I don’t know how I did the walking I did after being sick and laid up a bit. Sean went to the conference and Bri and me headed to Smithsonian/mall area. We decided to venture to the American History museum (my favorite) and saw Julia Child’s kitchen (fairly new and shown in the movie Julia and Julie) and Michelle Obama’s Inaugural gown. She’s really tall! Her jewelry and Jimmy*Choo shoes were also next to the dress. We also say Carol Burnett’s ‘Gone With the Wind’ curtain dress-so funny! I have photos of all the above.
After the American History, I wanted to see the Holocaust museum, which was down and across the street. That was fairly crowded with groups of kids. We saw the German/Hitler propaganda exhibit (definitely brain washing). We also saw an exhibit about a German boy named Daniel who was a Jew who went from living in a nice home to a concentration camp-very moving.
When we caught up with Sean, I was starting to get very fatigued. We took the metro to where Ford’s Theater and the Hard Rock Cafe are (10th St). We did get inside the Hard Rock (4th one we have visited now), but could not get in the theater as it was the anniversary of Lincoln’s death and there was about 200 people waiting to get inside. We went in a few touristy shops and I got my mom a glass prism with ‘holograms’ of the sights (she loved it). When we got to Union Station, we decided to get our anniversary dinner there at a place called ‘America’. Sean parted ways as he had a reception to attend and got his free dinner at the hotel. He also met up with a friend who lives in Virginia now. The dinner was great (I had salmon and Brian had steak). The waiter even brought us a sliver of fudge cake with my key lime pie because he knew it had been our anniversary. Very nice.
The last day was equally as hectic! We checked out early and went to the National Arboretum. You know I had to see that place. It had some lovely areas, especially the bonsai. It was approaching 80, so a bit warm. They have a serious carpenter bee problem and the males were swarming all over the place! After we walked around there, Sean wanted to see the Jefferson Memorial. The GPS was leading us in the right direction, but we couldn’t figure out where to park. We finally did and had quite a walk to the Memorial. Sean was impressed and was glad we found it. We then decided to go to Arlington Cemetery to view just the Kennedy graves. We had trouble with the GPS again. We went there with no lunch, just some snack foods to hold us over. It’s a hilly place and I was tired when we got up to the Kennedys. The guys decided to see the Tomb of the Unknowns and I found a bench and waited…and waited. It was windy and both me and the lady next to me sneezed. I caught up to the guys heading down another path to the visitor center and used the ladies’ room. When I came out of the bathroom, I got the worst tickling feeling in my throat and started to cough and wheeze for about 45 seconds to a minute. That’s all I needed was to pass out at a cemetery! I figured I had exercise induced ‘asthma like’ symptoms. But I had just sneezed and maybe that brought something up enough to constrict my lungs for a minute. No inhaler. Very scary! It hasn’t happened since. Knock wood.
We left Washington then and got stuck in the Friday traffic heading out of town. We ended up not eating a square meal until close to 6 when we stopped in a small Maryland town. We got home about 7:30 that night. Glad to be home! I like seeing different things, but I’m definitely a country girl through and through.

How about this one dear?

Standard

How about this one dear?, originally uploaded by DianthusMoon.

Continuing with the sweet Chickadees. I just thought this was so cute, like they were house shopping.
Did a little shopping myself for a few things for the Washington, DC trip-just a few tops, shorts, pants, socks and a nightie, most bought at good ol’ Wally World. We are all coughing in the morning-allergies are murder this year. I had to get up at 6:45 am and take Clari*tin which helped.
I enjoyed yesterday going outside a lot- taking photos mainly, but missed the allergy medicine and thus had to take it this morning.
My procedure hasn’t helped that much yet, as I am still getting something-24 days after it. It’s better though, I had a feeling it wouldn’t go away all the way. I feel terrible that wonderful actress Dixie Carter died from basically not having what I had done. I guess when you are 70, they must not think in those terms. My own grandmom had a D&C in her 80s and lived to be almost 97.
Tomorrow will be getting things packed to go. We are trying to think of places in DC that we haven.’t seen. I’d like to see the Holocaust Museum or zoo. Sean’ been to the Holocaust. He’d like to see Ford’s Theater and should see Arlington Cemetery. We haven’t been down that way for over 10 yrs, so it’s a whole new world with the GPS. We are thinking about Mt. Vernon, which may be pretty this time of year. Lots to think about!
