Friday’s Show and Tell

Standard

Over 25 years ago, my then fiance and I were browsing through a bookstore and we ran across The Fannie Farmer cookbook in paperback. I thumbed through it and asked Brian if he’d buy it for me as a gift. I probably said I would like to practice some of the recipes, so he did buy it. From the condition of the poor book, you can see it has been a standby-like for how to cook a certain cut of meat or a vegetable. It even has duct tape holding it together. I would say I used it a lot for baking, by far my favorite kitchen activity.
This past Christmas, he bought me the Martha Stewart Cookie cookbook off my wish list. I needed it like a ‘hole in the head’ (as my cookbooks run in the 100s), but I love to bake cookies. I haven’t started to use it yet, but will!

A newer cookbook gift from Brian

Terry mentioned she gets recipes mostly off the internet now-I’m guilty of that too! But there is something about holding a book and looking at a photo of something that looks good and trying to replicate it.

I have the tv on Conan O’Brien and the last gig was a ‘balloon guy’ named John Cassidy. I took a peek and here it was this guy we use to see perform at the St. David’s Fair over the years. Check out this link-he holds the Guinness World Record for making the most balloon animals in one hour! Pretty neat to see him on national tv after seeing him roam the grounds of a church fair.
My friend’s ex-husband and his partner have been on Conan too-they parody Country Western singers using the names Doyle and Debby.

Since ‘aftermath’ means-results, this is what I stopped on when I was going through my recent photos. Now Bonsai is definitely an art form and is achieved from the results of careful and tedious trimming and training of a variety of trees and bushes. I would say these are a white birch maybe? I didn’t get the name. These were under two feet tall. They don’t have their leaves as it’s the wintertime. I saw a photo on the web of it in full green tiny leaf that I can’t seem to share here. There were other fine examples of Bonsai here at Longwood Gardens. These are usually decades old.

About 200 photos later

Sean and I tried again at Longwood Gardens and practically had the entire place to ourselves! Yeah. I think I took at least 200 photos and narrowed it down to 175, which I will upload to Flickr. The gardens are using LED lights, so all the wrapped trees and hand fashioned trees look brighter. I really need to see how people are getting tri-pods in there, that would make a difference. I’ll share a few shots, first of the face I’ll be missing in a few days:

Taken through a window in the orchid room. Sean treated me to dinner in the ‘fancy’ restaurant at Longwood. He had pasta with olive, mushrooms and capers and I had Citrus grilled chicken with white beans and spinach. I treated him to dessert in the cafe section. I had chocolate chip cake and he had a creme brulee type of cheese cake.

John & Stefanie’s Wedding-Nov. 28, 2008

John & Stefanie's Wedding-Nov. 28, 2008
We had a nice evening, though eating dinner at around 9 was late, but we had delicious appetizers too. The actual ceremony was just the bride and groom reading their own vows to each other-very sweet. We sat with the groom’s three children, a bit younger than Sean. They were very nice, but the youngest girl was emotional seeing her dad remarry. The Faunbrook is really a lovely bed and breakfast. It was nice to see Bri’s family.

What we bought at the church bazaar

Standard

I made some ‘brownie kiss’ cupcakes for the church bazaar on Saturday (no photo). They were from scratch and came from ‘Taste of Home’ cupcake email. The batter was really thick, like icing, so I added a little milk to it. It helped a bit. The recipe said to ‘bake until the tops springs back’ and I wish I had taken them out sooner as they were getting a bit dry. We had to try one to make sure they were good-lol.

So I did buy a few things. We bought the 3 lb. bushel (I guess) of mushrooms for $5, and I need to do something with them today or tomorrow. I made a mushroom omelet for dinner Saturday night and they were really fresh and tasty. Any ideas? I’m thinking of marinating them too.

Brian found a seller with quartz crystals and he wanted to buy a piece, so he did for only about $7. My friend on Flickr said you can dig them up all over Arkansas.
Brian bought a quartz crystal today

I bought a few new Christmas pieces that you will see soon.

Sean is safe and sound here at home. He arrived at 11:15 pm on Friday night. I don’t think he’ll drive at night anymore as it’s such a tedious drive. He took his dad and me out to dinner last night to The Olive Garden where Brian and I had their shrimp and chicken Carbonara-yummy! And Sean says he’ll get me a Phillies World Champ t-shirt too.

Lavender waterlily
I thank goodness for the ‘search’ feature in my Flickr photos. I knew I used the word reflection a few times. This was taken at one of my favorite and most photographed place on earth-Longwood Gardens. The waterlily ponds knock your socks off! I was told by the caretaker of the ponds, a man standing in the pond at the time, that they dye the water black.

I can’t wait to see what other people do with this.

My birthday dinner

Standard

Click link to enlarge and select ‘all sizes’ or look at the photostream with the individual snaps. I didn’t want to take up too much space here.
My birthday November 19th, originally uploaded by DianthusMoon.

It was so cold tonight! We are lucky such a nice restaurant is only about 5 miles away. We practically had the place to ourselves for a while, hence the photos. The waiter was nice enough to take our photo too. I didn’t see lobster tail on the interesting menu. I decided not to get the prime rib ‘special’. My oh my, was that an expensive dinner, plus it could have been a bit firmer, so I brought some home. Brian had flounder and salmon on a bed of spinach (he isn’t a big fan of the green stuff). I had some shredded zucchini on my salad. Bri had a Caesar salad. I had my favorite cocktail (like my second of the year)-an Apricot Sour. Try one sometime.

Bri bought me a yellow cake with fudge icing. Let’s just say I’m glad I had Rolaids and peppermint tea in the house-for both of us! Bri wasn’t really up to par today. He gave me a lovely pearl necklace-not the real round pearls, but it’s really pretty, I’ll model it soon.

This was also the 26th anniversary of our engagement. : )

Here’s a recipe for an Apricot Sour. One of my former bosses introduced me to it back in the early 1980s and I get one everytime I go to a fancy restaurant:
Apricot Sour Recipe
Ingredients
2 oz Apricot Brandy
1 oz Lemon Juice
1/2 tsp Superfine Sugar
Pour the apricot brandy, lemon juice and sugar into a cocktail glass half-filled with ice cubes. Shake well, and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with an orange wedge and a maraschino cherry, and serve.

Show & Tell

Standard

This is one of the two elementary schools that I attended. The other school was called Rose Tree and was within walking distance of this school. When I was in grade school, we walked to school. I remember kindergarten in the basement and trying to drink milk (out of the little cartons) that I didn’t care for. The basement was also used for the cafeteria. I fondly remember the see- saws and singing ‘Mockingbird’ which turned into a hit for James Taylor and Carly Simon a few years later. Speaking of James and Carly, their daughter Sally Taylor must have known a teacher at Walden School, as she has a photo of herself with students doing the ‘Ring around the Rosie’ in the yard there (it use to be labeled, so that’s how I knew).

Suddenly music became a serious option in Taylor’s life, if not the only one. And this week she will make two area appearances — at the Painted Bride on Sunday, September 12, and at the Walden School in Media on Monday, Sept. 13 (1999).

Her response to my question “why the Walden School?” was most illuminating. “This is actually my second visit to the school. And I’m really looking forward to it this time. When my booking agent first suggested it, since the school really seemed to want me to perform there, I said I’d have to think about it. I was never more nervous about an appearance in my life! What was I going to sing or say to these children?

Here is the beginning of the year sample of my cursive writing for 3rd grade. I struggled with handwriting as I am left-handed. When I knew we were doing these, I cringed and couldn’t hardly stand to do this. We did it until 4th or 5th grade too. I’m lucky I had one sample of this. Maybe I ripped up the other ones. 3rd grade writing practice 3rd grade writing practice & Sandy Bank
Here’s a sample of my ‘now’ cursive. My husband bought me a tablet to use with the computer (last year) and I just tried it. It’s not that easy to use!
