All about shopping…

Standard

Sherry had some shopping questions on her blog yesterday. And may I say how cool it was to win a surprise from her! Thanks for letting me join the fun! I can’t wait to see what I get. : )
I’m a bargain shopper. The more percentage something is marked down, the more I want it! For example, I hit a 70% off sale at Peebles and got this big canvas of a rooster for my mom’s birthday for $3.00. I’m thinking I could buy the last couple of ones to recycle and do art on! They also have a limited edition Boyd’s bear named Peebles for about $8.00. (why are people putting *s in store’s names? Because of search engines? Like they would put in Pee*bles). Anyway, I think I’ll at least get a few more canvases.
1. Where is your favorite place to shop? Love stores like Tuesday Morning and T.J Maxx. Favorite dept. store is Kohls. Love all the craft stores, but Michaels takes the top place. Do not like grocery shopping unless I am buying ingredients for a special dish or am shopping at BJs Wholesale. And I love thrift stores and the Goodwill.

2. Would you rather shop on-line or in the stores? I like both. I utilize the internet more during the Christmas holidays. I do buy books throughout the year mainly through Amazon. And there is also eBay!

3. If you needed new undergarments, but you saw something that you didn’t really need, but just wanted, which would you buy?
I probably would! Underwear is so boring when you get to be my age.

4. What really annoys you about other shoppers?
People that don’t move out of a spot when they know you are trying to get by or want something in the area they are hogging. Those who talk on their blue rays and you think they are talking to you. Someone who picks up something you are about to pick up.

5. Have you ever got up to the checkout stand and had a ton of stuff in your cart and after they rang everything up you realized you didn’t have your money, check book, debit card, or credit cards? I usually have a few forms of payment. I have not had enough money, $5 or so, and have just taken a few things out of the cart so I wouldn’t have to use the debit card too.

6. If you buy something that isn’t necessary or something just for fun do you feel like you have to justify it to yourself or your partner? Not really unless it was pricey. I wish I could ‘just for fun’ buy a Ford Mariner. : )

7. Do you hide those unnecessary things for awhile and then later claim you’ve had them for a long time? No, that’s just silly. We discuss big purchases. And as I said, I usually hunt stuff down that’s on sale.

Have to do some food shopping later-oh joy!
I probably won’t be posting until late afternoon or so tomorrow as I will be getting mom from her surgery.
Has anyone else had allergy issues? They are saying it’s one of the worst seasons so far. I get the stuffy head, post nasal and then congestion in my chest.

Rainy days and Mondays

Standard

It’s Tuesday, and it was another rainy day here. We aren’t use to it! I slept like a rock because of the night before, but my eyes were really achy until late this afternoon. I decided to clean the dolls off and wash the clothes they were in (as seen in my last ‘Show & Tell’ post). It’s sad that I have so few clothes for the girls. I know somewhere I have a huge container of fabric as I planned to make one-of-a-kind Barbies to sell. I can still do that along with everything else, correct?

Anyway, after sniffling over Ellen DeGeneres wedding photos and the little Phillipinian singer Charice Pempengco on Oprah, I decided to make some ATCs called skinnies which are 3″ x 5″  (I usually make 2.5″x 3.5″). They were fun to  put together and brightened my mood.

My mom’s getting tense about her eye surgery in a few days. I don’t blame her! And Brian is getting an update from his aunt about his dad as I write this.

We think we know what kind of television we purchase, thanks to Courtney who sent me a thorough email about how nice Samsungs are. We may go on Friday or Saturday to buy one.

Stand up to Cancer telecast

Standard

I don’t know how anyone could miss this hour long show Friday, the 5th as it was on all three major networks. Maybe cancer can be cured in our lifetime. As someone who had a close call with it last year, I appreciate all the research they can do. Meryl Streep talked about how the March of Dimes was started by Eddie Cantor, on the radio, when he asked people to send a dime for polio research. And we are lucky as a vaccine was found for polio. It could happen with cancer too.

I was touched to see Patrick Swayze speak and hear James Taylor and Sheryl Crow sing ‘Fire and Rain’. Sheryl had the calcifications like I did, but hers were cancer. She looks beautiful now and her little boy Wyatt is adorable. Dana Delaney had her mammogram videotaped. The doctor had felt a large calcification-the bigger they are the better.  I had the small microscopic ones.

I went to the site and went shopping for some little things at Cafe Press. I wanted a t-shirt, but all they had were a trucker’s hat, buttons and stickers. I bought the later two for the time being.

I’m going to keep this as a sticky post (something new at WordPress-yeah),

so you can go shopping if you’d like. If I had more moola, I’d buy more. If I get a little more down the road, I’ll send some to this org.

<————–keep clicking the buttons in my sidebar! The breast cancer site is doing a fundraiser of sorts by the number of clicks they receive.

I have Scrambilitis!

Standard

I had one of those nights where I was looking at the clock every hour and getting up. I couldn’t figure out if it was something I ate or drank-I did have that McD’s sweet tea earlier in the day and green tea for dinner. Then it dawned on me that I sat on the floor after dinner for about 45 minutes sorting out my paper goods. I can’t do this anymore, I did it anyway and I’m sure that’s why I felt funky-that and PMS. And it doesn’t get better as you get closer to 50, it gets really strange and you wonder what is inhabited in your body sometime. Anyway, all night, thanks to Facebook’s Scramble (I have a word IQ of between 99 and 101) I was doing words in my head-ten-tent-taint-faint far-fare….you get the picture. Ugha! That was awful. So I couldn’t turn my brain off. Maybe walking around the Mushroom Festival would have helped, but I decided not to go.

I’m thinking a lot about my mom and FIL too. Mom’s a little snippy. I was coming down tomorrow so Colleen can do my hair, but my brother’s friend lost his mom last week and they are going to the funeral. (the lady felt like she had heartburn for 3 days, but she also weighed over 250, but none the less, that is scary stuff). I said to mom that while she was having her eye surgery, I’d run to get my hair done first. She’s only 5 miles away at the hospital and she said she’ll be there 3-4 hours anyway from 9:30 (when the surgery is suppose to take place). I know they are never on time from my experience with the biopsy last November. So mom said I’d have to call the short procedure to see if she was ready to go home, in a snippy way. I think it will work out.

Not sure what I’m doing today-need to wake up!

Here’s what I did on Saturday, inside during all the rain:

I added some fall garland, leaf candles and some aluminum pieces I had. My mom gave me the little Holly Hobbie recently. I also had bought the candle in front of the mantel clock and was trying to figure out where it would look nice. I love those mosaic pieces I found on deep discount at Value City a few years ago. There’s a string of 5 flickering lanterns that don’t show up well here.

Thanks for everyone who offered help with chosing a tv. It sure isn’t an easy task!

And Jennifer and whoever may have signed up for the J. Holdsworthy meeting at the SS, I signed up too! Yeah!

TV went poof!

Standard

Yes, it’s true! The picture tube (it’s over 10 yrs old I believe), has been going. We had it fixed a few years ago too. There were lines running across the top of the screen for months. Just a few days ago, the lines were creeping into the people on the tv. Very annoying. What Bri thinks went is the switch. We heard a noise and then there was an electrical smell-phew! The tv is now out on the back patio waiting for disposal. We are using Sean’s 20″-we are use to the 27″. My question-we want to get a flat screen now (I think that’s mainly what are sold) and can anyone suggest a brand that you own and works well that doesn’t cost a fortune? (like under $600?) Bri thinks that Walmart makes won’t be any good. And there is a definition factor too. I believe that the ‘big electronics’ companies sells to Walmart under a less known name, just like the food companies do in the grocery stores. Secretly I’ve been wanting a new tv for a few years. ; )

The annual Mushroom Festival is in full swing today after the torrential rain we had yesterday. Bri said that it was still on yesterday-hmmm. Wonder who ventured out in that? I may go up at the tail end of it, maybe around 4. That’s maybe. Not a big fan of crowds. It would be nice to get dinner up there though. Last year I wanted to see the chefs who were from the Bravo show ‘Top Chef’. This year the featured chef is a local guy.

Bri just took a huge bag of food over to his dad’s house. His dad still is very weak, maybe a smudgeon better. His sister-in-law wants to come over tomorrow to help with laundry, so he was up tiding the bathrooms. He’s not eating well at all. This is very stressful for Bri and that rubs off on me. I’m going to call the hospital to see if they have a medical alert device (thanks to Tammy for mentioning this). My FIL leaves the house locked up like Fort Knox though. I guess he’ll have to take his chances during the day as my uncle does. Speaking of my uncle, he couldn’t get up out of his chair a few days ago, and it took three of his neighbors (all older men) to get him up. My mom says he is sitting too much and this was the proof of it. Geez-old guys!

Photo Hunt-Strings

PSHunt

Oh this was a difficult hunt, but I located some dusty strings on this model ship in my son’s bedroom (reflected on his little dresser mirror). I didn’t want to pull out the guitar and I even took this photo:

of Bri’s old slippers (ew and never thought they would get blog time) and this:

Of a pretty tassle hanging from my curio cabinet.

Sherry is doing a Truth or Dare for her blog party. She had quite a dare! My goodness girl!

The only thing I remember is I dared myself to stop these freshman girls in the dorm from slamming their door every time they came in and out. I was older and it was rather annoying. It was before security cameras, I guess, like 1980. I got out the vaseline and coated the door knob. I listened for a reaction within the next 1/2 hour and I heard a ‘ewwwww gross’ as they tried to open the slippery doorknob . HA! I had a good laugh. And I kept a straight face when they told me about it too.

Show & Tell #8

Standard

This is my Barbie case from 1968 or so (I may have gotten it between 1968-1970)

Here are the ‘girls’ and guy(!) that were inside: one Barbie, three Francies, 2 Stacies and one Skipper. I believe Skipper was one of that last Mattel dolls I got. GI Joe is missing his hands. Not sure why he is in there, maybe my younger brother put him in there.

And here are some of the clothes. I thought I had more than this, but maybe they weren’t put away and got tossed. Remember, all these things are probably at least 40 years old!

I plan to clean them up a bit before I put them away today. I’ll pretend I’m 9 again. I need to think this way sometimes, don’t you?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So I am a bit bummed as one of my favorite places to go online looks like it dissolved today. Tribe.net no longer has a web address. One of my friends there joined Facebook to find me. I have meet some awesome people there, some I know are friends for life. My good friends also have Flickr and Facebook accounts.
And to save the best for last….look what Lee for Lake Stitcher sent me in the mail yesterday, a day I needed a bit of sunshine:
It’s a covered Altoid’s tin filled with chamomile tea because she knows my tummy acts up once in a while. I so appreciate the thoughtfulness from a fellow Pennsylvanian. She told me to keep my chin up in this interesting time of our life when parents and hormonal changes can bring you down. Thanks again Lee!
Have a great weekend!
It ain’t easy
Standard
We just got back from Bri’s dad’s house. Bri had to go over there twice today. His dad made an 8:15 doctor’s appt and Bri went with him and then went back to work. About 12:30, the phone rang here and ‘Pops’ had slipped off his bed and tried for ½ hour to get himself up to no avail. Bri came home to get his dad’s house keys and grab a sandwich. When we got there, Bri had to literally scrap his dad up off the floor. We had to locate a place that rented walkers. We also bought him a cane. This is fine and dandy, but Bri can’t be running back and forth to his house which takes 45 minutes to one hour to get there. He’s got to swallow his pride and accept help. He’s going to make Bri sick.
Opps, I did it again…
Standard
A few months ago, I drove into a water filled crater and put a bubble in my left rear tire. This happened as I was putting a package in the correct mailbox down the road to save the mailman from doing it. Bri had to jack up the car, take off the damaged tire and put on the ‘donut’-spare tire and reverse the process.  Well today, I was stopping at the bank to tap the MAC machine and misjudged a curb that is at the left as you turn in. The bank is off a busy road going through Kennett, and I am always afraid someone is going to rear end me there. Well I went over the curb like I was in the General Lee on the old Dukes of Hazzard show! Repeat above with Bri, but it’s the front left tire with the big bubble in it. My neck is complaining a little, but I managed to do the week’s food shopping, so think I’m ok-it wasn’t like I flew 10 feet in the air, just came down with a bump. The seat belt really went tight on the left side, where it happens to bother me anyway. And I was in that area to mail off all goodies for people too. Darnit!  So that’s my story, and I’m sticking with it.
Hoping for a peaceful night.
