Easter like 1970

Standard

The local weatherman is predicting a chilly Easter (in the 40s) like we had in 1970-the last time it was this cold. Sean thought he’d be smart and say-bet you can’t remember that Easter. I do have a pretty good memory-I was in 5th grade, had a gem of a teacher-Miss Brown-who gave us interesting postage stamps from all over the world for perfect spelling tests. I did get mostly 100s if I remember. That was the year mom gave me a cute little stamp album (about 5-10 pages with the places to tuck the stamps in a row-like 5 to a page). I have it around here someplace.

I went to the doctor and saw a new, young lady doctor. We discussed me and I am trying something for three months. I hope it agrees with me. Have to mention the Amish couple in the gyn office-what a surprise! I guess some are coming around more to western medicine.

Here are some gifties that I received in the mail this week and my little pal Bunny Woodstock:

Spring is really trying to make an appearance

Standard

So much so I had Cosmo the cat out on his harness and we were enjoying the 67 degrees on this sunny, but a bit of a breezy day. The weather is kinda whacking us out-40s one day, 60s the next. We all feel a little congested. Life goes on.

So happy to report my mom says she’s been feeling better over the last few days. She is taking chewable adult vitamins and seems peppier. I’m hoping she keeps up her vitamin regimen. She did say she looked at herself in the mirror and didn’t like what she saw. I guess the first step for anyone is them making the move for their own benefit.

I was sad to hear that Elizabeth Edwards’ cancer has returned in her bone. I hope she gets excellent treatment. The Presidential campaign for John will go on it seems.

Bob Woodward and his wife Lee were on Ellen DeGeneres’ show and I swear I tear up every time they show that film footage when he is slow dancing with Lee and wearing a helmet to protect his head last year. He says on the video, “I can dance but I can’t talk.” Lee just looks at him very lovingly.

Sean and Brian are on my ‘S’ list tonight. They have a habit of tossing a football (!) down the hallway in our little ranch house. I ask them to not do that or they’ll break something. Well tonight they broke a gift from a friend. I need a new frame for it. Made me so angry that all my pleading falls on deaf ears. I told Bri I try not to be into material things, but the gift came all the way from the midwest and didn’t get broken until tonight. I told him I was going to go knock his beloved trains on the floor and he said that would be ‘just mean’. I think meanness is not listening to someone who is making perfect sense. Sean and I are going to get him a gift tomorrow and frankly I don’t really feel like it now, but I will.

Tomorrow is another day, thank goodness!

Family time

Sean drove me down to my brother Ken’s to get my van which he had inspected. It still had a bunch of sleet/snow on it, so Ken and his pal knocked it off-Sean did a little. He’s not much on pitching in. I swear I didn’t teach him that if you get my drift. We gave my nephew Kenny his presents for his upcoming 11th birthday on the 23rd. He liked the rock and roll t-shirt we found for him at the Gap store (he only wears short sleeved shirts) and a little cash. I also made him an Art Trading card and he liked that too. I forgot to photograph it. I have one for Tori all made up for her 8th birthday on April 11th. Then Sean played Playstation2 with Kenny and I talked with Tori while she watched The Disney Channel-her eyeballs were glued to it. : ) Tori and Colleen went to a rollerskating event and Sean and I stayed to visit with the two Kens a little longer. Ken got out the video of when he was cleaning an engine that he had taken out of my Ford Montego back in 1983. He was only about 15-16 yrs old. Then there were footage of him in his prized 1964 Ford Falcon (I know a lot about Fords) and he was peeling out making the tires spin and the exhaust filled the air. The guys got a good laugh.

Ken said he was worried about my mom too and the quality of her home life, said she was pale with black circles around her eyes when he saw her on Friday. He and his pal walked around her yard (after they plowed her driveway) and also saw some damage on her house and her shed roof caved in from all the sleet/snow’s weight. He said he’d fix up the outside but not the inside. I knew I’d have to persuade her to get rid of things. Ken said mom is so stubborn. Makes you sit back and look at your own acquired stuff-speaking of which…

…our basement is a bit discombobulated as Brian spent the day making a path for the furnace guys. Some of my neatly stacked Christmas things got moved here and there. I was going to postpone them coming as I thought we had more to move. I see a few more things that may be in the way. We acquired a lot of junk
stuff in the last 20 years. Oy.

Mixin’ it up!

Mother nature is playing games with us. We’ve had all kinds of weather from sleet, ice and snow. The snow one time was so fine it was like someone was shaving ice in the sky. We are hoping the power stays on. The furnace is running rough too. Tuesday can only come too soon.

Here are some photos I took around the house today:
I uncovered my pond (took off the netting) only for it to get covered again with ice

Fleeting scenes of winter

(At least I hope so!)

Sunset for 3-7

The birds were having a feast at the feeder today. Their little tummies are big and round-golf ball size. I happened to look out the side window and saw all their little prints in the snow (thanks to Bri who also delivered our dinner). The first shot was taken out the window. There was one bird I am trying to identify-not sure if it was a Baltimore Oriole-but he had a white tummy, the sides of his tummy were reddish-orange and the rest of him was black with some white specks on his wings. Carole/Pea helped me to ID this bird as a Bay breasted warbler! I don’t think I’ve ever seen one before:

That warm fuzzy feeling

After Heroes was over last night, a new show came on called the Black Donnelly’s. I tried to watch it for about 20 minutes and couldn’t get into it, so I switched over to find the Oprah Winfrey special about the all girl school she opened in South Africa. I was totally mesmerized by those sweet girls and how happy they were to be able to go to the wonderful facility that Oprah built after 5 yrs in the planning. The last photo that was shown, was Oprah in the middle and surrounded by a sea of smiles (every single girl!) teared me up big time. Oprah said that ‘all the girls are like her daughters’. This touched one girl whose mother left her when she was 4. I can see many lives changing now.

This special will be rebroadcast on Saturday, March 3rd so check your local listings.

I’m doing a little ‘me’ pampering tonight-I couldn’t get a hair appt until 6 tonight and I called a week ago! Cruella DeVille and I could be sisters! I guess my stylist is getting too popular. I plan to shop at a local office supply place for some art card supplies (I’ve made 32 ATC now) and then go to Subway to pickup dinner so I don’t have to cook and run out the door.

My mom is still unwell. She said she was wheezing a lot last night. She has a doctor’s appt at 3. Wish her well as this is about her 3rd week of this illness.

I went and started a new cross stitch project when I have two looming deadlines. Not to worry, the house round robin is nearing completion as I need to finish the garden area in front of the house. The bee and flower for Love Quilts is fine-the poor bee needs it’s wings! I’ll put an updated photo above soon. What I started was a heart shaped design filled with butterflies. My mom gave me the two packages of DMC linen floss for Christmas and they both came with free designs. The fabric I am using is from Sugar Maple-a blend of pinks, greens and a little yellow and blue. It’s a cashel and very nice to work on.

It’s in the 40s today, so down right tropical. Go away snow and ice! Bri almost fell in the driveway this morning as it must have done something during the night.

Look ma, it’s snowing again!

Standard

Thought I’d pop on here to write a post, but the regular log on page for wordpress was MIA. I had to say I wanted to post a comment to a WP post that did appear and that’s how I logged on in a round-about way!

And it is snowing again with probably an episode of ice, like 11 days ago. Luckily, we finally got our Valentine’s din din last night. The restaurant we like is never crowded on Saturday nights and they have good food. I had my usual Kennett mushroom burger. We made a mistake of getting nachos which killed our appetites for our burgers and shrimp dish(<—Sean). The nachos had a tart bbq sauce mixed in with the meat sauce, so good. Sean took a photo of Bri and me, a tradition it seems to becoming each year. He needs to transfer it to the computer.

Brian and I went to the grocery store afterwards, another place that wasn’t crowded. We heard that this store is closing and moving. I can tell their inventory is lower. I kept checking for MSG and even the Gorton’s fishsticks had it. I am going to turn over a new leaf by cooking more from scratch. I do most of the time anyway. Rachael Ray had a yummy looking cod cooked in a pouch with olives, onions, fennel and garlic) on 30 minute meals today. It is Lent after all.

Sean and I rented three movies. One is playing now that I rented for Brian-The US vs. John Lennon. Sean rented ‘The Departed’. I started to watch it with him Friday night and told him I wasn’t interested in seeing the rest of it last night. Too much cursing, beating, killing, etc. Topnotch actors like DiCaprio, Nicholson, Sheen, Damon and Wahlberg and it’s up for Best Picture.

I rented ‘Marie Antoinette’. I enjoyed the scenery and the costumes. The plot was pretty lame. And why didn’t Kirsten Dunst (MA) and Jason Schwartzman (King Louis) at least have some kind of an accent for being Austrian and French? They sounded like kids from southern California. And the choice of music in most of the movie was odd. I guess Sofia Coppola was doing her own ‘thang’.

Pretty costumes

Have a nice Sunday. It’s pot roast night, so I’ll pop that in the oven soon.

A winter scene

Standard

Yeah! I actually did a little something for myself. : ) It took a few months, but I sewed it into an ornament today.

Just finished ornament

Other than that, the temp is up to near 50 and the snow is melting a little. Sean just went for an free oil change (I had a card) and hopefully he’ll stop by the mall to get his snap on sunglasses fixed and to bring home a shrimp topped white pizza which I am craving. And it’s Ash Wednesday too.
I’m one of ‘those people’ who throw ‘stuff’ (mostly in clear plastic boxes)in their bedrooms when she is cleaning for the holidays and company. I did put some under the bed, but they all won’t fit, so I have to bite the bullet and decide what stays and what goes.
My mom sounds awful! She has a loose cough and was at the doctor’s yesterday. She has a sinus infection and bronchitis! I so need to go clean her place, and hopefully will do that in the next few days.

February crawling along

Standard

I try not to let cabin fever bother me too much. I have so much I could do, whether it is cleaning, cooking or crafting-ha-the 3 ‘c’s! I’m here fairly warm in my little haven and my fellas have to go out and brave the cold.

A few of the bloggers in my blogroll said they think they need a break from writing here. I think it happens to the best of us. One lady has two little girls and wants to spend time with them and write some children’s books. I am stalled in a way, but with eBay. I’ve been selling there pretty steadily since Aug. ’99. I find when I purchase something to sell, I do a search and there’s always a number of others selling the same thing. This can be discouraging. I have A LOT of things accumulated for eBay. I think it’s time to get rid of most of it. The last few things I tried to sell went over like a lead balloon. I think since I share the computer with the guys, it’s hard for me to hop on it all the time. When Sean goes away, I see me getting into it again or if all is well, getting a part time job.

For me today, it’s stitching on Carol’s NRR which is coming along beautifully and venturing out to the store. I noticed there is a bunch of snow on the roof of the van. I heard you aren’t allowed to have packed snow on your vehicle and I know in the past it’s flown off. Luckily, I have 1/2 mile to go and probably there won’t be anyone behind me. I hope.

Have a great weekend!

Icy Valentines

Snow!My two guys had the worst time chipping away all the ice and stuff from the cars and trying to clear the drive today. Brian’s whole back was soaked with sweat when he came in over an hour later. The wind is suppose to whip up even more, continuing havoc, especially with the temperature.

We didn’t go out to dinner (of course) so I made the fellas a spaghetti and meatball dinner and more bread. The bread was herb and cheese and the top fell in when it was baking. I don’t know why as the bread yesterday did pretty well. We ate it anyway.

I got Bri the Beatles ‘Love’ cd. Isn’t that the show in Vegas? He now has most of the Beatles ‘newer’ releases. He got me a little sapphire and diamond heart-I have one already and I think he gave it to me last year. (Not too many stores in this immediate area for last minute shoppers). I’ll take it back and chose something else-when I can get out. He also got me a flashcard (hmmm) for the new camera and cute red sockies. I’m hard to buy for, what can I say?

Sean gave us a lovely Victorian decorated card and the verse was so touching. Ahhh…sweet guy. He bought us dinner this past Saturday.

I hope everyone was able to spend quality time with their loved ones today.

Enjoy the video player ‘pod’ I added in my sidebar. It’s spankin’ new by wordpress. Took a while to figure it out, but it’s cool!
