Venturing out

Standard

Sean and I went to the grocery store and church yesterday. I was a bit nervous to go, but my sinuses were good, even with incense wafting through the air on several occasions. We also went to Wendy’s for dinner. It wasn’t until after 11 pm that I had ‘the tickle torture’-rats, almost 24 hours went by without one. We hope to get to BJs/Sam’s Club today so Sean can get food stuff for his dorm room. Before bed I had to take a little cough syrup. I swear that stuff is a hallucinative! The night before I dreamed Suri Cruise was telling tales about her infamous parents-like she was being a parrot to what she heard them saying to each other, some unpleasant things. I found this rather humorous upon awakening, but couldn’t remember exactly what she was telling people. All kids do this anyway. I was good at saying ‘what a mess’ when Sean was little and didn’t he go to the neighbor’s with me and proclaim her kitchen was a mess! Not good. Suri has the cutest little face and haircut and I am always looking at the Celebrity Baby blog and there she is.

Last night’s dream (or early morning) had me in a house in my mom’s old neighborhood when a Coca cola truck pulled in the driveway with balloons and stuff. I decided to see what the fuss was all about, in my t-shirt nightie (no Pam Anderson here) and got embarassed and crawled in the back of another red van. It started up and the older lady was headed to Philly to buy theater tickets! (I told you it was weird). Then I got talking to people in the neighborhood- like an improv group (still in my t-shirt) and went down every week with her. I have no idea what triggered that, unless I was thinking about Publisher’s Clearinghouse and also the Ticketmaster email I get…and one of those blog thingies my friend has us do all the time (are you a people person? )
Anyway, it’s warmer today and will be for the next few days which means my bedroom is not like a barn. We definitely need to go to Home Depot one of these days for a new door or something for the basement area below the bedroom.

I hope to dream about chocolate tonight.

7 layer cookies
These are Sean’s favorite goodies-7 layer bars. They smell delicious, look delicious and taste delicious! So that’s why I picked them! : ) (graham cracker, melted butter, butterscotch chips, chocolate chips, walnuts or pecans, coconut and sweet condensed milk)

Here’s a recipe for inquiring commenters. I plan to make more of these in the coming days.

Home remedy anyone?

Standard

Now I’m into my 5th day of this virus and Brian got it last night and couldn’t go to work today. Mine is mostly in my throat now (my head feels better), when you get that terrible tickle and almost hack up a lung-for nothing! Sean said he’d go get me the daytime cough medicine as I just took the Dm kind, which is all we had. That helped a bit, but I think the Altoids is shocking it a bit. Anyone have any good home remedies for coughing? And I tried salt water gargle and it ended up all over the mirror in the bathroom. And I’ve taken a few doses of honey too, which is soothing. The Nighttime Tylenol must be drying me out too much as I feel the worst after I’ve been up 1/2 hour or so with the coughing, etc.

Sean is doomed, I feel bad. He is still ok, though. Crossing fingers.

Update~-

Thanks for all your comments. We really appreciate them. I had Sean get a few things at the store from DayQuil to popsicles. My throat was getting sore. Seems I had the bad cough after I ate, so I’m thinking it was a bit reflux. I only did that a few hours after I got up. It seems to be moving down into my chest more. I am feeling a little something rattling around.

Brian’s going to try and get to work tomorrow. He’s at the pounding head stage. He also can’t taste anything. I was so happy that the hair on top of my head and some of my capped teeth didn’t hurt today! No kidding!

Sean rented a few DVDs, one of which was ‘Sicko’ the Michael Moore documentary about the state of the USA’s health insurance. Seems that Canadians and Brits don’t have to pay for anything health related (I guess a lot through taxes)! When Brits need medicine, they only have to pay around $10 for any size prescriptions 10 pills to 300 pills. If you can’t afford to pay, it’s free. No wonder I cried when I found out I didn’t need to have further treatment in December as the bill for the procedure I had was over 6K! We haven’t heard about how much the insurance will pay for most of it. To use the surgical suite for one hour was 4k alone. To be in recovery for less than an hour was $700. The small plastic bandage-$3 and the 2 shots of painkillers-$57 each.

Outrageous.

Awesome Longwood Gardens

Standard

Boy oh boy was it crowded at Longwood Gardens today! We lasted almost 2 hours in the mob, but we mainly went to see the lights, the new children’s garden and the main Christmas display-which we did. My mom is out for a visit and joined us and both Sean and her tried out their new cameras. Here are a few of the 79 shots (wow, I know). I’ll do a slideshow probably tomorrow.

Crash and burn

Standard

We’ve all been sleeping in late over the last few days. Staying up until 1-2 is not good for the breadwinner of the family (he is off this week), and it kind of messes up his schedule.

Yesterday turned out to be a gloomy, rainy day. I did get dressed to go shopping and right after I put my boots on, the heavens opened up! Bri and I ran down to McDonald’s a little later to grab a quick dinner and the woman taking the order sounded so different than the usual people working there. Bri got in two orders and the woman said to ‘check the screen’ for the total and that was that. We got up to the pick-up window and the young man there said the woman was on a phone line taking orders for them from North Dakota! Is that weird or what? I think our McDs has so many people working there that use English as their second language, many of the orders are messed up-it’s happened to us a lot lately. We had to add to the order and then forgot a few things as it was.

It cleared up a bit and Bri took me to Peebles department store around 7:30 and I got a few things for 75% off-a Cardinal bird salt (that I wanted) and pepper set and a matching creamer and sugar.  We went to Big Lots and their stuff was more picked over.

When I got home I finally watched James Taylor’s ‘One Man Band’ DVD-the show Bri and me saw him perform last October at the Tower Theater. It was up close and personal and a nice way to spend an evening.

Sean and I will probably head over to Longwood Gardens in the late afternoon. My pass expires today (I will probably renew it) and of course the Christmas display is still up. They also have a new children’s garden with special effects like steam and hopping streams of water, just to name a few things. I’ve been watching them build it all year.

Have a great rest of the day!

Merry Christmas one and all!

Standard

The big day is finally here-well half over. My pot roasts are in the oven and I decided to take a breather. I wanted to see if my friend Barbara was home from the hospital with her new baby, and she was briefly and had to go back again until his blood levels are normal. He’s a precious baby!

I also wanted to upload some Christmas Eve photos. My nephew was hamming it up last night for us all and most are silly shots. My niece had her hair cut shorter and now has Shirley Temple ringlets-so sweet!

We went out to dinner up the road from my mom first. We sat next to a loud table of about 20 which put a damper on our meal. We couldn’t hardly talk to each other and my mom has had hearing issues for a few years and I almost had to shout to her. I noticed one of the owners came and talked to them (like to see how everything was doing), I bet they were getting complaints. It was like a noisy cafeteria in there instead of a nice restaurant. Mom, Sean and I had lobster tail (mom and I had surf and turf) and Jim had chicken and Brian had flounder. The food is really good!

We headed over to my brother’s and visited for an hour. He really did himself proud with the decorations inside and out. Then we went back to mom’s and we opened gifts. She cried when she saw her HP digital camera and printer bundle. She really wanted something special and I am glad I could make her happy. She is suppose to come here today for dinner.

We went to a beautiful midnight mass service in Delaware. The alter and music were truly divine. We hit the sack about 2 am and I was up with the cat at 8:15 and remembered to do the guy’s stockings at 9 am. I am a bit bushed.

My main gift was an emerald necklace in it’s natural form! It’s cool. I’ll have to have Bri take a photo of it. He saw it in a magazine ad while he was waiting on me when I had my procedure done. He also got me a photo frame that is a slideshow of your digital photos. Neat! Sean got me a Celtic cross stitch book, the Sarah Brightman DVD of her Vegas show, and lovely postcards of Pennsylvania (in a book form).

Sean’s main gift was a HP digital camera and he was totally surprised! Yeah! Bri’s main gift was a West Bend coffee/ cappuccino/espresso ‘station’.

I hope you are having splendid days. OX

Where’s Waldo?

Standard

Where’s Waldo? I mean Sean? He called this afternoon to say he thinks he’ll do better in Stats. Bri asked where he was and he was at ‘The Hub’ the student meeting area. Bri remembered there was a webcam there, so Sean is in the shots below. Can you find him? You may have to double click to make these bigger, but he is seen better in one than the other.

Oh Sean!

Where is Sean?

Blue Sunday

Standard

Sean just left about 10:30 am. It’s his first solo trip up to PSU. He drove down with a friend, but the guy’s mom is driving him back. Tomorrow is the opening of hunting season and we think he should have gotten an earlier start. He said he didn’t get to sleep until 2 am as he was thinking about the trip. Wish him luck.

Barbara at Mainly Stitching sent me the sweetest birthday gifts that arrived yesterday. I love that the mattress style pin cushion was made as a stitch-along with her son (Brightneedles’ Mary Kirby series). I can see the two of them happily stitching away. And Barbara also sent a thougttful ‘Think Pink’ bookmark from Mosey n’ me. A few years ago I met the designer for Mosey n’ me, Frank Bielec as he’s a designer on the TLC cable show ‘Trading Spaces’. Thanks again Barbara!

I shamelessly hijacked her photo as I like how she had them set up on her blog. : )

Gifts from Barbara

So now I’m a little blue as all the ‘fun’ and ‘busy’ stuff is over until after this trying week ahead. I do go to church almost every week and last night the first hymn ‘O Jesus, Our Savior, Our King’ (or something close) had the word ‘benign’ in it. The lector also said ‘don’t just go by medical opinion, go by the word of the Lord’. Around the ceiling are smalls stained glass windows of saints and I ‘talk to’ St. Ruth as that was my grandmom’s name. So I’m feeling some good vibes in a spiritual way this weekend.

Some gifties

Standard

Thanks for all your continued birthday wishes! I really appreciate them! I was gone all day today, so I finally got around to taking a few photos.
Gifts
Thanks first to the two Carol/Caroles I know! The fairy bird feeder/ornament, the Canadian BC awareness angel pin, snowman ornament and teapot night light are from Carole/ Pea from Canada (plus some maple chocolates). I love them all. Carol from NH made me the sweet ‘Stick it here’ pincushion-perfect stitching Carol. Angela from NY made me the little book that holds art trading cards-great idea-I’ll definitely use it!

Cards
I got about 18 birthday cards! Gift from Brian
Brian gave me this to help me draw on the computer.
Today I got a ‘on the house’ hair touch up and cut from my sister-n-law Colleen. I showed my niece Tori my big book of Art trading cards and gave her all of the Wizard of Oz ones I had made. She says she has 5 from me now. We dropped by to see my mom, but she was unable to go shopping with us. She gave me a cross stitch book, candy, a cute teddy bear, a heart pin and some other little things. I told her not to worry about going out in the damp cold, but she does anyway.
Sean and I did some power shopping at Value City and Old Navy. I got a little faux red alligator purse to use for my reunion on Friday. I got a few Liz Claiborne tops, gray and cream (I had birthday money), plus a pale teal color sweater at Old Navy.
Sean and I stopped for dinner at PF Chang’s, a Chinese Bistro. He had honey coated shrimp and I had lemon grass prawns on garlic noodles-really delicious.
When I got home, I found out I had forgotten to pay the mortgage (very unlike me, the bill lady-too much on my mind lately) and Bri and I ran it up to the post office and hit the less crowded grocery store. I so wanted to bake a pecan pie, but the pecans are about $10 a bag. I settled on some store bought pies as the store has a pretty good bakery.

To my Neighborhood Round robin pals-my piece is sitting at the post office! No one was home (it figures) to sign for it, so I’ll run over to get it tomorrow. I thought for sure it would be here yesterday-darn. I’ll get a heap of photos to share. I can’t wait!
