Celine and Elvis

Standard

Hey did you see the American Idol gives back special Wednesday night? Not only was it an important show, but it had the cool ‘performance’ highlighting Celine Dion singing with Elvis (from the year she was born-1968). It was pretty clever. I think it’s available for download on the AI site. While you’re there, give a few bucks to help poor people-it makes a difference. I bought a bunch of the One.org white bracelets last year and Sean was wearing his today.

I had an uneventful day-did some cleaning. Yeah, stop snickering there. I am influenced (though I am not that bad, goodness me) hooked on that BBC America show ‘How Clean is Your House‘ with Kim (the lady with the I Dream of Jeanie hairstyle) and Aggie- who takes swabs of different areas in the dirty houses before they get cleaned. That’s the part I like the best as unfortunately, it scares many of them back into reality. The lady last night had such a dirty frig that Aggie suggested she ‘chuck it’ for a new one. Take the how clean is your house quiz here. I passed, thank goodness! And here are some videos with the ladies’ helpful cleaning hints.

Sean was a good guy this afternoon. He took his mom mom to the doctor so she could get a cortisone shot in her hand-for the second time in a year. She has a painful swelling in her right hand. She can’t get it in her head not to use the hand and I even saw her trying to lift a box at the book sale a few days back. I’m glad Sean was with her.

I forgot to tell you that someone was trying to report my one debit/credit card as lost and the company that issued it closed down my account, though I had to reapply for a new one. I had just gotten the new card and now I have to wait for 2-4 weeks for the replacement. I don’t want to say what company it is on my blog, but you can write to me if you want to know. I believe I used the card months ago in either a Marshall’s or TJ Maxx-one of the stores that had card #s stolen. It had to be one of them as I usually only use the card at the post office. You never know.

And just for fun…

Kitchen anniversary

Standard

One year ago, I was watching my 1960s kitchen cabinets(photos in link) get tossed out into my backyard, along with the sink and oven. I was a little reminiscent of days long gone by, like my baby’s first bath in that sink (given to him in his blue Fisher Price tub by his mom mom) and him standing on a step stool, looking so cute as we dyed Easter eggs together over the years. We did a bunch of messy things out there! But it was time for something new. There were more things on the countertops then inside the cabinets! I had drawn up a plan years before we actually went to the Home Depot for them to help us design the kitchen. I know I wanted light colored cabinets-it’s not a huge kitchen and the honey wood maple or whatever was not to my liking anymore. So I got the ‘fawn glaze’ finish which is an off white with ‘distress’, meaning little boo-boos to make them look older, but not overdone. The plans that were drawn on the computer were very much like the ones I had made up in my head! I wanted a pantry closet, a movable oven and stove combo with the glass top and a separate counter for baking.

I liked that we did some of the finishing-painting, tiling (with glass mosaics that I did) and tin which Bri and I both worked on. I pretty much know where everything is now. When I buy a bunch of groceries, they get ‘put away’ and you can’t tell I was even food shopping. It’s really easier to assemble things for cooking too.

I was just thinking I should give each cabinet a wipe out for their anniversary. I already do that to the bread drawer and pot cabinet frequently, but I think I will do that tomorrow as we are planning to meet Bri’s pal Kathy tonight for dinner. I am praying my sinuses will decompress soon. They started ‘acting up’ last night. Sean and Bri both are having nasal issues too. I was blaming mine on emptying my mom’s bagless vacuum out in the wind a few days ago. Speaking of mom, I so need to get her one of those mats with the stiff bristles for muddy shoes. No way should two people be making that much dirt-they are dragging it in on their shoes-no real sidewalk and Jim walks up and down the stone drive which is more dirt than stones now. When four kids lived there I don’t remember seeing that much. Maybe I just didn’t care or my live-in grandmom kept it cleaned up. I think both!

Bunnies are blushing

Standard

I do like my little bunnies-these are Blushing Bunnies (with other ‘friends’ like kitties and hedgehogs) all out for Easter and Springtime and will probably be there until September. I have some for Christmas cuties too.

Not a fun day as I had a sinus face ache at lunchtime. Taking a Tylenol right away saved me. Of course I’m thinking it’s the faulty heater-carbon monoxide poisoning or something. I bet I don’t sleep well tonight. Thank goodness the hunk of junk is going, but it’s kept us fairly warm all winter.

I got Martha Stewart’s newly released cookbook in the mail today that is based on her Everyday Food magazine which I love. I couldn’t really enjoy it as I was feeling so funky. I did find a recipe that utilized what I had in the frig and took some stuff out and added others. Came up with a grilled chicken and zucchini pesto tortellini dinner. It was good. Trader Joe’s sells the chicken already grilled and that’s my favorite way to eat it.

Bunnies are out!

Mixin’ it up!

Mother nature is playing games with us. We’ve had all kinds of weather from sleet, ice and snow. The snow one time was so fine it was like someone was shaving ice in the sky. We are hoping the power stays on. The furnace is running rough too. Tuesday can only come too soon.

Here are some photos I took around the house today:
I uncovered my pond (took off the netting) only for it to get covered again with ice
Uncovered the pond for it to get covered again.
These were my grandmom’s. My mom gave them to me the other day.

My glass egg collection, many gifts from Brian, so I think he really likes them.

Things are better

I was so glad that my Reiki in training pal said she sent me chakras for over the course of 12 hours yesterday as it was a rough day. I do feel calmer today. Thanks Lisa!

The furnace/heater is going to be cheaper than anticipated. The salesman made a funny remark why we shouldn’t get the super duper model, like our house is only worth so much and not like the houses down in Hockessin (probably 250k and up). I guess he wanted to save us money. The new heater is going in Tuesday if all goes well. They got a deposit today. We have a little more basement cleaning to do. What I did a few days ago shows, so at least having repair is one way of getting that area tidied up.

Mom said I can help her sort stuff after pleading with her again. This time I used Peter Walsh’s approach (professional de-clutterer from The Learning Channel)-you hoard because you may need it some day (that’s me and mom) or for memories sake. You have to get practical when you are in your 70s-hold on to what you really love. Mom didn’t look good at all yesterday and I want her to be happier.

So I am pleased with my eBay sales of late. Seems my books are really popular. The barn sale is on again on the 30-31st, so you know I’ll be there as that’s where I bought the lastest good sales.

I had the cat out for his first walk of the year. He was so curious. He couldn’t believe another creature would leave their droppings in ‘his’ yard-he acted so disgusted.

Well, I am making Bri a nice dinner tonight as he’s been neglected of good eats for a few nights. I’m cooking up some steaks and tators. : )

Always look on the bright side…

Standard

…of life-Monty Python.

I’m having one of those days when the dark side is overpowering the lighter side of our lives.

First I called my mom and the discussion went sour when I mentioned again that she should get rid of half the stuff in her house so she doesn’t have to worry and do things she likes such as draw and watch movies. She doesn’t care to be told this, says she cleans when she can, which is practically never. She doesn’t seem to have trouble shopping though. (I know who I take after, but I don’t shop as much as her, believe me). Said no one helps her and I only talk about myself when I call her. She started crying and hung up on me.

The heater man came before noon and within 5 minutes called me to the basement and said he couldn’t clean the heater as it was shot! It’s like 19 years old and a piece had broken off. We are looking at a big bill for that. I was reeling from that and called my mom back and she said she couldn’t catch her breath right. I think she had herself so worked up and with all the exercise she got last night she did that to herself. She’s ok, I’m going there in a few hours. So the poor man from the heating company thinks I’m completely loony because I heard his voice which sounded like a friend of my son’s who seems to call at all the most inappropriate moments. After my ‘please don’t call this number…blah, blah’ he said he was calling about the heater! Man. The good thing-the warm weather is setting in soon (please). The bad thing-I had to sign a paper that said ‘run at your own risk’. I’m crossing fingers and toes that my van is ok when Ken inspects it tomorrow.

In the meantime…always look on the bright side of life..da…da..dadadadada. : )

Monty Python sings…

Always Look on the Bright Side of Life (from Monty Python)
words and Eric Idle

Some things in life are bad
They can really make you mad
Other things just make you swear and curse.
When you’re chewing on life’s gristle
Don’t grumble, give a whistle
And this’ll help things turn out for the best…

And…always look on the bright side of life…
Always look on the light side of life…

If life seems jolly rotten
There’s something you’ve forgotten
And that’s to laugh and smile and dance and sing.
When you’re feeling in the dumps
Don’t be silly chumps
Just purse your lips and whistle – that’s the thing.

And…always look on the bright side of life…
Always look on the light side of life…

16 children

Standard

On TLC last night the Duggar family special was on about them building their own dream house on 20 acres. 20 acres-so each of the 16 children could have an acre and build a home for themself someday. The dad and the bigger kids did a lot of the work themselves until it got too much and they called in a contractor. But what they did was amazing. Michelle the mom and the only non-J named family member was about to have baby number 16, so they wanted to get it finished.
(The names and ages of the Duggar’s children, and you’ll notice a pattern with their names, are: Joshua, 17; John David, 15; Janna, 15; Jill, 14; Jessa, 12; Jinger, 11; Joseph, 10; Josiah, 9; Joy-Anna, 8; Jeremiah, 6; Jedidiah, 6; Jason, 5; James, 4; Justin, 2; Jackson Levi, 1;Johannah, newborn.)

I think TLC came in and got a designer for them, sponsors, etc. Jim Bob is the dad (why do I think of The Waltons when I hear that name?) and is a real estate person. He must do extremely well. Michelle is the sweetest person. Talk about building a village! They remind me of Mennonites or Mormons, but are Southern Baptists who believe that God opens the womb. The girls wear long dresses and have long hair (mom too). What got me was the family closet. They all store their clothing in one room-bins for ‘dark socks’, etc. Mom has used heavy duty kitchen equipment that is worth $100k that they got for $11k. Mom is also the teacher. I must say all the children are extremely polite. The oldest son narrated the special and did an excellent job.

What have I been doing? Cleaning! I took down my winter snow scene yesterday and replaced it with my glass egg collection. I am having trouble finding Easter stuff. What else is new?

I have a pot of beef stew all set and I have to go mail auction items as tomorrow will be a snowy day-maybe. They say the roads may not get bad. Crossing fingers.

Dust mite or dust mate?

Standard

I stole the title from a webpage as it was just too perfect. Rachael Ray had a lady on today talking about the dust mite. Now she said to replace your bed every 5-7 years because they just get so ‘into’ the mattress, especially loading it with their droppings! Ugh! She also said pillows should be replaced every 1-3 years. She weighed one that was 3 yrs old and compared it to a new one-the old one weighed 8 ounces more.

I thought you should replace your mattress every 10 yrs, which we try to do. Some people never buy a new one! So come on-just imagine all the  dust mite poo you are sleeping on top of!  Ugh! At least enclose your mattress in plastic as that should help.

Having a little fun taking photos to thank my friend for the goodies I purchased from the g.c. she gave me from the Williams Somona catalog (as a Christmas gift). I got the personalized pink apron, the bowl, pink-tipped spatulas and a paring knife.
I had just gotten my hair done today, so that was the motivation for the photo taking. This was touched up a bit in PSP as the flash didn’t go off and it was a bit dark and I added some contrast and a border to it.

I have dark blonde/lt brown hair, so the editing made me look like a red head.
