What’s that all about you may ask? Well, it’s an ad that Brian got for the local paper that made the news (that’s his job anyway)! Brian said that NBC 10 news reporter Deana Durante was in his office today to get a copy of the ad which he gave to her. What happened was that a resident thinks it’s unappropriate, especially with the Nickel Mine Amish shootings of less than a month ago (only 15 miles away). People who read the paper live in a very rural area and hunt. I am all for gun control! It’s kind of a weird promotion. Why not give them a gift card for dinner or something that won’t kill anyone?

I got outside late in the afternoon to dig up the roses. Sean said he would help, but he went to the gym instead. The ground was soft, but digging up the 5 roses was hard. My 19 yr old Queen Elizabeth rose had a long tap root and I had to cut into that. I also dug up about 15 gladiolus, but chopped into two of them, so I have 13 now. I need to put them in a better spot next year or at least keep them supported so they don’t fall over.

I made caramel apples-so easy, but mine are too sticky! I may have kept them in the microwave too long. We’ll eat them anyway. I was thinking about making brittle like Giada DeLorentis made on her show-with dried apricots, toasted almonds and chocolate chips. Does that sound good or what?

Time is a wastin.
But maybe, just maybe, if I had this gnome, I’d get out there and clean up the rest of the ornaments for the year:

Imagine finding this little charmer telling jokes while you gathered your goodies, meaning birdhouses, windchimes, frogs, etc. I would be out there in a second. And where has he been all my gardening life anyway? ; )
Audio pleasures and difficulties
I pulled out the turntable tonight to listen to a record (remember those?) that Brian bought at a booksale and wants to sell. Talk about bringing back memories of my younger days! We both still have large collections-I’d say at least 300 total. A lot of them are in plastic tubs in the basement. The record sounded good, so I popped on another that I had bought and hadn’t listened to. It was a 99¢ one I bought in Doylestown at a record store a few years ago. I’m pretty sure all the Taylor siblings have recordings and this was of James’ late brother Alex. I can surely hear JT in his brother’s voice, the twangy country part that slips out of him once in a while. I feel bad because his brother passed on a few years back and it was a self-induced passing.
I then popped in a cassette and one of the first JT songs was about ‘Alice’, but it was really about ‘Alex’ (well being a big fan, I knew this). Funny that I listened to Alex’s lp and then happened to listen to ‘Hourglass’ that contained that song. I really enjoyed the music for over an hour.
My head has been terrible stopped up, well at least I thought it was. When the weather is chilly and then warms up, I’m in trouble most of the time. My ears were bothering me too, so I put some drops in them-to ‘soften up’ whatever is in there. Now tonight, I am hearing an echo which is strange. I tried to get all the wax medicine out with water. I hope it corrects itself without me having to go to the doctor. I may have cute little shell-shaped ears (that’s from my mom), but they have been troublesome off and on.
Today I decided since it was so nice I’d take a little drive to a local thrift shop. I was disappointed by the high prices and only bought one thing-a pink pressed glass bowl with a lid. When I got home I tackled 8 narcissus bulbs in a little side garden. Thank goodness the ground was soft. I then put some more garden things away. There is so much room in the shed now. Brian should have cleaned it out years ago.
The guys got homemade turkey meatballs and spaghetti for dinner.

Have any good eggplant recipes?

My first eggplant of the season and it ‘was’ almost seedless. I sauteed it in oil and tossed it with tuna in pasta. To back track, I have a space near the metal basement doors that I plant herbs, flowers and a few veggies in. I threw in about 6 eggplants, two peppers and a roma tomato there. It’s nice to go a few feet out the backdoor and grab something from this little patch.
And lookie what I found Eggplant coming out my ears recipes

Think I’ll become a rhizome farmer!!
You know what rhizomes are, don’t you? Sounds biological, but it’s just growing irises-the flower! They don’t have bulbs, they have rhizomes. I was out planting some rhizomes that I purchased on eBay. I was talking to myself (in my head) and I thought, if I could grow all these neat varieties on our acre of land that we don’t really use, I could sell them and make a mint! I paid roughly $3-4 each for them. If I only sold 10 a week, that could be an easy $40!!! It’s definitely something we could think about. I’ll have to Google iris growers/growing. I grew them in the past and they were gorgeous.
I didn’t go to my Mom’s today. She suggested tomorrow, just in case she needs to go to the doctor. She had a rough night last night. I still say she should put calomine lotion on the lesions, but the doctor said not to. I read in a number of places where it is okay. She is popping pain pills like crazy. Damn shingles.
My son the almost lobster…
Will kids ever listen? Sean went to the beach with some friends today. They went down in Ocean City, Maryland about 2.5-3 hours from here. I was putting sunscreen on his linen white back at 7 am. He came home here at 9:30pm all splotchy red and lobster like. I had recommended he keep his shirt on or wrap a towel around himself. I recommended water and snacks. He drank the solo bottle of water he took, but had no snacks and went about 7 hours without eating. Knowing him, he must have been starving! We eat 3 square meals, not 3 fancy squares, but we try to eat every 4-5 hours. I think he had a good time. He needed this so bad. He can learn from his mistakes with the sunscreen and snack packing.
Brian and I hung out today together. He rototilled a half moon around my circle of zinnias and cosmos so I could plant the various bearded iris rhizomes I have and am expecting next month. I miss them so much that I decided to get more and plant them in a place where I can dig them up when they need dividing. Plus they will bloom first and then the flowers seeds will follow.
I sat on the lounge chair and started a new novel! Yeah! It was lent to me by my mom and I opened it up and out fell the directions for the screen house we had so much trouble trying to assembly on the 3rd.
Brian and I went up to Kennett Square and were going to try this one restaurant out and decided on another and then we just got nachos and salads. I had a piece of coconut torte too. I love trying desserts. The food was ok. When we got home, he found a few coupons for the restaurant in a monthly coupon book that we get. We’ll have to try their brunch some Sunday and use the coupon. There was a ‘hot’ waiter in there who looked like a blue-eyed Matt LaBlanc (from friends). If you don’t look you’re dead, ya know? LOL
I’ll probably head off to mom’s in the morning to see what I can do for her. I hope it’s not food shopping.
