Skeeter Heaven

Standard

The insects have all seemed to appear within the last few weeks when it got warmer outside. I didn’t miss them one bit! I spray Off! on me, and they find the spots I missed. And don’t get me started about the weeds. I think I will do a few areas that I see all the time, like when I come out the front door-across from that and let the others go. That garden looks awesome. (I know-where’s the photo). We do need to clean out where the tomatoes were as we have some fall crops to add. I love planting seeds, so that shouldn’t be too difficult. I have some zinnias still coming up from seeds I put in a few weeks ago. I also have nasturtiums sprouting up too- I just poked the little dried ‘peas’ everywhere.
Today I went to the Social Security office with Sean so he could apply for a new card. That and his Birth Certificate went missing. I think back in 2002, they were put in an envelope when we went on the plane to Florida. Remember we had to show ID back then to fly after 9/11? I know they are around here somewhere, but he doesn’t want to dig deeper to look in his closet, etc. He already got a replacement for his B.C. It wasn’t a big deal. Glad I went as the office was stuck in a shopping center where he may have missed.
Our priest came for his bi-annual visit yesterday. He stayed 5 whole minutes. I think he was happy I had him sit in the living room so close to the door! : ) Sean was in the shower and it’s right in the hallway there (we live in a ranch style house) so I could see him when he came out wrapped in a towel-lol. He had just cut the grass. He did run out in his socks (after he got dressed!) to say hello and help Father back out on our busy road.
Here are a few photos of my parlor area:

My little settee. Everytime I think of getting rid of it, I can’t as I thought it was so cute and the Victorian look I wanted. I have a Tiffany style floor lamp next to it I got from mail order. It’s heavy!

I have so many collections! I still have the summer one up on the sofa table in the window. I’m getting in the fall mood though.
Guess it’s off to the store tomorrow. I have a nerve issue or pull in my left shoulder blade. It’s like when one of your fingers goes out of joint. I was sitting on the floor sorting things and I can’t do that. Or I lifted something funny-who knows? Bri is complaining about his back too. Wish we could find a chiro*practor we like and for a reasonable price.

Tidying

Standard

Over the last few days, I have been busy cleaning my living room or ‘parlor’ area. We rarely spend any time in there and I was starting to tuck my craft things in every nook and cranny (mostly in plastic sweater boxes). We are having our biannual visit from Father M. tomorrow and I thought I would sit him at the little settee in front of the fireplace. He can see my decorations and such there instead of making him sit on the hard bench (his choice always) in the family room. I have a few more tweaks to do, and then I’ll take a few photos.
This is something new I bought for fall decor:

It’s an Anna*lee mouse dressed like a scarecrow. I thought it was an Indian in a previous post, but there were little Indians too. He is sitting in a ‘corn husker’ which was marked down to $5. Now this Home*Goods is a great store, but my new tablecloth- Jacquard is a second (you can see it in the photo). I wondered what was wrong with the edge and they had sewn on a piece to make it a complete circle! I should return it as the package wasn’t marked as a second, but it was only $10 and would be more trouble than it’s worth. I’ll turn it to the back and put the plastic back over it.
I have a few pieces of mail to ready for tomorrow. Have a great Sunday!

Show & Tell

Standard

It’s been a few weeks since I participated in Show and Tell. Now I have something to show!
I set up my living room sofa table with a beachy theme for the summer months.
IMG_5651
I started with the metal ‘By The Sea’ sign that I laid out flat and added a vase of seashells, some art work (one by me and a card and an altered tin from friends); some vintage reproductions of local Delaware beaches; that neat terra cotta ball covered with seashells; the little blue life preserver over the blue Ball jar  and a scented candle called ‘Ocean Waters’. I also added a few gardening things as I am a gardener.

And this is new, but looks vintage and sits on the windowsill behind the above table. I just found it in Home*Goods along with the little life preserver.

Tin I found at a flea market, originally uploaded by DianthusMoon.

I asked the guys (hub and son) if they wanted to take a ride down Rt. 1 to Nottingham, PA. which is the home of Herr’s, the potato chip factory. I got Sean to go on the promise that we would go to the gift shop for some ‘fresh’ chips. Lo and behold, the factory was closed on weekends! Across the street is this big ol’ horse barn/turned flea market. Lots of junkie stuff, but I found this gorgeous detailed tin (probably cake or cookies were inside at one time) that I got for about $4 as the lady only charged me $5 for it and an orange carnival glass vase. The vase has some defects-it looks like a crack is in it, but it’s the finish, but I could picture marigolds in it. So that was bounty of that little weekend excursion. : )

Show and Tell-My collection of Pink Glassware

Standard

My collection of Pink Glassware, originally uploaded by DianthusMoon.

This is my collection of pink glassware. I’ve had the pink cup and saucer for many years. I purchased the cake dish from a friend off of eBay. The other items were found at thrift shops or the Goodwill. Does anyone know what the small bowls are for? One has a little handle on it.
I think these all are perfect for Easter and spring. I need to take the snowmen out of the front window now! Come on spring!!

Sewing Ephemera
Above is a display of Cross stitch items-mostly gifts from my dear blogger pals and some sewing things. The box was a gift from my friend Barb in Colorado. It’s a shadowbox with some copies of antique sewing ephemera and some actual things like binding. I found the little silver walnut needle case on eBay.
You can also click on the photos of the right for a better look-sorry some of my mosaic isn’t showing.

The rug

Here’s the rug my father-in-law gave us last week. Cosmo loves it!

And my amaryllis has 4 blooms on it now! I was wondering what to do with the bulbs later on…I know they need to rest, but any secrets to getting them to rebloom or is it a big process? I should ask the people at Longwood.  Speaking of Longwood, I think I’m skipping 20 minutes in the cold for the ice skating. I was waiting for Sean to get back to school and he did about 4:20. He just sounds so thrilled with being there. I had a blah day-blasted hormones!

img_3690This is on the center of my dining room table. I’m still packing away Christmas stuff, so when I get that cleaned up, I’ll show you the entire table! : )

It’s really almost Christmas now

Standard

Yesterday I felt a bit frantic as every cookie recipe I looked at called for something I needed to purchase. Bri and I went on an early evening shopping trip to an almost empty store. They didn’t have unshelled pistachios for a cookie I want to try (recipe from Jennifer) and a few other things. Today I made ‘candy’ (I say that loosely)- Chocolate Cherry Bourbon Balls that my pal Warren said I should try. Brian went for a booze hunt in the basement and came up with a gorgeous bottle of Taylor Kentucky Bourbon. It had a ’68’ on the bottle, and sure enough it was from 1968! Bri did a Google search and found the exact bottle. The little balls are very potent! I don’t know how many anyone will be able to eat without feeling tipsy-lol.

A condensed ‘I recommend’-
What made my day was finding a recipe for Peanut Butter Pinwheels which has to be the exact recipe from one of Peg Bracken’s ‘I hate to cook’ books. I made them as a teen and loved making them, smelling them baking and eating them! I made some and the following are photos of the rolled up peanut butter dough with the melted chocolate inside, to the finished product. I may bake a batch of easy peasy 7 layer cookies when I finish here-all in one pan-and finish up the rest tomorrow.

    Making Peanut Butter Pinwheels

Recipe for
Peanut Butter Pinwheels-
Taste of Home-Best & Loved Cookies and Bars (there is a new edition every year it seems-I only have last year’s issue which I recommend)
Sent in by Kandy Dick
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg
2 Tablespoons milk
1 1/4 cups All-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup (6 oz) semisweet chocolate chips
In a mixing bowl, cream shortening, peanut butter and sugar. Beat in egg, and milk. Combine the flour, baking soda and salt; add to the creamed mixture.
Roll out dough between wax paper into a 12″ x 10″ rectangle (I think it could be a wee bit bigger). Melt chocolate chips; cool slightly. Spread over dough to within 1/2 inch of the edges. Roll up tightly, jelly roll style, starting with long side; wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 20-30 minutes or until easy to handle.

Unwrap dough and cut into 1/2 inch slices. Place 1 inch apart on greased baking sheets. Bake at 375 for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are lightly browned. Remove to wire racks to cool. Yield about 4 dozen.

Brian took some outdoor shots-we need to get the tripod out, but here’s an what it looks like:

The bluish lights are LEDs that I had on the Christmas tree a few years ago. They are very energy efficient.

Boo Mama’s 2008 Christmas Tour of Homes

Standard

I think this is my third year participating in this fun event-what a great idea and thanks Boo Mama! What’s neat is that I will surely add more photos as I get things the way I want them. We haven’t really decorated too much outside, I’m hoping Sean will help with that on Tuesday.
The slide show should load quickly and if you mouse over the photo, it tells you about the photo. Enjoy and please leave me a comment-I love comments!

Here’s last year’s slideshow too!
