MySpace

Standard

I was watching My Name is Earl last night-I think it’s pretty comical. At the end of the show they said if you wanted your chance to be the sombero wearing person on the closing credits, you have to go to MySpace and make Earl your friend. I never turn down a chance to be on tv-though I stand a bat’s chance in heck to be chosen, but you never know. So I joined. Sean’s an old pro and helped me set up my account and background, etc. I even have singer James Taylor (or whoever does his webstuff) as a friend. I feel a bit old there. I got an invite to an event which turned out to be the naked bottom of a lady-haha. I won’t be opening any more emails from them. Another person asked me if I was ‘bi’. Hey sister, read my blasted profile. Do I look bi to you? Anyway, I feel it’s not as much fun as blogger and tribe, but since I like musicians, etc. you can check out their profiles for their latest info. I just found out that JT is coming to a Philly suburb next month-maybe we can go. If you are on MySpace already, I’ll be your pal.
It’s a wet, cool 1st of September. I made beef stew with garlic cheese biscuits-a good meal for today. I think the weekend is a wash-out so far. I can always find something to do! I’m not one to twiddle my thumbs. : ) Have a good one!

Trying again…on many levels

Standard

I was at the store yesterday buying food items from a 5 day diet plan that sounded good. Lots of grains and fiber to fill you up. We had salmon with bread stuffing, broccoli and even rice (I should have gotten brown and we had white) for dinner last night. I had a few small snacks way after dinner, a few honey wheat pretzel sticks and a Stella Doro cookie.
Brian is a constant snacker. He eats too fast and won’t listen to Sean and me to slow down (you know that it takes your brain 20 minutes to realize you’ve eaten). His tummy is big and rock hard. I mentioned a diet aid pill and he told me to take it. I think he’s a nervous wreck, you can tell by looking at his fingernails as they are all nibbled down. Probably having a father in his 80s doesn’t help and worrying about his future.
Another thing I want to do is try ‘Curves’. There’s a sign for a free month, but I wonder how many months you have to commit to first? All the gardening and sweating I did this summer and my weight didn’t budge. I also had a sick mom and when I am stressed I eat more.
After lunch, I plan to list a few things on eBay. I haven’t really felt like doing eBay lately though I have a huge table full of things gathering dust. I rarely make that great of a profit. I think it’s too popular now (really has been for a while). I remember when I first started, I’d sell at least 15 things a week.
I tried to call my friend in Alabama and her phone just rang and rang. She is up near Birmingham. My other friend from Mississippi sent us all an email and said she moved the family to Panama City, FL. From what I saw, PC didn’t fair well either. That’s where the loan company is that we just sent the promissory note to. It’s going to be a long few months for the people down south. I would definitely go to this site and donate a little something. I plan to do that too.

Eggplant parmigiana

Standard

After the priest dropped by for his bi-annual visitation, I got busy and made eggplant parmigiana from scratch. Sean had just picked an eggplant for me and I thought I had another one in the frig, but I waited to long to use it and had to toss it. The newly picked one was enough to fill the entire toaster oven pan. I made some tortellinis to go with it. It came out pretty good, esp with all the fresh basil added to the top. I should have taken a photo of it! I never hardly ate eggplants until a few years ago. I think my grandmom would overcook them and they got stringy and mushy. Mine weren’t that way at all tonight. The guys even went for seconds.
There was a big stink over Sean’s loan for school. Seems it hasn’t gone through yet because we sent the loan company ‘maybe’ the incorrect form. I finally found the ‘maybe’ correct form through trial and error and tried to fill it out online. When it got to the page that said ‘chose lender’, it wasn’t on the list! So now I have to give them a call and tell them. I got financial aid and loans and never had so much of a hassle. I am thinking that the ‘maybe’ correct form hasn’t been processed yet as it was only mailed the 23rd of this month. Sean will have to get his books ‘out of pocket’ until he gets his money. His algebra book ‘used’ is about $77! Are they kidding? Glad I am finished school.

Have any good eggplant recipes?

Standard

My first eggplant of the season and it ‘was’ almost seedless. I sauteed it in oil and tossed it with tuna in pasta. To back track, I have a space near the metal basement doors that I plant herbs, flowers and a few veggies in. I threw in about 6 eggplants, two peppers and a roma tomato there. It’s nice to go a few feet out the backdoor and grab something from this little patch. Posted by Picasa
And lookie what I found Eggplant coming out my ears recipes

Funky Memorial Day

Standard

Ever have one of those days that just happen to be a ‘holiday’ and you don’t feel like ‘getting into at least part of the celebration? Sean did-in a way. He went up to the next town’s parade and took some photos. I stuck some flags around. Brian char-cooked and ruined the meat we had for dinner. And it was the second time he had cooked this cut of meat that way. Like we didn’t learn from the first time not to cook it on the grill. I actually wanted burgers but he had defrosted the meat and that was that. Before the grilling disaster, Sean and I ran down to the mall so he could get some dress pants. He needed a larger size then the ones he had and he picked out some nice navy blue ones. He is going to the Senior dinner dance on 6/3. We also had to get a battery for the cordless phone and my digital camera at good ol’ Radio Shack. The phone battery was the wrong one, so I have to take it back. I checked out this one department store’s outdoor plant area and nabbed some 4-packs of flowers for about 95¢ each. I needed some more portulaca (finally got that spelling correct) and I got some pretty salvia-a dark purple and burgundy. Sean used all my celosia, so I bought some more of that too.
On the way home we stopped in Walmart so Sean could apply for a job on their in store computer. He has no previous job experience so he just put in the volunteer work that he did for his graduation project. He had helped out at a nature center in Delaware last summer.
I really was in the mood to do some flower planting before it rained. It’s been like this for the last three days. It’s nice, it gets dark and cooler and then in the late afternoon it rains. I managed to repot my geraniums and pot up some planters for the front step. I used mainly fancy coleus, salvia and a few other trailing plants. The planters I used didn’t have drainage last year and the potting soil got muddy. Brian poked some holes in them this year. I don’t think the same thing will happen this year as they are planted very tightly with the new plants. I’ll post a photo soon.
The cat pooed on me this evening as the last straw for such a weird day. He jumped on me, I was snuggling with him and felt ‘wet’ on my t-shirt. There were little brown spots on me and it wasn’t vomit. Cossy was embarrassed. Tomorrow has just got to get better!

Beef stew

Standard

I have to admit, this was the best I’ve made in a while. I make stew at least twice a month in the cooler weather. No way was I going to make it in 80 degree weather yesterday. It was in the 60s today, so I made it. I swear, the turnips and parsnips make the world of different flavor-wise. I like a bit of rosemary and parsley with a splash of Worchestershire sauce. I made some ‘packaged’ lemon squares for a treat. My son Sean has a terrible sweet tooth. He’s practically eaten 4 packages of cookies in less than a week. Half the tray of lemon squares are gone too. And look ma, no cavities and he’s ‘just right’ with his build.
~~~~~~~~
I did weed whacking instead of food shopping. I have a lot of pent up anger in me from my phone conversation with mom. I did almost the entire front yard! Mom even involved my uncle in this spat. He called and was very cool with me. I don’t know when all this will end, but I really hate it because I feel like a heel and I don’t want not to like myself when I didn’t really do anything so horrific.
Silent treatment
Standard
Oh how I hate silent treatments. My mom is giving me one now. She was mad at me for making fun of a shirt she bought for Brian at the Goodwill. Now I don’t know what possessed her to buy this shirt as it is at least from the 80s with a fitted waistband for him and it’s faded. Brian just had a birthday and got new shirts. Mom hung up on me last night and said she’d never buy us another thing (promise?). My brother has her all stirred up because he wants her to get her house cleaned up and in shape. She’s hoarded so much. She was going through bedsheets and I saw a fitted sheet in the pile that I used as a teenager, so that was 25+ yrs old.
I am curious to see how long she can hold out. I love her, but man, I don’t miss the complaining and all.
Update 4-21
I’m not going to do another long post about this. I tried to make amends with mom to no avail this morning. It turned into a shouting match. All the stuff I was thinking about that was negative concerning her boiled over. Mom said that maybe we shouldn’t call each other anymore. Told me my family was dysfunctional(not sure what she means). I almost threw the phone and was in tears. She just tried to call about 45 minutes later and I didn’t answer. We need more of a break from one another. Family issues suck.
~~~~~
For dinner tonight we had chicken tenders spread with a mixture of mayo and parmesan cheese. On top of that you shake on some bread crumbs. You bake it for about 20 minutes at 425. I cooked them in the toaster oven and put the broiler on them to make them nice and brown. I went to a produce place looking for broccoli rabe (which they didn’t have) and got some ‘homegrown in our town’ spinach. Sean likes it raw, so I saved him some. I followed a recipe on the bag-heat olive oil, brown some garlic in it. Take the pan off the heat, drop in the bag of spinach. Put a lid on the pan and cook for 6 minutes. Add lemon juice. I threw in some cooked bacon and it was so tasty. Try it as it’s so good for you too.

Winter wonderland or PITA nor’easter?

Standard

A little of both I think? Sean’s school was cancelled and it didn’t start really snowing until late morning. Brian came home a bit early, but said the worst roads were around here.We don’t know what’s happening tomorrow, but with all the back roads we have, I doubt he’ll go in again. It was like a blizzard tonight.

I am really pooped from yesterday. It was a nice day and so good to do and see something different. Today Sean vacuumed for me and I made him apple streusel muffins and beef stew. We had stopped at a specialty food store last night so I could get some dinner food. Their beef was definitely better. I have been adding parsnips and turnips and the stew is so tasty.

Before grabbing the food, we had grabbed some dinner (we had to wait) at Ruby’s Diner a new place in the same shopping center. It’s mostly a burger place, but it has the decor of an old diner and the waitresses are dressed in cute red striped uniforms and the little hats. I had a turkey club on a French style roll with fat slices of turkey, bacon and avocado. Sean had shrimp tacos and Brian had a burger.

I watched the Oscar’s last night, mainly to see if Jamie Foxx would win for ‘Ray’ and he did! His speech was excellent. JF trivia-his real name is Eric Bishop.
Beyonce (has the same maiden name as me) Knowles was beautiful both in voice and dress and looks! Very nice that she sang three songs, but what about the Spanish one that won? I was pulling for ‘I Believe’. Frank Bielec said that celebrities are so ‘not real’ with their thin bodies, expensive jewels and gowns that they don’t own and I tend to agree. We need more real people like Hillary Swank who remembers about her struggle as a young teen in a trailer park.

So I watched the end of ‘The Bachelorette’ and Jen didn’t pick anyone! I wasn’t really surprised as she had such a hard time picking out the ring and dress and bawling her head off to her friends. Why did she do this show so soon after her breakup with Andrew Firestone? I think she is pining for him or doesn’t want to get hurt again. I liked Jerry, he looked like a guy I liked in high school-hey Michael B!!! Hope Jen finds love. If she couldn’t find it in 26 men, she may be a hopeless case. Sorry to say that.

Turkey hotline….from the BBC

Standard

My turkey came out nice and tender thanks to an oven bag. I talked about these bags in another post about the perfect roast. I also cook my stuffing separately.
I am pooped, but here is something my husband found to use on my blog.

The talk-line’s director, Mary Clingman, says she once had to console a woman who had tried to use her bathroom sink to wash her turkey, which had slipped from her grasp and landed in the toilet.
(Did she really have to call the hotline? Would you eat a turkey that got dunked in the john?)

I always learn the hard way…

Standard

Did you know that Haagen Dazs makes a great laxative? What a nice way to start a post, but man did I ask for it. I had bought the 2 flavors of ice cream (Creme Brulee and Rocky Road) for my birthday and then Brian got the ice cream cake so it was sitting in the freezer all lonesome looking, not being opened, not even by my sneaky guys. I did a peek and taste after lunch yesterday and Cosmo helped by licking the spoon. Then we had a good dinner-chicken breast stuffed with ricotta and spinach, Italian green beans and wild rice. I thought I would have a treat for dessert. I hardly eat any ice cream. Well I felt really hungry at around 7 am this morning and I got a oatmeal bar and went back to sleep. When I got up I felt strange and then my stomach started doing a dance and I went-uh-oh-please calm down before the dentist appt. at 1:30! I have stuff to mail and then cleaning later. Too much for one person. I don’t mind cooking the turkey, it’s all the prep work that needs to be addressed. The guys say they will help and I am lucky if they run the vacuum and wipe down the sink and toilet. My kitchen is a mess, so that’s what I’ll be working on today. In past years I have switched the dining table (it’s a small round one) to in front of the fireplace in the living room where my love seat is, but I think I’ll just move it over a bit this year. My mom isn’t sure if she’ll feel up to driving out, so if she doesn’t I’ll have the three of us and my father-in-law who hasn’t driven here since July. I told Brian he should take his dad a plate because of the above. We’ll see.
