Thursday Thunks

Standard

Want to play along?
1. You are driving down the road and there is a puddle in the road. A big puddle. Not one that will really wreck your car or anything, but a big puddle. There is no other cars in front of you or behind you – do you drive through the puddle or drive around it?
I recently had to go through a puddle which turned out to be somewhat of a ditch and didn’t it give me a flat tire the next morning-so I wouldn’t chance it again-so I’d drive around it.
2. Go to Google Images, type in any word that comes to mind and post the 1st picture you see.
bleeding-heart
This is on my calendar-gave me the idea. Photo from How stuff works.com
3. A college calls you up and says that you have been selected to take get any degree that you want on their dollar…. what do you choose?
Either Culinary Arts or Graphic Arts
4. Are you blogging on a laptop or desktop?
Desktop
5. Which store, excluding a grocery store, do you shop at most often?
Wally World
6. My daughters tried out for the school musical last night. Were you ever in a school play/musical? Which one?
I tried out for the junior variety show, but my audition for following moves was not good. I was an usher for our show Mame. I never took any dance lessons, but heck, I can sing soprano!
7. I read yesterday that a school PTA group wants to try to ban white bread, cakes, brownies or any other “treat” from their lunch menus… plus make kids’ lunchboxes brought from home not include any “junk food”. Thoughts on that one?
It would never work. Taking Tastykakes away from a Philadelphian, for instance, would be considered a felony! What’s wrong with bread-there are lots of good breads too. And what about sneaking veggies in brownies like Jessica Seinfeld does?
8. How many people can your kitchen table seat?
I don’t have a kitchen table-but I think only 4 comfortably can fit around the round dining room table.
9. What time is it right now?
12:22 am
10. Walk out the front door of your house/apartment, turn right, walk 2 blocks. What do you see?
A one lane bridge, a stream and a bit of a meadow.

My New Year’s gift to you

I received some items from the Breast Cancer site and decided I’d like to send one to one of my blog readers as a gift when the new year rolls around.
lllgift
You will receive the one with the silver tone necklace.
If you are interested in trying to win, please leave me a comment here and I will randomly choose a winner on New Year’s day and mail off your lovely ‘Live, Laugh and Love’ necklace shortly after. I wore mine today and it’s cool! : )
Good luck!

I’ve been tagged!

Standard

Sherry over at ‘If I could set myself free’ tagged me for this. I think I tell mostly about myself on my ‘Me’ page, so this may be hard.
# 1 These are the rules for this meme:
# 2  Link to the person who tagged you.
# 3 Post the rules on your blog.
# 4 Write six random things/unspectacular quirks about yourself.
# 5  Tag six people at the end of your post and link to them.
# 6 Let each person you have tagged know by leaving a comment on their blog.
# 7 Let the tagger know when your entry is posted.

#1 All three of us, my husband, son and I had blonde hair when we were little. Bri had platinum blonde, Sean light blonde and me wheat blonde.

#2 I have my high school crush as a friend on Face Book. I’m sure he knows this, but I appreciate him accepting my invite. ; )

#3 Although I got ‘D’s in high school typing on those lovely manual typewriters, I can type great now thanks to using the computer keyboard since 1994.

#4 When we went to Orlando 3.5 yrs ago, I saw a tv guy heading for the outgoing flights (we had just landed) and I had a little conversation with him. If you are from Philly and watch Action News, you probably have heard of Don Polec. That is extremely brave for someone who use to be really shy.

#5 I met Brian at the wedding of my brother to his first cousin-like a soap opera! Everyone saw us chatting at MaryAnne’s mom’s house and almost clapped when Bri asked-do you want to go out sometime? My grandmom told him I was a ‘good cook’, like that would help. ; )

#6 My mom, older brother and I are the only left-handed people in 3 generations.

I tag: Carole, Jennifer, Lee, Barbara, Sharon and Tootie. Good luck ladies!

Show & Tell #12

Standard

Lily slate I designed, originally uploaded by DianthusMoon.

This is hanging in our family room.

Several years ago, I use to stencil ‘Welcome’ signs on slates for a local businesswoman. I think I did at least 300 of them using store bought stencils of her choosing. Linda would let us buy a few from her for our own stenciling. This lily one was made over 12 years ago. It’s a layered stencil, meaning the leaves are a stencil that are put down first and other layers are added. I should say, all the slates got a coat of the ecru acrylic paint first. We were told to follow the natural edges of the slate, which I did here. This is an okay design for someone who never made a stencil before, let alone a layered one. My inspiration was an old botany book (gee, wonder where that is?) I only made a few more as gifts and then turned my attention to cross stitch. I won’t tell you how the lady closed down her business-well I should-so you never do it-hold a meeting to insult people’s stenciling and then close down! She did it to mine-I had added a spray of foam to waves in the ocean and made seashells a bit pinker. That’s me and they looked fine. Plus I had done 100s of them already! She made another stencil lady cry (the poor thing couldn’t even copy or blend well, but she really tried). One stencil lady, who followed the stencils to a ‘t’ got kudos. She also spent way too much time on them for what she got paid-IMHO.Let’s say she was a good copier.

It’s really not too hard to do and if you ever try it, make the design your own with your own special touches! : )

If anyone would like to read ‘The Secret Lives of Bees’, which is coming out in movie form soon, I have a copy I just finished. Let me know.

I have Scrambilitis!

I had one of those nights where I was looking at the clock every hour and getting up. I couldn’t figure out if it was something I ate or drank-I did have that McD’s sweet tea earlier in the day and green tea for dinner. Then it dawned on me that I sat on the floor after dinner for about 45 minutes sorting out my paper goods. I can’t do this anymore, I did it anyway and I’m sure that’s why I felt funky-that and PMS. And it doesn’t get better as you get closer to 50, it gets really strange and you wonder what is inhabited in your body sometime. Anyway, all night, thanks to Facebook’s Scramble (I have a word IQ of between 99 and 101) I was doing words in my head-ten-tent-taint-faint far-fare….you get the picture. Ugha! That was awful. So I couldn’t turn my brain off. Maybe walking around the Mushroom Festival would have helped, but I decided not to go.

I’m thinking a lot about my mom and FIL too. Mom’s a little snippy. I was coming down tomorrow so Colleen can do my hair, but my brother’s friend lost his mom last week and they are going to the funeral. (the lady felt like she had heartburn for 3 days, but she also weighed over 250, but none the less, that is scary stuff). I said to mom that while she was having her eye surgery, I’d run to get my hair done first. She’s only 5 miles away at the hospital and she said she’ll be there 3-4 hours anyway from 9:30 (when the surgery is suppose to take place). I know they are never on time from my experience with the biopsy last November. So mom said I’d have to call the short procedure to see if she was ready to go home, in a snippy way. I think it will work out.

Not sure what I’m doing today-need to wake up!

Here’s what I did on Saturday, inside during all the rain:

I added some fall garland, leaf candles and some aluminum pieces I had. My mom gave me the little Holly Hobbie recently. I also had bought the candle in front of the mantel clock and was trying to figure out where it would look nice. I love those mosaic pieces I found on deep discount at Value City a few years ago. There’s a string of 5 flickering lanterns that don’t show up well here.

Thanks for everyone who offered help with chosing a tv. It sure isn’t an easy task!

And Jennifer and whoever may have signed up for the J. Holdsworthy meeting at the SS, I signed up too! Yeah!

Late Summer Longwood Gardens 2008

Standard

I did get over to LG for about 1 hour. It’s a little hike to the Italian Water Gardens, my focus here. I didn’t even go to the Idea Garden or Conservatory. I’m going to try and go once a week for the exercise. A week ago, I was at the top of the lighthouse in Atlantic City! Even though I’m hurting some, I think continuing this will be worthwhile and I’ll have more energy.
I saw lots of bees, not one big butterfly. I had to come home to see them. Saw a bride and groom when I was leaving. I think they were just putting on their wedding outfits to get their photos taken.
Came home and made a almost from scratch roast beef dinner (used instant potatoes).

I want to give a shout out to local young lady Amanda McGrory who will be going for the gold medal in racing at the US ParaOlympics. She was featured on the local news station last night as someone who has made a difference in sports-a ‘game changer’-video here. Amanda use to go to school with Sean (elementary) and was in the CCD class Bri and I helped with many years ago. She is a lovely, bubbly person.

Just got finished watching Hillary Clinton’s speech at the convention. I still wish it was her, but that’s the way it goes. She is so articulate and shows how intelligent she is. Funny to see Bill getting all misty-eyed. Her experience really showed. I like Michelle Obama, but Hillary is the seasoned politician. I know that Michelle isn’t a policitian, but she can surely learn a thing or two from Hillary.

Off to the dentist tomorrow-again. Am getting fed up. They did x-rays on Brian a few weeks ago knowing that he was on his 2nd visit of the year and that he had had a filling-so no insurance money left and us in the hole again. I purposely didn’t have x-rays my second time, nor did Sean. I’m surprised Bri did.

Atlantic City & attractions 2008

Standard

Here’s a mosaic from our trip-view the large one at the above link or go to the slideshow of the set here. Unfortunately, some of the photos were cut off a bit. Sunday-we basically just stayed around the hotel and went to the mall for dinner. Monday we went to the beach after having the hotel’s breakfast buffet. While we were on the beach, we heard the roar of planes coming very close, almost like one was going to crash in the ocean! Here is was the USAF Thunderbirds flying team practicing for their show today. It was neat at first, but after 45 minutes, it was a bit loud. That night we went to the outlet shops near by and bought a few clothes items (that’s basically all there was). Sean bought me a candle as he was getting a bit short with me about things. I couldn’t help it if ‘Aunt Flo’ decided to visit me during the trip. To prove that I could do it, I climbed the Absecon lighthouse as described below-ouch! The front of my thighs are complaining! After we left there, we headed to Margate where Lucy the Elephant is located. It’s over 100 years and a mascot for the area. You can go up in her, but I just couldn’t do the climbing again. We found a excellent deli (Downbeach) and we all loved what we had-mom said it was the best pastrami she has had for a long time. We decided to stop at Smithville, a quaint little shopping area on the way home. We hadn’t been there for a while, and it doesn’t change much. I bought a tiny hummingbird feeder from a store that sold all bird related things (that’s what they basically were-all Ireland, all angels, etc). to put in the window where my craft table is.

I haven’t felt that tired for a long time when we got home and it took me a few hours to fall asleep, but I stayed asleep for a solid 4-5 hours which is good for me. Mom or I haven’t done that kind of walking for ages. I’m really happy that she did so well in that aspect. Sleeping there was another story.

Oh, and Cosmo was glad to see us and not too stand-offish. He seems really tired, I guess he was pining after me!

A desk with a view

Standard

This was all yesterday:

Since Bri and I were flying solo (Sean made a day trip to a Delaware Beach), we got moving on my craft area. I’m not saying everything is honky dorie yet, but things are in place. It has a great view of the overgrown butterfly bush and the butterflies that have been visiting there. Lots of dust and sorting. Uggha. So my ‘antique’ Shaker desk is now under my dining room window. It’s painted a funky blue-will have to do something with the paint. It’s ‘sister’ desk was stripped somewhat by me and use to hold the microwave in the kitchen. We made the switcher-roo between the blue and the wood (blue was in the guest room, the wood in the basement). We had to put our teak tea cart in the basement for now-hated to, no room up here. I may offer it to a family member, but it’s not in the best of shape. May end up getting rid of it in the long run. It served it’s purpose. Just taking all the crap stuff off the dining room table and moving it to the desk a big difference. That’s my plan. I really need a super cute storage unit with drawers. The plastic boxes look ugly. When I get it a bit more tidied up, I’ll post a photo.

Sean got home around 7-it was really crowded down in Delaware. They tried Rehoboth first, no parking whatsoever-ended up down the road in Dewey. I was glad to have found a coupon for buy one, get one free at a popular pizza place down there for $10. Mentally I’m taking the $10 of the price of the $35 coupon book. I usually get my money’s worth out of it. : ) Sean has sunburn only on one upper arm. It was probably the way he was sitting on the beach. We go to Atlantic City in a week. Just saw where a guy fell off the escalator where we will be staying (he was sitting on the arm and got killed-geez).

I hope you got to see the opening ceremony of the Olympics-what a techno fabulous show! My mom called me to see if I had it on as she was so impressed by it all. Terrible about the Americans hurt (killed) there.

Sorry to hear about the passing of Bernie Mac-just his facial expressions made you laugh.

Better go to bed soon as we need to go to church tomorrow. I hope my sinuses will forgive me for all the dust I inhaled today.

One of my latest creations-she’s eating glitter-opps:
Hope ATC

Don’t the jewels look real-they’re stickers! The lady is from a Victorian inspired catalog. The painting they offer of her is called a ‘yard long’ as she’s 36″ long. I wanted to try some new rubber stamps too.
