The weatherman all say ‘El Nino’. It was so weird to open the front door on Jan. 6th and have it feel like May outside with almost 70 degree temps. The Mummers got to strut their stuff down on Broad Street near City Hill in Philly after not being able to last weekend. We don’t go to the parade, but got to watch it a bit on tv. A friend in Philly said her three kids were suppose to be in the first part of it with the comic division and I hope they did! I was getting a kick out of seeing news reporter Vince DeMentri trying on all the Captain’s fancy hats.
Vince and me at a Tech show where NBC10 was a sponsor back in Nov 03 (I darkened this as my makeup was so pale next to his tan complexion, my hair isn’t black!). He and his coworkers were all very nice.

We were taking down Christmas stuff today. Brian did the lights outside and I did the things in the family room. The tree is still up and will slowly come down this week coming up. I’m not rushing anything. : )
For a change I pulled out some yarn and a crochet hook. I was originally going to crochet some Mary Jane slippers for Tori my niece, but the directions were for women size feet. So I made one and it fits me. I’ll have to make the other one and than adjust to a little girl’s foot. I’ll also have to get more of the ruby color so they will remind her of Dorothy’s ruby slippers from ‘The Wizard of Oz’, my original intention. I should get some yarn with sparkles through it!

An Inconvenient Truth
Now that another new year is under way, I want to tell you all to rent the documentary DVD by former VP Al Gore. It’s really important because global warning isn’t going to go away but only get worse. Just look at the weather we are having. It’s in the 50s in January here! Hurricane Katrina was a result of global warming. In fact the earth hasn’t been this warm in 650,000 years and is only getting warmer! If Greenland ‘goes away’ many places will be flooded out. I didn’t like the fact that the Netherlands was used in two incidences-the Greenland problem and in an example of insects that hatch too soon and the birds can’t feed their young (as I have friends who live there).
What can we do? Rally for environmentally safe vehicles for one thing. The future is in our hands!

I mentioned the above on MySpace and you can add a link to Amazon to buy the documentary. Over 300 people there gave high praise to it! Someone said people got up and applauded at the end of it in the theater.

The yard late November
There’s still leaves to be raked up! This in the front yard under the dogwood tree. It was about 60 today, so I raked up various piles around the yard. I can’t pick them up, but raking them in nice piles isn’t too bad (I make great piles of papers and books too!)
This is awesome grass. All those pretty fuzzy things are seeds and once they root, they are hard to dig up.
And my biggest surprise-Calendula (I think) still blooming! (It’s in a black plastic pot with a black handle).
Wet leaves
Wow it poured this morning! Wet leaves everywhere! I walked around to get some fresh air and got wet feet and came back in again.
I am feeling somewhat better. My tummy only spasmed when I sneezed, so I must have really pulled that muscle there. What a great time to have that when I have stuff to put away and roses to move. I may enlist Sean to do that on Monday. There’s only about 5 roses as it is. I am hoping the new location will make them bloom again. I love roses but they don’t love where we live.
About 5 am I heard a ‘beep’ ‘beep’ ‘beep’ somewhere in the house. I couldn’t place it. Finally at 8:15 I could stand it no more (it was beeping every few minutes). I went down the basement and stood there-nope, not down there. Here it was a weather clock in the dining room window set on alarm…and no one said they touched it! Spooky-definitely Halloween is around the corner!
Have a great weekend!
Brother Don hit hard in Florida
So I’m talking about crocheting and all while my brother Don is living in chaos down in suburban Fort Lauderdale. Wilma hit them good. He hasn’t had power since Monday. Today he ran out of gas. Thank goodness our Mom sent him a little money in the mail as he was down to his last $4. Everything is on a cash basis too as the gas pumps are all electronic now. Why didn’t they at least have a ‘manual’ pump somewhere where hurricanes can strike several times a year? Dumb and dumber. Don says it’s like a third world country with no traffic lights. Wish he would pack up and move north again.
Even the webmistress who runs ‘Make A Child Smile’ said there will be no kids for November. She was driving around (lives near where Don works) trying to pick up an internet connection on her laptop to write her message above.
I wish them and all the people without power, food and money some relief soon.

It’s really quiet here today. I do miss Mom. I forgot to mention she probably needs a hearing aide too. She’s fine talking to you when you are sitting right next to her, but move 10 feet away and it’s a yelling match. I guess that’s another thing to do soon. I’ll see her again on Monday when we stop by my brother’s on Halloween.

Could it be rain?
It hasn’t rained in this area for almost 3 weeks. It was a pollen enhanced dust bowl around here to say the least. I tried to get my gardening done, but I just couldn’t get the shovel that deep into the ground without it causing discomfort. Now I can get the weeding and planting finished in a few days.

My dear friend Karin just lost her beloved grandmother. I am so upset right now. The poor lady just had an operation which proved too much for her frail body. She got an infection and even the antibiotics didn’t help. I lost my grandmom almost 5 yrs ago and it still hurts. Karin and I really thought of our grandmoms as ‘second’ moms.
Update:
My nephew does have Crohn’s Disease and we are all upset over that. I hope the meds they try will help him.
Mom’s bloodwork was good! She is waiting to hear about an x-ray of her ribs as she is hurting near her liver area. She is finally going to get her eyes checked too.
I used an ice pack off and on all day yesterday on my sore elbow and it helped! Something so simply and I didn’t think to keep it in place with my ace bandage before.
Sean got his progress report and he has all ‘A’s and one ‘B’. He had trouble with the class placement exam for Penn State and we are going to the Learning Center next week to talk to the lady about a ‘tracking’ program-whatever that is. It’s not special classes, etc. I called the woman yesterday to let her know about how well Sean is doing in school, he’s just a poor test taker, especially when he can’t prepare for the test. She said kids have trouble moving from high school to college. I don’t know why she said that, their test was designed for rocket scientists it was so difficult.
Flooded!
Flooded Bucks County
One of my favorite spots in Pennsylvania is getting flooded for the second time in 7 months. They showed the Bucks County playhouse half under water. Main street in New Hope was a river. I’m sure the quaint inn that Brian and I stayed in back in 1999 was damaged as it is right on the banks of the Delaware River. Brian said he thinks that housing developments are causing the flooding. That may be one reason and they showed a nice looking condo type place surrounded by moving water. Many of these people just cleaned up from Sept. 2004 and some haven’t even received their federal relief yet. They will probably declare it a disaster zone so they can get more relief.
This is where Terri Schaivo is suppose to be buried. Just wonder if it’s on higher ground away from the Delaware River.
The clean up begins….and a unexpected phone call
Yes, you did feel the earth move today!! We were out cleaning out the flowerbeds of leaves and twigs today as it was nice and around 60 degrees. I got both fellas to help me in a few places. I wish one of them would blow the leaves out of the beds in the autumn. It would make a lot less work in the spring. I was around all those damp leaves and mold and so far the only reaction I’ve had was after dinner when I sneezed about 6 times in a row. There’s a ton more to do, the little pond is loaded with leaves on the bottom. I’m wondering if I have any ‘pet’ tadspoles in there. The spring peepers (Sean hates it when I call them that) are really ‘chirping’ lately. A nice ‘find’ was a bunch of crocuses under the chestnut tree. I must have gotten some as an Easter gift from years past and they got dumped there, so they were popping up in purples and white.
I’ve been in a dilemma since last night. Colleen, my sister-in-law was looking for a picture of her daughter Tori from her 1st birthday (needed it for a school scrapbook). She couldn’t find any! So I started to look, and then I looked some more. Finally, I came to the last stack thinking they were newer photos and there were the 1st birthday photos! Colleen didn’t take many shots I guess as she was in most of the ones I had! So I hope they were able to save the ones I sent through email.
While I was looking through the photos, I ran across one of our friend Kathy from Tennessee. About 3 hours later, out of the blue she called to wish Brian a belated Happy Birthday. Kathy shares the same birthday as me. It was nice to chat with her. She asked me if I was going to ever get my BS degree now that Sean was getting one, and I told her that I didn’t want to be a teacher and was happy with what I was doing now. Some career woman sure don’t understand us domestic goddesses!
Winter wonderland or PITA nor’easter?
A little of both I think? Sean’s school was cancelled and it didn’t start really snowing until late morning. Brian came home a bit early, but said the worst roads were around here.We don’t know what’s happening tomorrow, but with all the back roads we have, I doubt he’ll go in again. It was like a blizzard tonight.
I am really pooped from yesterday. It was a nice day and so good to do and see something different. Today Sean vacuumed for me and I made him apple streusel muffins and beef stew. We had stopped at a specialty food store last night so I could get some dinner food. Their beef was definitely better. I have been adding parsnips and turnips and the stew is so tasty.
Before grabbing the food, we had grabbed some dinner (we had to wait) at Ruby’s Diner a new place in the same shopping center. It’s mostly a burger place, but it has the decor of an old diner and the waitresses are dressed in cute red striped uniforms and the little hats. I had a turkey club on a French style roll with fat slices of turkey, bacon and avocado. Sean had shrimp tacos and Brian had a burger.
I watched the Oscar’s last night, mainly to see if Jamie Foxx would win for ‘Ray’ and he did! His speech was excellent. JF trivia-his real name is Eric Bishop.
Beyonce (has the same maiden name as me) Knowles was beautiful both in voice and dress and looks! Very nice that she sang three songs, but what about the Spanish one that won? I was pulling for ‘I Believe’. Frank Bielec said that celebrities are so ‘not real’ with their thin bodies, expensive jewels and gowns that they don’t own and I tend to agree. We need more real people like Hillary Swank who remembers about her struggle as a young teen in a trailer park.
So I watched the end of ‘The Bachelorette’ and Jen didn’t pick anyone! I wasn’t really surprised as she had such a hard time picking out the ring and dress and bawling her head off to her friends. Why did she do this show so soon after her breakup with Andrew Firestone? I think she is pining for him or doesn’t want to get hurt again. I liked Jerry, he looked like a guy I liked in high school-hey Michael B!!! Hope Jen finds love. If she couldn’t find it in 26 men, she may be a hopeless case. Sorry to say that.
