Dust mite or dust mate?

Standard

I stole the title from a webpage as it was just too perfect. Rachael Ray had a lady on today talking about the dust mite. Now she said to replace your bed every 5-7 years because they just get so ‘into’ the mattress, especially loading it with their droppings! Ugh! She also said pillows should be replaced every 1-3 years. She weighed one that was 3 yrs old and compared it to a new one-the old one weighed 8 ounces more.

I thought you should replace your mattress every 10 yrs, which we try to do. Some people never buy a new one! So come on-just imagine all the  dust mite poo you are sleeping on top of!  Ugh! At least enclose your mattress in plastic as that should help.

Yeah Abigail!

Standard

I was flipping channels after our dinner fiasco last night and found the Critic Choice awards. Abigail Breslin from ‘Little Miss Sunshine’ received an award for ‘Best Young Actress’. The teen who played her brother won for ‘Best Young Actor’. The movie won a few more awards too.

Update 1-23

Looks what 10 yr old is a nominee for a Best Actress Oscar!

Could Abigail pull a Tatum O’Neal and win an Oscar as a child?
Woo hoo!

So after church Sean wanted to go to a new Olive Garden down near Christiana, Delaware. When we got there it was mobbed and there was a hour to an hour and 45 minutes wait. Needless to say, we left. All the three other restaurants we tried were packed. It was cold as heck last night and we thought people would stay in their nice warm houses-wrong!  We finally went into a crowded place at 6:45 which was like diner. Some older man was in line and for some reason said; ‘women don’t want to cook anymore’. I thought that was totally uncalled for. What we had was fair-my turkey was dry around the edges. I have a whole turkey to cook down in the freezer and should get that out and make a yummy hot turkey sammie that I won’t let dry out. Is there any good restaurant food anymore?I’m still working on bags and boxes from the basement. I am going through gift wrap, bows, tags, etc. I got rid of a huge bag of squooshed bows, wrinkled wrap and tissue, you name it! I see a slight improvement.

More football

Standard

The Eagles are in the play-offs down in New Orleans. The guys are in their Eagle shirts and have their eyeballs glued to the tv. The only good thing-I can stay on the computer as long as I want. Think I’ll go make a collage or something. I’ll let you know how it goes. Just don’t show too many Campbell Soup commercials of Donovan McNabb eating clam chowder-not cool.

Having fun with WordPress

Standard

I’ve been playing with the side bar getting things in order. It’s really a fun place to blog. I moved Cosmo’s blog here too (see the sidebar). I just saw that is you move your mouse over the links, the owner’s blogger homepage comes up! I can’t figure out how to fix the time though. I hope if I ever close my blogger account that all my photos ‘won’t vanish’ because many of them were uploaded to blogger. Not much new-Target store security called me tonight and indeed Sean was overcharged (they review their video). Sean has to go back up there and get his moola-within 90 days. It does pay to complain.

Sorry if I ruined it for any of you European people with telling you what’s going on between Meredith and Derrick. I forgot!

Welcoming spring?

Standard

The weatherman all say ‘El Nino’. It was so weird to open the front door on Jan. 6th and have it feel like May outside with almost 70 degree temps. The Mummers got to strut their stuff down on Broad Street near City Hill in Philly after not being able to last weekend. We don’t go to the parade, but got to watch it a bit on tv. A friend in Philly said her three kids were suppose to be in the first part of it with the comic division and I hope they did! I was getting a kick out of seeing news reporter Vince DeMentri trying on all the Captain’s fancy hats.
Vince and me at a Tech show where NBC10 was a sponsor back in Nov 03 (I darkened this as my makeup was so pale next to his tan complexion, my hair isn’t black!). He and his coworkers were all very nice.

We were taking down Christmas stuff today. Brian did the lights outside and I did the things in the family room. The tree is still up and will slowly come down this week coming up. I’m not rushing anything. : )
For a change I pulled out some yarn and a crochet hook. I was originally going to crochet some Mary Jane slippers for Tori my niece, but the directions were for women size feet. So I made one and it fits me. I’ll have to make the other one and than adjust to a little girl’s foot. I’ll also have to get more of the ruby color so they will remind her of Dorothy’s ruby slippers from ‘The Wizard of Oz’, my original intention. I should get some yarn with sparkles through it!

Alton Brown kinda scares me…

Standard

I got ‘I’m Just Not Here for the Food-baking’ cookbook from Food Network’s Alton Brown for Christmas, at my request. I think Alton is pretty cool on his show and has a way with words and explaining things down to every minute detail. I knew he’d do the same thing with a baking book. Many people, Rachael Ray included (is she a bit overexposed these days-down to the Triscuit box?) are afraid of baking. Alton explains that baking is an ‘exact’ science. You can’t go around messing with how much butter you put in your batter as you will mess with the formula. Cooking is different-you can toss in a little more, say chili powder to your pot of chili and it will still be basically chili.
Alton suggests a few things that made me rethink the way I’ve been baking for over 30 years. For instance, you should really be weighing your ingredients instead of scooping them out of the flour jar, etc. He suggests getting a digital scale in your kitchen. He also aerates his flour with his food processor before he uses it in the recipe. I always skipped even sifting it, but he doesn’t like sifting-the food processor ‘fluffs up’ the flour. And did you know there are different mixing techniques? I really screwed up mixing the first time I used my KitchenAid when I decided to make muffins. I should have never used a mixer for muffin batter. I incorporated too much gas in the muffins and their lids fell flat.
I am learning many new things. Alton does include measuring we are all familiar with, but I am thinking about getting a scale now. There are oddles of new ideas in this book. If you like to bake and want to be more of a pro at it or even learn new techniques (like me), I’d invest in this excellent and informative book.
I guess I’m not really scared of Alton, I just need to try things in a new way.

Young Frankenstein gone

Standard

I meant to add this to my blog last week. I wanted to say how sorry I was to hear of the passing of Peter Boyle-the dad from ‘Everyone Loves Raymond’. Patricia Heaton, who played his daughter-in-law, was on Conan last night and she had just attended his funeral that day. Peter was from Norristown, PA, about an hour from here. I heard he was interested in becoming a priest at one time. As he got older, he reminded me of my Uncle Don in looks and mannerisms. My favorite role of his-Frankenstein and his dance number ‘Puttin’ on the Ritz’.

Sat and Sun

Standard

I settled in to watch the TLC shows Saturday night after all that clothes sorting and was in almost total shock over the rude behavior of the homeowner from Wyncote, PA. on Trading Spaces. She really hated her kitchen. And that was after her neighbors ripped down the 100s of Burpee sunflower seed packets off the wall. Doug Wilson was one of the designers and he reminded her that she signed up for the show and to basically expect the unexpected. She said that they did the show for themselves (the designers) not the homeowners! Oy! She got a new microwave and little flatscreen tv in the deal. So it turns out, this is two weeks later, that she pulled her horns in by doing a simple ‘paint job’ and moving her old table back in place- butta wouldn’t melt in her mouth! Some people!!
Today I was a little zombie-like from having insomnia until about 3:30 am. This happens sometimes when I drink cola after 6 at night. I pulled myself away from playing with PSP7 to make a turkey meatloaf. I was trying some ‘new’ ingredients like mustard/horseradish and worchestershire sauce. The sauce just dumped into my meat mixture instead of sprinkling like it is suppose to do. I managed to pour most of it off, but added brown sugar and more bread crumbs to take away some of the strong flavor. It was actually very good! I threw together some drop biscuits and brownies too. My oven was working overtime!
Things are getting tidied up well on the main floor of the house. I plan to do more later in the week.
I am getting so excited about the James Taylor concert coming up Tuesday night. We have good seats, not excellent ones, but I am thrilled to see JT again after over 9 yrs.

I’m sure you’ll be seeing these two in the future:

If you’ve been watching ‘The Amazing Race’ this year you will recognize the fun loving ‘hippies’ BJ (dark hair) and Tyler. They really make the over-edited show more enjoyable. I really haven’t seen them get too peeved at each other. I thought Harvard grad BJ almost threw in the towel last week when he had to dig in pile after pile of sand to retrieve a food item that was cooking in a pit (don’t ask me all the details). : ) While the other teams were finding theirs right away, he just couldn’t seem to find his until he almost passed out. Lucky for them, it was a non-elimination round, but they had to give up all their money and possessions. Good thing each was wearing their orange pants!
This week they decided to pick up a hitchhiker before they left the middle east-just because.
Too bad ‘MoJo’ the dating couple hate them. The guys keep warning MoJo that they will get them back by yielding them-the guys better get to places faster than them to do that!
Maybe we are looking at the Cheech and Chong of the 21st century. Or could they be Mister Rodgers/Pee Wee’s replacements? You get my drift.

Trading Spaces hits my hometown

Standard

I was sitting on the broken down sofa (they made some lame excuse why they never showed up) and I switched on Trading Spaces on TLC. Frank Bielec (who we met last year at a Home Show) and carpenter Amy Winn Pastor came on. Frank says, “We’re in Media, PA”. I almost fell through the sofa! They were in a neighborhood near where we all took our driver’s tests (Sean most recently-see Bortondale on the map). The map shows the start at moms (blanked out the name of her road) and the area of the makeovers-about 5 miles away.
What we thought was really a hoot was when the one couple went to The Riddle Thrift Shop. That’s a shop off a nearby hospital where Sean was born and mom’s doctor is located. Just in Nov. ’04, Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie went to another haunt of ours, a Goodwill in Delaware. So funny.
We were intrigued by the tiling that the one couple did in the other couple’s kitchen. I like the look and think we can do it. The mini-tiles come in sheets that are easy to glue on the wall then to grout. They also had taken down the cabinets, but they were small and metal, nothing like what we have to contend with. Media is definitely ‘Everyone’s hometown’ (their motto).
