One of the newest PHS members!

Standard

I did join the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society this morning-actually it’s a ‘dual’ one and for a year’s membership, we got two free flower show tickets ($26 each!). We were all dressed and ready to go at 10:30 (the daylight savings messed us up) and Brian couldn’t get a hold of his dad. He tried for an hour and the answering machine kept coming on. So Brian didn’t get to go to the show and Sean and I decided to at least go to my mom’s and wait to see what was going on. Here he was sound asleep in his bed, the phone was in the other room, the tv was blasting downstairs and the stove was left on. Brian had to physically shake him to wake him up! He said he’s always been a sound sleeper, but I’d say the phone must have rang 100s of times and he didn’t hear it! The next room isn’t that far away. We thought he had fallen down.
We took my mom again (she had gone with my brother Don on Thursday) and Sean got the student price. My membership and tickets were waiting for me at the booth in the convention center. I thought for sure I’d have to wait to use them next year as it said I had to give them 24 hours to process. Before we went into the show, we ate lunch in the Reading Terminal Market-such a bustling places with lots of sights and sounds. I will share a few photos, but need to upload over 100 on Flickr during the upcoming week.

The show had an Italian theme and there was lots of gorgeous statuary:

And this is one of the miniature shadow boxes-all the tiny plants have to be real!:

My brother Don was at my mom’s and he treated us to a nice dinner up in our hometown. It turned out to be an adventurous day for sure!
I made a video too and will edit that sometime this week too-all the water features are on it plus a silly son!

These are a small sampling of my son Sean’s 30+ caps. I know he has a bunch of them up at school too. The only sports team he is missing is the Flyers-got to resolve that. (and since he’s been gone a week now-up to PSU, it makes me think of him).
Of course we are pulling for the Eagles to win against the Cardinals, which they have done before on Thanksgiving. This may be the year-who knows? Go Eagles!

I Recommend for Sunday-#8

Standard

Welcome to the eighth (full) edition of ‘I recommend’. As the name implies, this is a share to recommend just about anything you like or have tried. It can be a book, drink, food, movie, music CD-anything. Mister Linky will open to another page (that’s how it works on WordPress). Please add your link there and don’t forget to leave me a comment here.

Amaryllis blooming, originally uploaded by DianthusMoon.

During the winter, many of us gardeners miss the joy in seeing their outdoor flower gardens blooming and need some kind of cheery ‘fix’.  I try and save some of my garden flowers, but many have gone kaput by January or February. I recommend forcing bulbs such as the amaryllis I have pictured. Brian gave me this for my November birthday and I saw that it had opened over the weekend.
I also love African violets.
My African violets
They come in all colors from white to the darkest purple. Their leaves can be variegated too. They put up with a lot of neglect most of the time. I keep a bottle of AV plant food handy when I remember to water them and they perk up and give me a massive show of blooms.

So I finally got around to reading Philadelphia magazine’s 1oo year anniversary issue.  Since I’ve lived around this city for almost half that, I was interested to read their top 100 things that made Philly stand out. Since you probably don’t have a copy of it, #1 was Philly cheesesteaks. I was curious to know if my readers have had one? I make them once in a while and found some good steak meat that wasn’t a Minute Steak or Steak-ums-more flavor, a little more money. Gee, I think I want one soon! My tummy is definitely better.
It’s your turn:

Who’s this? And the start of a new meme/share

Standard

I was looking at someone’s website (not related) and saw this photo of him when he was almost one:

I sure hope they didn’t call him by his given name of Colbert back then. Look at the fine hair and then look at his little Dockers!

Flash forward about 23 yrs and here he is with his gorgeous bride:

Did you guess it was the Phillies MVP for the World Series- Cole Hamels? He got married to Heidi Strobel back on New Year’s Eve 2006. Heidi was a contestant on Survivor the reality show (one of my favorite shows-I’ve watched every season!) when it was set in the Amazon. Incidently, Heidi turned 30 the night the Phils won the Series. To see more of Cole’s favorite photos check out his site.

I’m going to start a meme/share! I think every Sunday for now. If that doesn’t work, I’ll try another day. It will be called ‘I Recommend’. That can be anything-from food, to a book, to a tv show, it’s up to you! I had books in mind at first, then I thought I’d extend it to include more. I have to make a button for it today. I’ll have Mister Linky too! Please join in the fun. Watch for more later.

Thanks Jennifer, no, I didn’t lose weight, black is a slimming color-I ‘recommend’ it. : )

Fish house display, originally uploaded by DianthusMoon.

This is from the Philadelphia Flower Show 2006. I don’t think I’ve used it before, but it’s a popular shot of mine that I am fond of too. It’s on Cafepress and a pal requested it on a long sleeved t-shirt. It looks awesome!

I call it ‘Fish House’ as the little window indeed is a fish tank.

Here are newer shots featuring blue:

From last night, a snap of my dear niece and me at her house:

She’s a hippie chick and Bri called me a rejected Munchkin! You don’t see my black and orange striped socks and Mary Janes.  I also have a ton of makeup on.  I dressed up mainly for my mom as she seemed to need a little Halloween spirit.

A scene from the Phillies parade off the tv. I heard there were maybe 3 million people there!

So we had to wait a few days to finish off game 5-so worth it!
Congrats Phils!!! Most valuable player is pitcher 24 yr old Cole Hamels. It’s been awesome watching the interviews and trying to catch some photos off the tv. We hopped around to about 4 stations.
The big victory parade is Friday at noon. Think I’ll take photos off the tv again. I’m sure there will be personal appearances in the near future.

Tug at my heartstrings

Brian happened to look on the shelf on the bookcase above where I was looking and found Tug:

How I wish my grandmom had taken a photo of us together back in May, 1982! Now I have restored faith about tonight! Tug’s son Mark hung his dad’s World Series ring above his dad’s favorite bar (I think in Philly somewhere) today.

I received a Blog giveaway from Sherry over at If I Could Set My Soul Free. What a great bag! It’s pretty and roomy. I’ll get a lot of use out of it. Lucky me!

Sherry has an etsy shop (see her blog) and hand makes so many pretty pieces like this!

I just added books and a quilt square kit to my etsy shop-link on right under Artilicious Divas. Also added a few things in eBay at the top under Moonlitstitcher’s Page. I need some pocket moola!

You may be hearing from me in a few hours!
