8 Random things…

Standard

I’ve been tagged for the “8 Random Things about me” meme by Karen.

The Rules:

~ Each player starts with 8 random facts/habits about themselves
~ People who are tagged write a blog post about their own 8 random things and post these rules
~ At the end of your blog you need to tag 8 people and post their names
~ Don’t forget to leave them a comment and tell them they’re tagged, and to read your blog.

1-When I was a kid, I loved to play outside at night in the summertime, especially hide and seek and catching fireflies. I still like the nighttime and love to look at my solar lights illuminating my little pond.

2-I sometimes think about pulling weeds in my sleep, especially if I need to do some yard work.

3-I have 100s of book and rarely look at any of them anymore (randomly), though I can’t get rid of them. Most are non-fiction too, so I have tons of reference. Maybe I should start reviewing books on my blog!

4-At one time I thought Bri and I could start a photography business like Olan Mills with me making original backdrops.

5-I use to watch The Wizard of Oz every year, (no fail) as a kid (it was only broadcast once a year-before videos!)

6-I love to spray paint things to make them look new again.

7-I’m kinda scared about traveling to places like NYC (and am going for the first time next month), but once I get to the new place, I really enjoy checking it out.

8-My one year younger brother and I use to do singing routines to entertain my mom and grandmom. My brother always out sung me, though I ended up in the church choir for a number of years.

If you’d like to do this, please go ahead.

Wishy washy in a good way

Standard

We did need the rain we got in the late afternoon, especially the pine barrens over in New Jersey that were engulfed in flames. Seems a test pilot dropped a flare in the area-problem is it’s been windy and a bit dry-fuel for fire. I hope the rain helped!

I’m having sleeping issues from overusing my muscles. Now a tooth on the opposite side where I have to get the crown is bothering me-I need to chew somewhere. Looks like a crack is in the filling. I should get it checked out before the 29th. Sean went to the dentist today and has some of his first cavities. They are small, so he can wait a few months to get them filled. Bri goes for his check up tomorrow.

I just had wet eyes from Lost. I don’t know if you watch it, but Charlie knows he is going to die from a premonition Desmond made (who is also stuck on the island where their plane crashed). So Charlie is shown in flashbacks-the first time he jumps in a pool as a child-he writes it down as #5 as his favorite moment. So when they got to the moment he met Claire, one of the other survivors, he writes meeting her as #1! Sniffle. I’m a sap.

Working hard

Standard

I spent a large part of the afternoon outside. It was around 70 or so and a little breezy, so nice. First I cleaned the chaise that a lady from Freecycle gave us (another freebie). It was really dirty and only spray on bleach and a wire brush would take the mildew and green off. I let it dry and started to spray paint it green but ran out. What a difference though. I also trash picked a perfectly good outdoor side table with a glass top. They were tossing it because it was green (on the underneath mostly) which came off in 10 minutes! Now it’s like new again!

Here are some photos of the fruit of my labor. Sean also edged and planted ‘his’ garden that he’s had for over 1o yrs.

This is one half irises. I just replanted gladiolus I save from last year. My hollyhock was split in 3 and moved to here.

Lily and grasses garden
Where I have most of my lilies and grasses. The grass is taking over and it’s getting thinned out. I have about half of this weeded. We are slowly getting rid of an old grape arbor in the background that is covered with sticky vines-it’s hard work.

An iris that bloomed today-honeycomb(?)

Guess what happened to us about 6:45 tonight? We got locked out of the house! I went to go in to put the camera away and the suction from the screen door pulled shut the big door! Luckily, a window was left open in the back of the house and Sean was able to take out the screen and ‘slither’ into the house (he had to hand me about 5 African violets before he had room to get in). He did get a brush burn from the handle that opens the window and hurt his stomach a little-I don’t think Bri or I could have done what he did. Lesson we learned-hide a set of keys somewhere outside!

Mother’s Day rap up

Standard

I didn’t get to spend the day with my own mom, but I promised her Sean and I would come down on Tuesday to plant a few annuals in the garden I fixed up for her last year.

I have terrible dry (and a bit itchy) allergy eyes. I thought it was from handling dusty Space Bags of my summer clothes, but I’m now thinking something is pollening that is bothering me. I am using both tears and allergy formula and it helps a bit, but looking at this screen is not easy. I’ll call the eye doctor if they aren’t better in a few days. I just have some circles under my eyes (what else is new).

I got two lovely cards today and one from my friend Terri in Alabama the other day-hers was a total surprise and so sweet. Sean’s was oversized and pink and flowery with sweet reflections of motherhood. Bri gave me a musical card that played ‘How Sweet it is’ by Marvin Gaye. (James Taylor also recorded it later on).

I asked Sean to drive to a garden center at a store in Delaware, but they didn’t have one this year. We ended up at Loew’s and their stuff was just ok. I got some tomatoes and a few flowers and bags of red mulch.

We grabbed a burger at Friendly’s and headed home.

I just watched the 3-hour long ‘Survivor’ finale and reunion while trying to finish up a redwork cross stitched piece. I was cheering for a 54-yr old man to win named Yau-man, but he got back stabbed as the remaining players knew he’d win if he was left in the ‘final three’. I miss talking about ‘Survivor’ with my estranged brother who enjoys it too.

So to end this nice weekend, here are some things I admire about my mom-her beautiful, trained soprano voice, her ability to pick up a pen, pencil or marker and sketch a portrait that resembles the person she is trying to capture (and from memory sometimes) and her love of giving, though that gets her in trouble sometimes. I told her once that Penelope Cruz could be her daughter more than me as she looks like mom a little. The next thing you know someone asks if we are mother and daughter and they say ‘I can tell’. What a nice compliment.

I tried the edger tool that Brian just gave me (so long electric edger) and it works pretty good, but I can see me only using it after a rainstorm like we had last night.

I am sorting winter and summer clothes. Not fun when it’s so gorgeous outside. I may stop once I get the clothes off the bed-I still have to swap out my footwear. I try to get rid of at least a kitchen trash can size bag of clothes every time I do the switch over.

Hey, I’m wondering what my readers do with their seasonal clothes? Are you lucky enough to have a huge walk-in closet? Aren’t you a person that saves that many clothes each year? I know I don’t wear them all, but some years I’m more of a sweater person than the next year.

I’d rather be gardening…

So close

My friend from New York was on a group trip to Longwood Gardens Saturday. She told me the night before and I was bummed as I had other plans, but I would have tried to track her down. She was 8 minutes away and we could finally meet after being pals at least 8 years or more. We almost met down in Atlantic City but missed each other again back in 1999. It would have been hard to visit with her group in tow. They all raved about LG. I heard that my Uncle Don’s wife was with a group from the nursing home at Longwood yesterday too. Aunt Mildred use to go all the time by herself, just like I plan to do one of these days.

Sean went with me to get the free lounge chair yesterday. It’s not bad for free. It has to be fixed up a bit, but it’s so nice to know I can go put my feet up and read and stitch in the summer months. I’m actually (hopefully) getting another one that sounds like the one I just tossed. Bri will pick that up on Friday.

Didn’t do too much today as it was chilly. I potted up some petunias-three pots and also a hanging basket of portulaca. It’s going to be chilly tonight, so I hope my plants will be fine.

I still need to food shop, do more laundry, well the list never ends.

Bri went to see his dad and I asked him to bring home some ‘D’ pizza (you know which chain this is) as I was going to give it one more shot-but it was awful. It’s on my never eat again list along with KFC.

Ferns and fluffy blossoms

Standard

I am fascinated with ferns. I enjoy watching them do this:

Ferns opening

I have transplanted a bunch of them in all different parts of my yard, even some cinnamon(?) ones in my fairy/gnome garden. I should try to get a nice variety as they are so neat to look at.

Last night Bri was fascinated by the chorus of ‘humming’ coming from the two apple trees we have (and never get fruit from as they aren’t cared for properly and overgrown) that the bees were doing. They are loaded with blossoms-so pretty. The yard smells so good!

My tooth doesn’t hurt, but my gum in that area tastes metallic and my tooth is really smooth and slanted. I can’t believe I have to wait until the end of May for the crown. I know Dr. B was a bit upset because he couldn’t save it. I just am crossing fingers I don’t have to have a root canal. What he did yesterday hurt more than the two I’ve had already. He pressed this metal ring into my buggered up gum. I have a high tolerance for pain, but he said the only alternative was a needle in the roof of my mouth. Don’t ya love dental talk?

Back to gardening-got some annuals in the ground-Victoria Blue Salvia (one of my favorites) in my front garden that is under the evergreen (added a few apricot colored ones too) and also a dozen snapdragons in a variety of colors along the path in front of the house. I also potted up royal purple petunias and some white, light blue and blue lobelia. I had Cosmo the kitty out with me on his harness and he managed to tangle himself up good in my hedge. He was getting panicky, but I got him out.

Still a lot to do, but we’ve been blessed with gorgeous weather. I’ve had two larger ticks on me which I found crawling up my leg. You know ticks scare me as I have Lyme Disease from the little teenie deer tick. Better get out the DEET.

And to the writers of Grey’s Anatomy-women aren’t dried up because they like to do needlework-geez-that wasn’t even funny!

Here we go again

Standard

I had a dental appointment a few hours ago to repair a cavity. I just love sitting in the dentist’s chair when it’s this nice out. About 3 hours before my appt, I was sitting here chewing gum and felt a ‘crunch’ in my mouth. You guessed it, part of a tooth broke off-next to the cavity! So Dr. B drilled and drilled and said that my tooth’s structure wasn’t good and I have to get yet another crown! Bummer.

I’ll post some stitching pieces I’ve been working on soon (after my face isn’t numb anymore and I feel like taking photos). The one pattern of the old fashioned girl stitching is the same pal Su did. I ran out of the floss near the bottom so I have to get more. I also pulled out ‘The Cape’ of the Cape May, NJ shoreline and put a few stitches in that. I need to get that one finished!

Down a country road…or two

Standard

I ventured out to the bank and post office and decided to go to my favorite nursery and do some more flower shopping. I went straight on a road that I thought would lead me to the correct road down in Delaware. Boy was I wrong! I couldn’t believe I was in like 3-5 miles of my house as I couldn’t get my bearing and saw nothing familiar. When I finally found a road that said ‘Old Kennett Pike’ I turned and then the sign said ‘to PA’. Geez, that was a 30 minute ride I won’t forget! I did go to the nursery down the regular back roads I know. I was happy I went as I bought a profusion of color in the form of petunias, dianthus, snapdragons, impatiens and a few more. So I’m all ready to start planting. The place didn’t have my red mulch, so I have to go back for that.

By the way, when I got home I looked at Google maps and some of the roads I saw I actually could get to the nursery-I think I went the wrong way on Old Kennett Pike. I do appreciate where I live even more-the landscape is gorgeous.

Finally, some snapshots:

Transplanted bleeding heart
I transplanted a bleeding heart plant that was hidden between bushes last year. What a treat to see the plant (separated into three new ones) blooming so lovely.

My 1st iris of the year
My first dear iris of the year called ‘Stitch Witch’ (don’t say ‘so appropriate’-lol). I can’t wait to see all the different colors blend together.

Hello down there

Standard

Sean was checking out the weather on the web and went to the aerial view section and actually found our house and road…

Overhead shot

Not sure if I did this before-my house has the black rectangle around it. That looks like our old light gray roof too! Most of our yard is to the right. The road parallel to our road at the end of our property was actually moved so our yard looks bigger now. Before the development on the hill, this was all farmland. And down that ‘new’ road is another housing development. Within the last 6 months, another home was built to the left of the last house on our side in that green patch of land. The ‘house’ across the road and down a bit is a water pumping station. As you can see we don’t have too many neighbors right around us, not counting the new houses.

My allergies are kicking up big time. I think I ate something that didn’t agree with me either and my plans for today went down the drain. I did go outside to do a little more raking around my irises and to walk the cat. I need to get some groceries. Sean is taking off tomorrow as he had one class (next week is his last week until summer session). Maybe we can go out to lunch if the weather isn’t too stinky.

I’ll model my new outfit soon and have one of the guys take a photo for those who wanted to see it. ; )
