In the soup

Standard

I went out to take a few rose shots after dinner and my lens kept steaming up! You could cut the air with a knife. I got my photos after a few tries and turned right around to come in again.

Uncle Don a few years ago
My mom said my Uncle Don came home today. I sure hope he is getting help. Mom thinks someone is suppose to be there helping him 3 hours a day. He has a great neighbor who even went to get him ‘sprung’ as he left against the doctor’s wishes unfortunately. He’s very thin, like 138 pds for someone who is 5’10”. He’s also very stubborn like his mom. He came home to find his stepdaughters had removed the a/c units as they were afraid it would have been too easy to break into the house with them in place. The good thing he is about 20 minutes or so away from me instead of 45-50 minutes. Sean won’t be here, so I can surely bring meals and such over to him. When he came home right before last Christmas, he seemed pretty content. Then he fell and broke his hip. He said good-bye to my aunt who is still at the nursing home. She’s a bit older than him and in a wheelchair and naps a lot. Keep my 84 yr old Uncle Don in your thoughts and prayers. Mom feels that him being home is another thing to worry about. Where he was cost over 1K a week(!) and he had to share a small room with another man. Sounds sucky to me. I’d want to go home too.

In the company

I’m still here and so is my mom! I went to get her on Saturday. She got a new frig just like mine, but a shelf smaller in both sections.  She didn’t have one of the shelves separated, so I did that and rearranged items in it for her. She tossed a bunch of stuff out of the old one. I started to get a big allergy attack there that unfortunately lasted all day. I took mom to the farmer’s market for lunch and then we dropped by the Goodwill as I had a bag of stuff (old cross stitch leaflets) to leave. We went inside and I struck pay dirt! Someone had dropped off a bunch of cookbooks-Emeril and a few other Food Network people. I also got a white wicker buggy for my teddies. By the way, the guys went on the bus to Atlantic City with Bri’s dad as they hadn’t been down there for a while. I would have been by myself all day.

We came home and just vegged out as I wasn’t up to par. Bri and Sean didn’t get home until after 10 as there was a ton of traffic on Saturday. They went to the new mall and were most impressed by the new fountain and light show that rivals the Longwood Gardens show! I went to bed early but didn’t sleep all night! I couldn’t turn my brain or bladder off. Sunday was a sit around day. Mom seemed to enjoy sitting in the lounge chair and painting with her ‘Watercolor a day’ calendar. We ordered Chinese food which I was disappointed to do as I like to cook for mom when she comes here.

We watched the finale of ‘The Next Food Network Star’ and I swear I could have gone to bed at 9 when it started I was so wiped out. I voted for both Amy and Rory, to be fair I thought. I was happy Amy won as they don’t have someone quite like her on the channel. Rory looks like she has a popular restaurant she just opened in Texas. Good luck to both of them.

Today we were planning on Longwood Gardens, but it looks like rain. Bummer. Sean and I will take mom home tomorrow. Then on Wednesday I have to get a tooth checked out as it hurts every time I eat. My dental woes continue!

Out and about

Standard

Sean and I went down to Hockessin to a little coffee and sandwich shop called ‘The Perfect Cup Cafe’ for lunch-a rather pricey lunch, but we don’t go there that often. He was off today. He had a veggie wrap and I had a chicken salad with swiss that was grilled-not bad. I asked if we could go a few blocks down to the Gateway Garden Nursery as I needed a few plants for an interesting urn I just purchased at JoAnns. I bought one (for about $7), but I’m thinking three would look neat tucked under my hedges out front. You can either hang the urn or it lays flat. Lucky for me the nursery had a 50% off annual sale and I got quite a few plants for under $20. I got my 9th variety of coleus-lime green and white (it’s a good year for it and of course I plan to save some for my experiment!). I also bought another licorice plant (like a variegated one) for the urn so it hangs over its edge). I got some yellow pinwheels zinnias and a couple of variety of ferns (which I like up there on my list with coleus). At the check out, a lady who works there, probably the owner or manager, asked if we had a cat and I said yes, so she handed me a cute little tin that came with cat grass-for free (from the sale table)! A few minutes later as we were putting the plants in Sean’s trunk, I noticed she had a wagon of plants she was tossing. I asked if ‘anything was worth saving (HA) and she handed me a mandevilla, another viney plant and a gardenia-for free. When she went to back to the nursery yard, I snagged some blue lobelia out of the trash too. Don’t ya love when stuff like that happens?

My mom is still trying to work out her problems but she is really using me as a sounding board. I was really stressed tonight and blame myself for not taking charge of her bills and not giving her an allowance. She use to have my uncle to help her, but he’s probably in the nursing home for good now. She doesn’t talk to him that often, but I know he has no appetite and only weighs about 138 lbs (and he’s 5’10”). I haven’t been out to see him either as it’s a trip and he’s so down all the time. I know that sounds awful, but maybe he needs people who don’t know and love him as much as us to talk to. Hopefully things will get better soon.

Locally-so the Phillies lost their 10,000th  game in their over 100 year history beating out all other teams for that honor. So what? I can’t tell you how good a summer and fall that team gave us all in 1980 when they won the World Series and again in ’93 when they tried again. I got to meet Tug McGraw, the relief pitcher in person. He and Mike Schmidt (3rd base) lived in my hometown and I had seen Mike’s house several times. So many fans have good memories like that.

Zinnias for my grandmom

I grow these every year and it’s a bumper crop!

I wanted to add that I made some comments about someone’s looks today that I regret. No one is perfect on the outside, it’s what’s on the inside that counts. My little grandmom had very homely feet. But she stood on her poor little feet many an hour to cook us hot meals and suffered finding shoes that were comfortable for her. By the time she was an elderly lady she didn’t worry that much about her feet. So from a middle-aged, near-sighted,  chubby, gap-toothed lady with some capped teeth and dyed hair-I wish you a good weekend! (I feel so much better)

This is me when I was a little baby with my older brother Dave. He was an only child for over 5 years and was happy to get a sibling. Almost one year later, he got a brother! Dave called us ‘the babies’ until we were preteens and then he got another brother 12.5 yrs younger than him.

By the way, Dave is having his 53rd birthday on the 4th of July! Happy Birthday big bro! And you can figure out how old this photo is too.

Say bye bye to Yahoo photos

Standard

Yeah, they are ‘closing shop’ at the end of September. But as many of you know, they are affiliated with Flickr which is a paid service. I told Yahoo to go ahead and move all 1,600 photos (who knew?) over to Flickr. I think I can afford $2 a month for the upkeep. It’s nice to know I have a safe place on the web too. And the photo quality vs. Yahoo is like night and day. I was up late last night browsing some of my photos that I haven’t seen in a clear light for a while.

It’s a hot one in PA today. I haven’t been outside except in my robe at 12:30 (ok, I wanted to take a shower) as Veronica’s Neighborhood Round Robin came in the mail from Rachael today. I am the last one to stitch on it from our group. It’s really charming. I will be looking for the perfect addition. I’m thinking ‘store’ as Carol has a store opposite of where I will be stitching.

Here’s a coincidence for you-last week before the NYC trip, Sean rented Bobby. It was about Robert F. Kennedy in an indirect way-it told of the day and night leading up to his assassination at the hotel in California. I didn’t remember (I was 8 at the time) that 6 people got shot in the kitchen that night. So a few days later there we are sitting in St. Patrick’s Cathedral where RFK’s funeral took place. I’ve also been to his graveside at Arlington Cemetery in Washington, DC that is marked by a simple white cross. I think he really could have made a different in this country.

In my Vod:Pod I have a recording by the Leo Reisman orchestra who my great uncle Frank played trumpet with. Not sure if he is on this actual recording-the Merry Widow Waltz, but he was on the soundtrack of Paper Moon. Why the interest? Since Barbara is having twins, I told her about Frank and his brother being twins.

Busy, busy

We’re getting ready for the trip on Friday. Both Sean and I have been trying to get our guts in gear. We did venture out to Kohl’s yesterday as Brian needed some nice shirts. I usually am not disappointed by that store. I got him 3 shirts-a printed tee, a pull-over light blue golf shirt and an olive green with a design cotton button down. I got a few tops myself-I couldn’t help myself! ☺

Sean got the suitcases out of the attic this afternoon-no easy feat. I have everything ready to pack. Also got all the over-the counters (Tylenol, etc) bagged up. I take a goodie bag with those little bags of chips, etc. I also bring tons of beverages as I refuse to pay the hotel’s prices.

This is going to go by way to fast, I’m afraid. I realized if we don’t see the bride and groom on Friday, we’ll only see them from like 12:30-3:00 on the day of the wedding. The reception is only 2 hours before their honeymoon cruise sails. I guess it will look a little like this (clickable):

So that’s my life lately in a nutshell. I will say the IBS herbal stuff my mom got for me seems to be doing the trick. Plus things with the air conditioning are better, no water on the floor, but it still needs that part.

Hope to drop in again tomorrow.

By the way, I know most of my readers are women, so click on this and read about heart attacks in women. My friend had originally sent me an article about how you shouldn’t drink ice cold drinks with your meals and I found the above.

Traveling day

First I’d like to thank Vonna for her sweet scissor fob. I see she surprised other stitching bloggers as she did me. Her thoughtfulness touched me to the core. I promise to add a photo when I do a WIP progress photo soon.

Yesterday we ventured over the Commodore Barry Bridge to my brother’s house in NJ and the grad parties for his sons David and Patrick.

The graduates

It was a bit steamy, but breezy too. We were luck to avoid an accident on I-95 (which we saw in it’s beginning with the traffic starting to back up).

I toted along the camera but ended up not getting good shots as the graduates were hard to track down. My mom said she took more, so I’ll scan some of them. My sinuses were not good and I think bothering yet another tooth, so I was keeping a low profile and talking to old friends of my sister-in-laws. My greatest gift was how nice my brother Dave was to me. I know, that sounds funny, but usually he doesn’t have much to say to us. I showed him the new camera which he really liked.

So here are a few measly shots (I’m not the only one who can take photos guys!) The two bridge shots were on the way home and taken by Brian.

Graduation gift

Standard

This is for my nephew who just graduated from high school on Wednesday, exactly 30 years after me! This is on a pale green aida (which I don’t mind stitching on once in a while to save my eyes) and it’s mounted on cardboard with a green felt backing. The school’s colors are green and gold. His middle name is Ian. The original ‘I’ looked like a lowercase ‘l’, so I made up a new ‘I’. Also in the original, there were two graduates, but I opted on using his name and info instead of the girl. I designed the mortar board as the design is from a button company and you are suppose to use their button. There are some green and light yellow beads on this too.

Pat’s gift

I learned that Tori was sick last weekend and is now fine. I was at my mom’s today and decided to drop off a goodie bag for Tori on the way home and she was cheerful and running around. Her brother Kenny just graduated from elementary school today. He’s about 5’5″ or so, he’s taller than his mom and auntie.

My mom is showering me with gifts-jewelry and clothes! She won a little money and wanted me to have a few things. Hey, I love a bargain (Monet jewelry for $5 each), but I need more clothes and jewelry like a hole in the head. It makes her happy. Everyone isn’t feeling up to par-Mom, Sean and still me. Our weather goes from hot to cool. We were lucky if it was 70 today. I’m someone who is affected by changes like that. Mom and I went to one of our favorite restaurants and I could only eat half of my chicken salad sandwich. I ate the other half for dinner.

Have a great weekend.

Quick update

Standard

Repairman #3 for the air conditioner was here for 4 hours. Talk about stress! He finally started talking. The poor guy just couldn’t figure it out until he noticed a valve outside wasn’t working correctly. I think he took the whole A/C unit apart. He has to order the part. It’s a hefty bill. We learned from a message that the supervisor wasn’t going to charge us for the first two visits (almost $400!!). Thank goodness.

Haven’t heard about Tori. Mom called twice as did I. Mom always thinks the worst, like she is in the hospital. I think they would have told us. We’ve dealt with strep and once we got the medicine in our system we felt a ton better.

I finished a graduation piece for my nephew Patrick. I’m making it into a flat piece (like an ornament) with a hanger. I’ll post a photo soon.

BTW-here’s a cool way to get some extra cash-gather up your pounds of coins and go to one of those Coin Star machines (better yet, cash them in for free at a Commerce bank- we don’t have any around here). I had half a freezer bag full and we got $38! Bri got kitty litter (ha), we had enough for a light dinner, 2 greeting cards for Bri’s dad (his 84th is on the 23rd) and I blew the rest on  a Raggedy Ann (for my collection) and a patriotic mini flag. My father-in-law gives us a bunch of coins all the time.

Going to hit the hay shortly. We’ve all had a long and stressful day.
