The postman always rings…

Standard

…more than once for me! I’m still celebrating my birthday 10 days later thanks to AnneMarie from the Netherlands and my friend Angela from N.Y.
Here are the surprises from AnneMarie. What a wonderful stitcher and a perfect finisher she is!

The Prairie Schooler is my favorite cross stitch designer, so AM did a black bird autumnal design for me. The book is a pretty DMC one featuring fruits. The two kinds of fabric will be well utilized. Thanks so much AM! I’ll send you off one of my special collage cards soon.

Today a package came from Angela. She had designed 3 gorgeous scrapbook pages for me! One for my birthday, one for Cosmo the cat and one with a Victorian flair. I’ll add some photos and share with you.

I am making some goodies in the form of gifts. The glue isn’t cooperating, but I plan to make 6 on these ‘items’ to start off with. I don’t want to say what they are, but I’ll show you in a couple of weeks. I put on James Taylor’s Cmas cd and went to town. That’s the best medicine. : )

I ran across this at Rocks in my Dryer. Shannon wanted to know some cool Christmas ideas. I would say the Christmas Memory Book I did about 11-12 years ago was pretty neat. I went through my mom’s photos and added many of my own to the collection. I made nice scrapbook like pages on 8.5″ x 11″ paper. I went from when my siblings and I were little to when our kids were little. I asked each family member what their best memory of Christmas was. I got some interesting answers! Everyone had their own page which I typed up and used different fonts for everyone. I got enough copied for all my brothers and our mom and put them in red plastic report folders that I decorated with sparkly snowflake stickers. I still look at mine!

Perfectionist

Standard

I use to be too hard on myself about getting things perfect. Nothing is perfect really. That said, I was going through my cross stitch stuff last night and found about 4 UFOs (unfinished obejects/pieces) that only need a few things to actually complete them. Like the Christmas peace sheep only needs the 4 words ‘peace’ in the border. And the Hershey kiss kids just need the background. I held that last one up to tell Brian that I worked on it when we lived in the apartment-that was over 20 years ago. One is of Amish children under an apple tree. I need to finish the tree, birdhouse and basket. I think this one put me off because of all the apples. Then I have a beagle pup in an unfinished basket. Does anyone have a beagle out there who would like this? I forget who I was making this for, maybe an old friend of my brother’s. So I have a few pieces to get finished and I’ll show them to you soon!

I am a little upset because I still have the ear problem. I’ve had it off and on for years. It’s annoying , especially if I am sitting quietily and better when I am working around the house. It’s like hearing crickets outside in the summer, but quieter. I read it could be from allergies, Lyme Disease or too much wax. I’ve had/have all three. Our newer phone projects the speaker quite loud, so I am wondering if that could be a problem too. I can hear Bri’s dad talking to him on the phone when he is 10 feet away! I remember having a bad episode of it when my niece was born-that was 7.5 yrs ago. My allergies were not great that year either. I’ll get them checked out if it gets any worse.

Stitching blogger question

Standard

Q. Do you stitch Christmas ornaments? If so, how many do you stitch each
year and for whom? If not, why not?

Yes, I do make Christmas ornaments that I mostly give away. I don’t make a lot, maybe 3-4, but I always want to start in the summer to make more and rarely do. I have two completed now waiting for me to finish them. My one charity group usually picks a few children and we make a ton of ornaments for them. A few years ago it was a family with special needs kids (all adopted) and the mom was so thrilled that the ornaments really filled in their tree.
I like to make them because they are quick stitches and you can assemble them in so many different ways.

A little cross stitch piece

Standard

I finished this as part of a neighborhood round robin a few days ago (sorry for the blurry photo). I really think it’s cute as can ‘bee’, especially the little beekeep. I added the swarm of bees in the shape of a ‘P’ for the name of the owner’s son. This is for a nice lady in The Netherlands. My own piece is in New Hampshire right now. It gets to travel more than I do! : ) This is by ‘The Prairie Schooler’- ‘ G’ is for Garden.

Pin cushions

Standard

These are some pin cushions I made over the weekend. I had a bad night Friday night (had insomnia) so it was nice to sit at the table and do something creative. The round pin cushion isn’t actually finished yet. I will probably add some ribbon to the edge. I took a candy tin and spray painted it a tan color. There are two layers of batting so there is something to stick the needles into. It is a Prairie Schooler freebie called ‘Stick it Here’.
The other pin cushions are so easy to make! The bottoms are a spool of thread. Don’t pick up the ones that cost $2.50 each like I did! The tops are half a styrofoam ball cover with fabric. The red one has a little glass ‘drop’ with a mushroom inside that someone sent me when I ordered a handmade glass item from them. I thought it looked cute hanging from this. Mom saw them and asked if she could have one! I plan to make more!
My mom stayed overnight and will probably be here another night. She needed to get away from her house, plus she got to go to the Olive Garden with us!

Stitching Blogger Questions

Standard

I’m doing two questions in one week:
How do you `non-hoopists’ who use a rotation system handle it (as it seems to be lot easier if you are in good terms with hoop)? Do you have several scroll frames? Do you use Q-snaps or maybe something completely different? Or do you just have one or two big projects and others are small enough to be kept in hand while stitching?
I have about 4 sets Q-snaps. I can only enjoy and handle the smaller ones that are about 12″x12″. If I am working on an ornament I stitch in hand which is difficult for me. I do have a scroll frame that I should try to utilize for bigger pieces.

Do you mark or hi-lite your patterns or can you follow them without any markings? Do you make copies to mark up, or do you mark originals?
No, I put the pattern in a see-through
plastic sleeve and use either a post-it or piece of tacky masking tape to guide me. To make it easier, I try to do a bunch of the same color stitches at a time. I can usually follow smaller patterns no bigger than 4″ without marking my spot.

Not much new in the stitching dept. I did finish a freebie from Prairie Schooler called ‘Stick it Here’. Thanks to Barbara for that. I am going to apply it to the lid of a round tin. Before I do that, I will spray paint the tin a tan color. I got a nice neutral color so I can use it on the other tins I have.
I am alternating the two Love Quilt squares due early next year. I am bored to tears with the train engine. I will persevere because I am adding a special touch to it. I’ll share it when I complete it. I am also doing a cute bear from a UK magazine. I just frogged it a bit tonight, but I love doing this one. I am working on a few little things too, but I can’t tell you what they are until the holidays are over.
I think a stitching question should be-” Do you know all the DMC colors by their numbers?” I sure do. I was in Walmart yesterday and I always pick up a few and I decided I needed ‘611’ and ‘612’ (browns) two colors that The Prairie Schooler patterns use. I really could have grabbed a ‘844’ too. : )

Stitching Blogger Question

Standard

Thanks to Mindy for reminding me to answer this:

Have you ever just quit a project while in the midst of it? (We’re not referring to UFOs here, rather projects that you know that you’ll never work on again.) Why? What did you do with it – throw it out, give it away, put it away?

There are a few that became so infuriating to stitch on, I packed them up. One is a Dimension kit of ocean waves that turn into galloping horses. I could finish it sometime, so it is really an UFO. The problem was that the color chart/symbols were on the other side of the chart. I’d go to change colors and lose my place! I need to get the one page copied. Why Dimensions would do this with a large chart is beyond me. Paper is cheap. I haven’t worked on it for a few years and whether or not I do is questionable.
The other things are a beagle dog I was making for a friend of my brother’s and I think the dog died, so I didn’t finish it. I may finish it and give it to my mom the dog lover. The other was a design I was doing for a friend who isn’t a friend anymore. Looking at it makes me unhappy even though it’s not a bad design. Guess they sound more like UFOs, but it’s been several years since I have put one stitch in any of them.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I just purchased the Just Cross Stitch Christmas ornament issue for 2005. It’s nice and I am happy to have all the past issues of this yearly issue. I just need to stitch more of them! I like these because of the different designers who contributed their designs, a few I have met.
My brother just sent a big box of cross stitch stuff from his thrift shops excursions down in Florida. There were several bags of DMC floss which I could always use. I had to laugh because there were about 10 skeins of this green color and several of a gold. One kit had the little ornaments all stitched up, they only needed washing. I will probably donate them for a Love Quilt. There was a nice North America animal design still in the metal hoop. I took it off, and you guessed it, there was a hoop mark! I washed and soaked it twice and it’s faded alot. I think that the stitching will cover a majority of the mark that is left. I thought that I didn’t have the floss for it, but here it was in a little bag and the colors were all nicely wrapped on cardboard spools. I don’t even do that with my own DMC. I may complete the design, I may not. I got someone else’s UFO!!! I appreciate Don thinking of me and sending me goodies once in a while.
Designing cross stitch patterns
Standard
I was playing around with my cross stitch software and I came up with this, all free handed:
I didn’t center it or put in the correct size, but this is something I think I will pursue in the colder months when I don’t have to worry about doing anything outside. You can tell it’s a mushroom, right? : ) Remember it’s a fantasy mushroom. I, of course, didn’t have time to cross stitch it. Brian got all excited (he bought me the software last year) and asked if I was going to stitch it up. I told him to think of a funny thing to do with mushrooms. I’m still waiting….
Soggy Sunday
Standard
I am still a little tired from our recent trip. Today I decided to sort through some magazines and papers that have been accumulating on the dining room table and overflowing in the magazine basket. Good thing I did this as I read that the priest from church is coming for a visitation tomorrow! I thought he was coming Tuesday. So I have to tidy up a few areas that he will see (LOL) and since I did the sorting, I can just rearrange some knick-knacks and run the vacuum around. I have a feeling that I will be the only one home here. He will probably only be here about 10 minutes, so no big deal. Maybe I’ll bake some brownies. I have until about 4 pm. We skipped the church picnic today. We haven’t gone for a few years as it’s rather boring if you don’t have kids to put on the ponies or have them do sand art.
Brian goes back to work tomorrow. I actually got him to do a little something for me. He cleaned out a few file drawers in the downstairs cabinet! Sean and I had been down in this area and he had just tossed papers in there haphazardly. He threw away a lot of my old eBay paperwork. I haven’t looked at it for years. I feel some organizational vibes coming my way!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The stitching question of the week was what was your biggest project and what was your smallest project.
I think my biggest project was a Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse design I did for my nephew when he was born. It was Mickey handing Minnie a flower. They kept that hanging up for a long time. The smallest has to be the little sampler I did when I was a new stitcher back in 1980.

Finished Charity quilt square

Standard

I had a little time before dinner to sit a spell. The luggage is pretty much packed. I need to water some flowers outside after we eat. Yesterday I planted the iris rhizomes that came. I thought a few didn’t look that great, so I will email the company to see about replacements for them.
I went to the doctor and more or less the midwife (a new lady who looks like an older version of my sister-in-law MaryAnne) said my odd complaints are due to my age. Oh great.
Anyway, here is a charity square I just completed. They are for a bird themed quilt and are baby blue birds.
