Who’s this? And the start of a new meme/share

Standard

I was looking at someone’s website (not related) and saw this photo of him when he was almost one:

I sure hope they didn’t call him by his given name of Colbert back then. Look at the fine hair and then look at his little Dockers!

Flash forward about 23 yrs and here he is with his gorgeous bride:

Did you guess it was the Phillies MVP for the World Series- Cole Hamels? He got married to Heidi Strobel back on New Year’s Eve 2006. Heidi was a contestant on Survivor the reality show (one of my favorite shows-I’ve watched every season!) when it was set in the Amazon. Incidently, Heidi turned 30 the night the Phils won the Series. To see more of Cole’s favorite photos check out his site.

I’m going to start a meme/share! I think every Sunday for now. If that doesn’t work, I’ll try another day. It will be called ‘I Recommend’. That can be anything-from food, to a book, to a tv show, it’s up to you! I had books in mind at first, then I thought I’d extend it to include more. I have to make a button for it today. I’ll have Mister Linky too! Please join in the fun. Watch for more later.

Thanks Jennifer, no, I didn’t lose weight, black is a slimming color-I ‘recommend’ it. : )

Name Game-come on play!

Standard

Only one person played so far… Thanks Caroleit made an excellent post for you on the 30th. Please go see!

It’s funny what you think about when you are either falling asleep or waking up. I thought of this a few days ago, in the a.m.

What you do:

Think of 5 celebrities who share your first, middle or last name with you (even nickname). Tell us who they are and if you have anything in common with them and/or what you admire about them. Also, find a photo of  your favorite same named celebrity to share with us!

I hope you play along and tag me if you do.

1. Diane Von Furstenberg-designer-I admire her style and styles! She was really popular in the 70s-80s, with her wrap dress being popular. In the last few months, I have seen her on Project Runway and in an American Express commercial. I like how she takes inspiration for her designs from nature.

2. Diane Sawyer-tv news woman-I like her smarts, her news stories and that she travels a lot. She was once a Junior Miss! I think knowledge is power too!

3. Diane Lane-So far she is the closest in age to me than the other Dianes. She’s been a great dramatic actress since she’s been a teen. She only has one child too.

4. Diane Keaton (favorite alert!)

Diane is  consistently wonderful in her acting roles. She has her own style and emulates it to this day. I remember loving ‘Annie Hall’ and her ‘La Dee Dahs’ with Woody Allen- but her clothes! I did wear a tie and vest a few times in the 70s because of Diane. I also am known to wear a few berets too.
5.Dian Fossey-zoologist-What she did to bring awareness to gorillas was amazing. She gave her life for them.

Honorable mentions:Dianne WiestDiane Kruger and Diahann Carroll!

From Oct. 22nd-

Got some stash in the mail today! I was so excited to get it, it took me forever to get around to opening it. When I sat down to admire it, the cat decided to take a nap on my lap!

Can you see why I was excited! Like an early birthday or Christmas present. I ordered from 1-2-3 Stitch and it arrived in less than a week. I wanted the 2008 JCS ornament issue, but got a few charts too. Enlarge to see what the smaller charts are. I rarely buy charts anymore, but I do collect The Prairie Schooler designs.

Tug at my heartstrings

Standard

Brian happened to look on the shelf on the bookcase above where I was looking and found Tug:

How I wish my grandmom had taken a photo of us together back in May, 1982! Now I have restored faith about tonight! Tug’s son Mark hung his dad’s World Series ring above his dad’s favorite bar (I think in Philly somewhere) today.

I received a Blog giveaway from Sherry over at If I Could Set My Soul Free. What a great bag! It’s pretty and roomy. I’ll get a lot of use out of it. Lucky me!

Sherry has an etsy shop (see her blog) and hand makes so many pretty pieces like this!

I just added books and a quilt square kit to my etsy shop-link on right under Artilicious Divas. Also added a few things in eBay at the top under Moonlitstitcher’s Page. I need some pocket moola!

You may be hearing from me in a few hours!

Sean’s about to leave. I think it’s too much driving for not even two days, but he seemed to need a change of scenery. I also sat down at the table with him last night to go over an article for a  difficult class. He’s been having trouble writing summaries. So we went through it and he wrote down the important points. He has to answer a few questions about it in 200 words. I think that’s what’s throwing him-condensing what he’s written to that few words. Also, he’s to write 4 drafts of the paper before the final version and hand them all in. I think he’s changing too much around and it’s getting confusing to read. I suggested he write more than 200 and keep taking some away with each draft. I think the prof wants it to see if they understand what they are reading as the articles are filled with research. He hasn’t gotten very good grades so far, I hope I helped a bit. The photo above is at a luau party he attended with the Newman group he is in. His friend in the photo is from Seattle and chose to go to school at PSU.

The angel food cake I made which was gone in a day! Glad it’s lowfat!
First ever Angel food cake

Was so bummed I missed seeing my niece cheer at Sean’s high school yesterday. She cheers for the youth football league and we weren’t sure where she was until it dawned on Sean that they were called the Titans. He looked up the website and we found out too late it was at the high school. Plus Colleen had sent me email at 6:30 yesterday morning with the address. I am not on the computer before 9 am usually. I called her cellphone, and my niece answered and said ‘Hello Aunt Dianne’. I asked where she was and she was home already at 11:15. I thought she was cheering again at noon, but she said the older girls were. I promised to try and see her cheer again and even sent her a ‘I’m sorry’ e-card.

Ok, here’s something funny…Greg Kinnear, the actor, was on Conan O’Brien’s show Friday night. He said there was a new word coined for him because of a knitting blogger lady-The Yarn Harlot! She was at the airport last year and recognized him when they were in line waiting to board. So not to be too much ‘in his face’, she took a photo with her cellphone of him from a lower angle where he wouldn’t notice. The photo is only of his wife’s suitcase and part of his shorts, so you really can’t tell if it’s him or not! LOL On her blog, she coined the low photo angle as ‘kinnearing’. Now it’s like a new slang word and was posted in the NY Times. It makes sense because ‘near’ is in there.

Sean just left, so I’m collecting myself. I was fine until Bri gave him a hug before he left for his dad’s house. It should be getting easier for me. I’m blaming it on hormones!

RIP Paul Newman

Standard

Not only was Paul Newman a great actor  (my favorite of his was Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid), he really loved kids and raised over 200 million dollars for his Hole in the Wall Gang Camp for sick kids. I thought his salad dressing and chocolates were pretty good. How cool was it to see a man his age racing cars-he started at age 70!

This website says it best:

The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp Honors the Life and Legacy of its Beloved Founder Paul Newman
He was a man of extraordinary generosity, vision, creativity and compassion. His selfless commitment to the welfare of children living with serious illnesses has been inspirational to people around the world. Twenty years ago, Paul Newman founded The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, the first in what has grown to become the world’s largest family of camps serving children with serious illnesses. The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp is part of his living legacy, and for that we remain forever grateful. His leadership and spirit can never be replaced, but he has left us with a clear course for the future.

Paul’s dream lives on in the joy, magic and healing power of Camp. What an extraordinary privilege to have shared his friendship and affection.

We’ll miss you Mr. Blue eyes.

Yeah Tina Fey!

Standard

I don’t know Tina Fey personally, but she grew up a stone’s throw away from Media, in Upper Darby, in the same county. How awesome is it to see a talented person win 3 Emmys (I think I got that correct) from this area? Alec Baldwin won for 30 Rock himself. A week or so ago, a ‘best of’ episode show had when he was role playing as Tracy Morgan’s parents during a meeting with a psychologist. It’s one of the best scenes ever——>see vod pod!!

So I did watch the Emmys. I missed all the pre-shows as I decided playing around with paper crafts was more relaxing to me. The show had a rough start where the five nominated hosts for reality shows didn’t know what to talk about. That’s pretty lame. They wasted time and first winner Jeremy Piven gave them a dig about that.

The funniest moment-when Steven Colbert came out eating prunes with co-presenter Jon Stewart (they both won) and of course he was comparing prunes to a certain presidential candidate.

And I enjoyed a skit when some of  the cast of ‘Laugh In’ did a bit announcing nominees through the old psychedelic doors as their most famous characters (yeah, I’m aging myself, but I was under 10 when this show was on) . Lily Tomlin, Joann Worley and Ruth Buzzi were perfect. The announcer-Gary Owens looked and sounded good, but Alan Sues-he was a little shaky, the poor guy.

And the guy who played Ben Franklin won an Emmy for John Adams, an HBO miniseries I didn’t see. We don’t get channels like that.

What I’ve been doing mostly this weekend is rearranging my 46 photo CDs-yes that is correct. I am going through them for Flickr and uploading ones I couldn’t add when I just had the Yahoo account. Also I’m uploading the highest resolution on ones I had downsized and want to replace as they aren’t clear.  I want to rescan some old photos of mine too. When I read on a blog that a lady from Texas lost her wedding photos, well, I didn’t want to ever lose the last 6 yrs of my life. I have tons of film photos. I don’t know if I’ll ever do all of the ones I really love, but I will eventually scan cute baby shots of Sean, etc.

Here’s hoping #4 will be lucky for the guy showing up from Dishnet. We asked that they come in the morning, but they decided to do afternoon.

<<<<<<<<<CLICK for free mammograms! They only have a few days left in their fundraiser and are just over 50%.

Stand up to Cancer telecast

Standard

I don’t know how anyone could miss this hour long show Friday, the 5th as it was on all three major networks. Maybe cancer can be cured in our lifetime. As someone who had a close call with it last year, I appreciate all the research they can do. Meryl Streep talked about how the March of Dimes was started by Eddie Cantor, on the radio, when he asked people to send a dime for polio research. And we are lucky as a vaccine was found for polio. It could happen with cancer too.

I was touched to see Patrick Swayze speak and hear James Taylor and Sheryl Crow sing ‘Fire and Rain’. Sheryl had the calcifications like I did, but hers were cancer. She looks beautiful now and her little boy Wyatt is adorable. Dana Delaney had her mammogram videotaped. The doctor had felt a large calcification-the bigger they are the better.  I had the small microscopic ones.

I went to the site and went shopping for some little things at Cafe Press. I wanted a t-shirt, but all they had were a trucker’s hat, buttons and stickers. I bought the later two for the time being.

I’m going to keep this as a sticky post (something new at WordPress-yeah),

so you can go shopping if you’d like. If I had more moola, I’d buy more. If I get a little more down the road, I’ll send some to this org.

<————–keep clicking the buttons in my sidebar! The breast cancer site is doing a fundraiser of sorts by the number of clicks they receive.

Art and cooking

Standard

I was looking through stuff as I sorted last week. This week seems to be a bust because of my back issues. The sore spots like to move around, but Advil and the heating pad are my pals. It doesn’t bother my rest, just when I am sitting a lot which isn’t good.
I found a really neat page in a landscape catalog we picked up at the Philadelphia Flower show this year. These are what I made from the one page-all these cards’ backgrounds! I know, my imagination tends to run wild. I loved her eyes in the one image of Clara Bow, so they became the focus of the card. The other lady card is indeed Clara Bow again. She was gorgeous in my opinion.

The Michelangelo prophets are from a Dover Publications sticker book. I used both Isaiah and Jeremiah on my cards then did a google search to find out that Isaiah literally put the fear of God in people and Jeremiah was know as ‘the broken hearted’ prophet. Interesting!
Here is what we had for dinner last night called Frittata Al Tonno.
Frittata Al Tonno
Found it on the Chicken of the Sea website. I wanted to use tuna, and it also has eggs (of course), zucchini, onion, basil and tomatoes-mostly fresh from our garden. The secret was to cover the pan and steam the eggs for about 5 minutes. Both guys asked if it was quiche!
And speaking of eating-on the opposite end of the spectrum, our cute little mop top and bottom moths are cannibals! I found a completely bare stem of milkweed and there was only bits and pieces of a bunch of the critters left on it. Not saying a bird or two didn’t get to them. But I am sure I haven’t seen too many of the moths around.

My mom has loved paperdolls since she’s been a little girl and has collected Tom Tierney (also from Dover Pubs) for many years. Look what Mr. Tierney just came up with, no surprise to me. I’m thinking their clothes can’t be too exciting, maybe Senator Obama’s?

And three cute little girls-two fairly famous-you know who they are (belong to B and A):

and a little girl I found on etsy-on her mom Adrianne’s store:

I photoshopped this a bit. As you can see, I live vicariously through those who have daughters. : ) I’m still hoping for a granddaughter or two someday.

Sean and I are off to BJs Wholesale Club tomorrow. I broke down and bought a membership there. Dangerous-big quantities of things-must buy-!!!!

A passing

Standard

I just read that Professor Randy Pausch from Carnegie Mellon died on the 25th. He made it past his 3 month to live diagnosis (pancreatic cancer) for almost a year. I saved his ‘last lecture’ video in my vod pod. I didn’t know he had passed until this morning. Diane Sawyer had her story on about him again last night and I just couldn’t watch it again-like I had a feeling. He was such a nice man with a loving wife and three children.

Sean and I may be taking a little drive up to Lancaster County in a few hours even though it’s hot. At least he has air.

Just learned my bro #1 pal passed away this morning

How I saw him

Standard

George Carlin 9/6/75, originally uploaded by dgans.

George Carlin passed away over the weekend at the age of 71 today. He was one of the few celebrities I got to see ‘in person’. ‘The Mike Douglas Show’ use to be taped in downtown Philadelphia, and we got to go a few times. George was on the one time, I’d say about 1974 and he was pretty clean because it was a show that aired around 4 in the afternoon.
Who else did I see on Mike’s show-Lana Turner, Anthony Newley and John Davidson! George was ‘hip’ about a lot of stuff. What a memory he had too. The entertainment show just said he was the first host on Saturday Night Live 33 yrs ago and I do remember that, I was about 15.
