Amazing Race 8 runs around Pennsylvania!

Standard

I missed the first 15 minutes of the new season of ‘The Amazing Race’ because it was usually on Wednesdays and we had ‘My Name is Earl’ on (this is rather quirky, but a little funny). I asked Sean to flip the channel and sure enough the family edition of TAR was on. They were in New York City looking for a hot dog cart that was being guarded by the 2 bald guys from Season 1.
So they find out they have to go to Washington Crossing, PA. Yes, where our founding father crossed the Delaware River. My college pal lived in near by Morrisville. Sesame Place is nearby too! So I think that most of them got lost. I just love our highways here in PA. I really liked the Black family who happened to be black. They had trouble crossing the river because of the current.
Next they went to camp out in Fairmount Park near Philly. They could see the ‘Filthydelphia’ skyline. I hope they had lots of police around. ; ) It’s near the Philly Zoo. Been to Fairmount at the Mann Music Center (several times) and my 10th high school reunion there at Memorial Hall.
Next they went to Mount Joy, PA. That’s near Lancaster and about 50 miles from here. I am bummed because we never heard anything about the show being in this area. They either had to pull a buggy with two people inside or build a shed with a water wheel. The first family crashed the buggy and disabled it and they had to then build the shed. The others who pulled the buggy had a heck of a time. 1.5 miles is further than you think.
This one family was awful. The mother is a heavy set woman who yelled at her husband and two teen sons all the time. I was hoping the Blacks would beat them to Lancaster for the pit stop, but no! So the nice family was out and that left the big mouths in!
They are headed for Gettysburg next week. I am wondering if they will go on to Ohio or DC next? Looks like an interesting race!

A neat shot of my old classmate

Standard

Thanks to my pal Julie out in California who actually got to see a filming of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition in the L.A., CA. area. She is actually in this photo but she cut herself out. : (

What is neat about this photo-Paul is wearing a t-shirt from our old school-Penncrest. I think the casting agents who were at the local mall (behind Penncrest) probably were given this to give to Paul.

Julie says he and the rest of the cast were really nice and spoke to her and the other people watching quite a bit.

EM:HE may be in this area as mentioned above, so I’d love to meet them too. Crossing fingers.

Butterfly Paradise

Standard

We have a bay window facing the backyard in our family room. The family room was the garage at one time. Why waste a big window facing the road when you can view a peaceful backyard? I have a butterfly bush planted under the window here. It’s as tall as the house and attracting a ton of butterflies. Right now I see a yellow shallowtail on it. I can’t even see the pond, but it’s nice to see the pretty purple blooms and the ‘flutterbys’.
I planted the 4 iris rhizomes yesterday and am expecting 10 more next month. My hibiscus seeds started to pop out of the pots. I planted10 and 6 are coming up. All the new plants benefited from the storm that went through here at 4 am.
I was just outside showing the guy where to pump out the septic tank. That’s country living for you though we now could get public water and sewer. Maybe someday if it becomes a problem. It’s the law to get them pumped every few years. Our toilets haven’t been flushing all the way and the shower isn’t draining that well. This should help as they pump out 1,000 gallons of waste.
I hope you saw the shows on the Titanic last night on the Discovery Channel. They were really good. Just when you think you have heard or seen everything about the Titanic, something new is unearthed. James Cameron, the director of Titanic, went down to the wreck again and had smaller robots to view parts of the ship that haven’t been seen before. They got to see the Turkish baths! The tile was still in good shape after 93 yrs! It was so neat. The other show talked about the building of the Titanic which was interesting and ‘reinacted’ very well. Five years of work for a ship that sunk in less than 3 hours.

What’s wrong with this passage…

Standard

From Morgan Spurlock’s blog-‘The climax of the season is our Binge Drinking Mom, a parent who so desperately wants her college freshmen, beer guzzling daughter to understand the ramifications of her actions that she (mom) transforms into a party girl overnight to try to teach her show her the errors of her ways. It’s powerful stuff and a great end to the series’.

Well I guess the 19 yr old girl is going to drink if she has the money to do so. Her mom becoming a binge drinker for a month didn’t even phase the girl. She said she may stop drinking if her mom ‘got killed’. How nice. What a spoiled brat. They have a lovely big home with a pool, so obviously this girl has a lot of luxuries. Guess she wants to throw her life away. She said she can hold her booze even though she passes out and doesn’t remember how she ended up where she has her head laying in the morning. I think it’s really sad. If she disfigures her pretty face in a drink related accident, maybe she will change her mind. If she has that option-the other is death.

Lancaster man becomes All time Jeopardy champion

Standard

Congrats to Brad Rutter!
From AOL news:
“Ken Jennings,”Jeopardy!” brainiac met his match this week, losing a three-day tournament of champions from the game show and a $2 million (1.58 million) prize to Brad Rutter of Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
Rutter was hardly intimidated by Jennings’ 74-game winning streak in the game show last year. He beat Jennings in all three individual games, and his final total of $62,000 (49,066) easily eclipsed Jennings’ $34,599 (27,381).”

Man, that must feel good to beat someone like Jennings. He is hardly suffering from his lost. Before the tournament, I’ve seen him in a number of tv commercials.

Reality finales…very predictable

Standard

I watch a bunch of these. I like watching ‘real’ people in predicaments and wondering how I would handle it if I was in their place. Here are the shows that have ended so far and one more I will make a prediction for.
No brainer winners:
Survivor-Tom was one of the best contestants that this show has ever had. He was like a beacon on that island from day one. How many people can kill a shark with a handmade spear? We all know that NY firemen are heroes anyway.
The Amazing Race-It looked like Rob and Amber had this win in the bag. They had gotten on a flight that would have given them an hour’s lead over the other two teams who were left. Surprise, surprise, the pilot had the jetway reattached and let Uchenna and Joyce on. U&J found the next clue much faster than ‘Ramber’ so they won the million.
The Apprentice– Last week it was clear that Kendra, the young and single real estate big cheese out shone the Mary Kay mom was Iowa, Tana (I have never met another Tana). Heck, I’m just glad a woman won. The finale was really a waste of time and rather silly.
American Idol-Sean is more of a fan of this show. I like music a lot and the last couple of winners sounded too much like other famous singers. You know who I mean (Luther and Macey right?) I predict Bo Bice will win. I also see Bo and Carrie, the other finalist as a couple. Think I am a little psychic?

Laura Leno Bush

Standard

So everyone is talking about how the first lady was the highlight of a dinner on Saturday night for the White House Correspondents’ Association. She ‘interrupted’ the President and proceeded to charm the crowd. Her timing was great-telling how ‘Mr Excitement’ was in bed by 9pm so she watched ‘Desperate Housewives’.
I like Laura a lot. She reminds me of the Donna Reed character Mary in ‘What a Wonderful Life’ who was also a librarian at one time. And did you know she comes from a family of Democrats? This is so interesting to me for some reason. I know I would never change my political views for anyone. Some women vote exactly the same way as their husbands do. I think deep down Laura is a ‘leaner’ toward ‘the other party’.
Anyway here’s another blurp from the article I was reading:
Mrs. Bush took another jab at the president as he announced a preservation award being given to Bolduc Historic Properties, which maintains three houses in a French Colonial settlement in St. Genevieve, Mo., along the Mississippi River.

“The restoration of the 18th Bolduc House has attracted visitors from around the country …” Bush said.

“Eighteenth century,” Mrs. Bush said, correcting the president.

“You’ve become a comedian and an editor,” Bush deadpanned.

Seems like I’m blogging alot, I know…

Actually I’m getting it out of my system as I probably won’t be near a computer for 4 days from the 6th-9th because of our Florida trip. We can’t wait! Brian is a bit anxious as he hasn’t been on a plane since 1989. I am praying my sinuses will be clear and I won’t have to use the bathroom too much on the plane. And damn that ‘Lost’ show! Funny how you worry about dumb things. Hey John Travolta, come get us! (he’s a pilot too). I was just suffering so much with my nose and throat today. My nose feels like it’s closing up and it’s burning. Flonase is helping, but I bet I’ll have to take a dose of Sudafed tomorrow. Crossing fingers.
Watched one of the best contestants get the boot tonight on ‘Survivor’. Here she’s a local girl from Glenolden, PA. Brian just happen to work in the same town for 13 yrs. Bet she knows the company he worked for too! She’s a ‘Prendy’ girl, went to the burb Catholic girl’s high school. I know other grads from that school (one was in my wedding party). Pretty neat. I usually pick up a local accent, but she didn’t seem as ‘Philly’ as Paul from Extreme Makeover:Home Edition.
~~~~~~~~~~
I didn’t plant outside, too windy. I got hung up repotting indoor plants. I did about 10 plants from Prayer Plants to Christmas cacti before I ran out of potting soil. I have another bag outside though. I’d like to combine the leftover cacti into one big pretty pot. They are one of my favorite plants. I also have a windowsill full of African violets. I do have a green thumb, don’t I? Wish me well with my sinuses. : )
Winter wonderland or PITA nor’easter?
Standard
A little of both I think? Sean’s school was cancelled and it didn’t start really snowing until late morning. Brian came home a bit early, but said the worst roads were around here.We don’t know what’s happening tomorrow, but with all the back roads we have, I doubt he’ll go in again. It was like a blizzard tonight.
I am really pooped from yesterday. It was a nice day and so good to do and see something different. Today Sean vacuumed for me and I made him apple streusel muffins and beef stew. We had stopped at a specialty food store last night so I could get some dinner food. Their beef was definitely better. I have been adding parsnips and turnips and the stew is so tasty.
Before grabbing the food, we had grabbed some dinner (we had to wait) at Ruby’s Diner a new place in the same shopping center. It’s mostly a burger place, but it has the decor of an old diner and the waitresses are dressed in cute red striped uniforms and the little hats. I had a turkey club on a French style roll with fat slices of turkey, bacon and avocado. Sean had shrimp tacos and Brian had a burger.
I watched the Oscar’s last night, mainly to see if Jamie Foxx would win for ‘Ray’ and he did! His speech was excellent. JF trivia-his real name is Eric Bishop.
Beyonce (has the same maiden name as me) Knowles was beautiful both in voice and dress and looks! Very nice that she sang three songs, but what about the Spanish one that won? I was pulling for ‘I Believe’. Frank Bielec said that celebrities are so ‘not real’ with their thin bodies, expensive jewels and gowns that they don’t own and I tend to agree. We need more real people like Hillary Swank who remembers about her struggle as a young teen in a trailer park.
So I watched the end of ‘The Bachelorette’ and Jen didn’t pick anyone! I wasn’t really surprised as she had such a hard time picking out the ring and dress and bawling her head off to her friends. Why did she do this show so soon after her breakup with Andrew Firestone? I think she is pining for him or doesn’t want to get hurt again. I liked Jerry, he looked like a guy I liked in high school-hey Michael B!!! Hope Jen finds love. If she couldn’t find it in 26 men, she may be a hopeless case. Sorry to say that.
