The clean up begins

Standard

I was outside raking on Monday. It was close to 60 here and a bit breezy. My circular iris garden was all overgrown with field grass (you’ll see the pear tree in the background which won’t be looking that green this year). I am confessing to you all that I will mulch that garden this year! It would probably save me a ton of work. I have little box hedges around the perimeter of this garden and two or three of them are missing. I think Bri cut them down with the mower! So they will have to be replaced eventually. I also got out most of the old sunflower, zinnia and cosmos stalks next to the irises. I have a big blister from my raking- I should wear work gloves!

Made little turkey meatloaves and oven fried red potatoes-inspired by Everyday Food magazine. Yep, I was thinking about my post below and handled the turkey gingerly. : )

I’m on a roll with ATCs. I made 9 of them in the last few days. Making some gifts helps. Cutting up new books and having pretty papers is also a bonus I received a giftie ATC from Tootie over at <—-Honey Girl Studios (see above).  Tootie has lots of her St Paddy’s and Easter art for sale right now.

I watched the show on the Royals last night. I have to say that I just adore William and Harry. They turned out so nice, their mom would be proud. And I watched them grow up as they are only a few years older than Sean.

Great Grammy program

Standard

It seemed like it was more of 3.5 hours of a musical extravaganza than an awards show this year. It was the 50th anniversary, and they did a wonderful job of entertaining us for all that time. The View just showed the highlight of the evening-Herbie Hancock, Lang Lang and a full orchestra doing their rendition of ‘Rhapsody in Blue’. Loved seeing Beyonce booging with 68 yr old Tina Turner. And the opening number with Alicia Keyes singing along with old film footage of Frank Sinatra was awesome too.

I spent the time stitching the zebra, who seems ok now, not a stitch off or anything. I am also clipping magazines-and being really selective about what I am clipping. I am looking for images for my art cards/collages and some recipes and craft ideas. I happened upon an article about thyroid issues. I was told I didn’t have a problem, but one of the woman had ‘normal’ readings and had 3 or 4 different opinions before a specialist said she had a thyroid problem. I think mine gets wonky maybe? I plan to have a physical after Brian gets his bloodwork results back. Frankly, I am nervous as my nerves have been tested a bit these last few months.

My brother had a meltdown about my mom’s house yesterday. I knew he would sooner or later as he is trying to do too much in too short a time. I was angry to hear he threw an nice tall boy kind of desk away. I had spent a long time scrapping paint off it years ago. It’s made out of an unusual wood too. I am so glad I got my great aunt’s hutch out of there years ago! I love antiques. I wish I could help more, but I can’t lift. I can sort, I can take stuff to the Goodwill. I can certainly dust and clean. I think he needs to take a break and do something he likes.

I’m probably going out later to mail some books. I got a half.com sale too-probably a book I had listed for over two years-I need to find it!

And it was about 10 degrees out this morning and around 2 where Sean is. Speaking of Sean, he needs to get his housing issue settled soon. I need to proof a paper for him too.

The Bucket List

Standard

Since two of my pals Pea and Zoey did this, I thought I’d play along. Anyone else who wants to do theirs, go ahead!

There are no rules except to give your list of five things you want to do before you die, based on the movie “The Bucket List“.

  1. I’d like to see my only child happy in his life with a good job, wife and children, preferably 3 granddaughters, but I’ll take what I get. : )
  2. See more of the USA, especially the west coast where my paternal family lives in Oregon. Funny, but I feel a need to see it!
  3. Have a genuine crafting area where I can craft to my heart’s content! Maybe design a big selling item.
  4. Volunteer more as an older adult. I use to do this at Sean’s elementary school and church, but fell out of it.
  5. Meet my online friends, though I’ve met 3, but there are so many more I’d like to meet. ; )

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Our internet has been acting flukey, and I had to call Comcast for a ping or whatever they call it. I was in the middle of writing the above meme and off it went. The tech said it sounded like a local problem, not our system.
Woke up about 5 am with a terrible sore left thumb/wrist area. I used Icy Hot (that stuff is worth it’s weight in gold) and it helped. I did wrap it up a little while ago. I couldn’t find the wrist bandage, but one for every other joint! I think I lifted something heavy in a funny way as my scar was hurting too. I bet it was my purse!
Whoopi Goldberg wants to lose weight. Even though she weighs less than me, we have almost the same measurements, though my chest is 2 inches bigger, but hey girl, I believe in support garments! The guy that is helping her believes in resistant training over aerobics and of course he was showing those band things you put around your foot and pull with your hand, something I can’t do right now! I plan to go for a little walk soon.
New Specs
Standard
I got my new glasses today and I really like them! They are more of a rectangular shape, a brownish pink and have some neat swirlies on each corner. I didn’t have Brian take a photo of me yet as I wasn’t ready to pose-ha!
Television was actually good tonight for a change. Survivor is back with a twist-Fans vs. Favorites. I guess I can say that I wasn’t surprised that the less than favorite John Dalton aka Johnny Fairplay almost begged to be voted off first. What a piece of work he is! I think he just wanted a little screen time so people would remember him and give him a job. Then the second week of Lost aired-gee, I’m really confused now. They keep hopping back and forth or forth and back. One week doing fast forwards and the next week doing flashbacks. I go on tribe.net to the Lost group and see what everyone there thinks.
Then there is a new program called Eli Stone that follows Lost, so it has a good lead in audience. So far I am enjoying it and it’s star Jonny Lee Miller. For the life of me I knew I had heard that name before and here he is the ex of Angelina Jolie! And he is British and hiding his accent too. He has the biggest blue marble eyes. : )
Stitchingwise, I picked up a UFO ‘Giggles in the Snow’ to take a few days break from the zebra that still isn’t matching up quite right. I’m about to leave it be as it really looks fine and the little boy isn’t going to know that I was a stitch off or whatever. It took me a few minutes to acclimate to where I was with the little snow angel boy, but I got it. I’d like to finish that one up and soon.
I’m trying some multivitamins and calcium, so crossing fingers with those. I may take them alternating days, so my tummy won’t complain. I remember when I was pregnant, I took my prenatal vitamins every other day. This is all thanks to Dr. Oz on Oprah.
Telly stuff
Standard
I’m glad to see at least some of my old shows are coming back on like ‘Lost’ and ‘Survivor-fans vs faves’. Last night I flipped on TLC and watched ‘Jon and Kate plus 8’, the couple from the Hershey, PA area with a set of twins and sextuplets! Every time they show Kate in the video with her large watermelon size tummy, I cringe. Lucky for her she got a major tummy tuck-because of this show! A plastic surgeon’s wife saw her show her post belly and she wanted to help. I really like Kate a lot-she has a ton of personality and I like how she teases Jon and of course he teases her back. BUT, how cute are their 8 kids! Too cute!
The Gosselins at nearby Dutch Wonderland
I just read ‘their story’ and they are religious like the following family.
After that show, the Duggar family special came on. It highlighted the birth of child number 17! Oh my! They live in a huge fairly new home (it better be huge!) and they are debt free. Now how do they do that? I don’t think the oldest boy is going to college, though I’m not sure. But they are super religious, super musical (they play piano and violin!) and super organized. I was checking out the recipe page of their online site-not healthy eating there folks-i.e.-tater tot casserole! Their other specials were highlighted and their RV trip to California was cool except when all of them except 3 had to use a barf bag while flying over the Grand Canyon in a small plane. I guess they don’t believe in Dramamine.
Tonight I watched a tattoo show after I was on the computer. That’s it.
I did get to Trader Joe’s (a grocery store with more healthful and organic foods) and wasn’t as impressed as I am by the one in my hometown. Bri just told me the Acme down the road is closing-hello-empty space-for a Trader Joe’s! (or Whole Foods).
I’m laying low today (written actually yesterday) as it’s going to be cold and windy. I have enough to do around here. Too much tidying at mom’s so put me not in the mood to clean. I am wanting to stitch the freebie from a few years back for Groundhog’s Day since I love that Bill Murray movie and it’s a big deal around PA. Now where is the chart? It looks like this:
Winding down
Standard
Ever have a busy day and you know you should be getting shut eye, but the adrenaline just keeps pumping? I am getting there, very tired and yawning. Wednesday I made 4 kinds of cookies-Butter flavored Crisco Chocolate Chips (the best recipe), 7 layer cookies (from a box mix-so skimpy, I’ll make more), Russian Tea cakes and last but not least, Rum Raisin Cheesecake squares. Two were in a pan, so not too hard to make. My CCs are a little brown, I swear the first batch gets that way. Today I’m trying new recipes…involving ice cream caramel sauce, macadamia nuts, peanuts and peanut butter cookie dough-not in one cookie recipe! I have a ton of Reese’s peanut butter cups I should sub for Hershey kisses in that blossom recipe.
I’ve been watching ‘Clash of the Choirs’ as I’ve been in so many. It would have been awesome to be in the Patti LaBelle one! I sing soprano, but I can sing lower if I wanted to. : )
Wish my friend Barbara well, she may be welcoming her little kiddle into the world today! Good luck!
Takin’ it easy
Standard
After waking up at 5:30 and barely getting back to sleep before I got up at 7 for my pre-admissions, I am pretty tired. Why you have to get in there so early when you haven’t fasted is beyond me. Poor Bri looks so tired too. I wrote about it in ‘me stuff’ tab above.
So does anyone watch ‘Dancing with the Stars’? I only started watching the past few years. I wanted to see how Marie Osmond, who is my age did. She’s in the top 3! If she had a huge flow of fans call in last night, then she will probably win. I think it’s going to be the race car driver Helio Castroneves and Julianna, but I like Mel B.-The Spice Girls and Maks myself. That Maks is a ‘twinkle toes’! : )
I’m going to take an early shower, get all snuggly and enjoy the finale tonight. If you don’t hear from me tomorrow, you’ll know why, but I’ll try to get online later in the day.
Take care!
This thing about chicken and then hoarding
Standard
Make note to self-do not buy the big package of thick chicken breasts anymore. Although you pounded the last two pieces, and must I say with great vigor, they were too thick and had that funny chicken taste-almost like an uncooked taste. Buy some regular olive oil as suggested by Giada DeL. and use the EVOO for salad dressing. Throw a hunk of butter in there too. OR buy the skinny cutlets, yeah that’s the ticket.
Here’s dinner last night with the hunky chicken. Martha’s Stewart’s Everyday Food magazine, Dec. ’07 issue Chicken with olives, rice, spinach and raisins. I didn’t have the golden raisins as suggested in the recipe. I think another kind of white wine would be tastier too:
Chicken with olives
Let’s talk about the Oprah show that will air the second part later on today. It’s about Hoarders. I am one to a degree, but I keep most of my hoarded stuff in the basement and most of my boxes are see-through plastic ones-and there is a lot of those. It’s spilling over a little in the bedrooms and family room. Mostly books. But the lady on the show had 15 dumpsters full of stuff in her house! Every room and the basement was jam-packed with stuff from her daily shopping sprees. Now if you know me, I talk about my mom having a similar, but not as drastic problem with too much stuff in her house. Like the lady on the show, her younger grandkids haven’t been inside her house for months, maybe a year or more. I try to help her, but it just gets bad again. She is always sorting, but never tossing. Her favorite phrase now is ‘I need to buy more Rubbermaid containers’!! She buys the big monster ones in green or whatever and you can’t see what’s inside. She has them taking up room in two bedrooms that she can’t even get in. I said tonight, and this really applies to all of us who are holding on to stuff, that she is 77 and better get real. Everything will be tossed in the long run. And I know deep down she really wants to use watercolors or sketch or embroider and live a less stressful life. I see how she will sit here and do those things when she visits. I bet she has dozens of started embroidery kits. Stuff is a replacement for an empty nest. Shopping is definitely a problem too. She was so proud that she was staying out of the department stores, but now she goes to the Goodwill to shop! This is hard to deal with as Brian’s dad hasn’t really gotten rid of too many things of Bri’s mom’s and she’s been gone over 11 yrs now.
I’m here…
Standard
…let’s see…laundry….not too bad since there are only two of us. Finishing the Thunderbird for Love Quilts. Messing with paper crafts. Finding the fall and Halloween decorations and doing a little decorating outside the front door. And listing on eBay-my day so far. I’m glad I got the food shopping out of the way yesterday, though the store smells made me a little queasy. Still playing touch and go with my tummy, though I will say I’m not watching what I eat. Bri took me out for ice cream at Bruster’s last night. Now that place smelled heavenly as they are baking the waffle cones while we waited. It was a huge brownie (naughty) and some ice cream and lots of whipped cream. It seemed to coat my tummy. I’ve had this problem in the past and I think it can be stress related too. I have to watch food coloring too. Ginger is really good for what is ailing you. Even Bri said he’s been a bit off. It could be the change in the weather, though it’s in the 80s today.
I did watch Pushing Daisies and it was a bit quirky. It will be interesting to see what happens each week. I was trying to think what movie it reminded me of-I’d say ‘James and the Giant Peach’.
Thanks so much
Standard
I really appreciate your lovely comments about my two new framed pieces. I want to hang them up tomorrow so they won’t be damaged just leaning against the entertainment center.
I am feeling better. I think the fish oil I was taking wasn’t agreeing with me. Bummer. I guess we’ll have to eat more salmon or other Omega-3 rich foods.
Not too much going on. I was like in slow motion today. I did a few cleaning up chores, but I am concentrating on finishing up the ’57 Thunderbird by at least the 7th as it’s due on the 15th. I’m not crazy about deadlines, but they really get me going. I also made the small gift for MarJean who guessed the squash count for our garden. I need to assemble that and send it on it’s merry way. It turned out cute and a bit whimiscal.
I’ve also been watching some of the new shows-some kinda silly like the Caveman show though they had some good lines. I want to see ‘Pushing Daisies’ to see what that is all about. My mom and I agreed that ‘Private Practice’ with Kate Walsh and Tim Daly is really good (I really like TD).
Hope all is well with my blogging friends. : )
And added a little later…Pea had her desktop up, so here is mine. I use mainly my own collages. This one is of little gardening girls. Switched to Halloween!
