It’s nice to be home, but of course next Friday we’ll be in central Penna. to help Sean with his move in at PSU. Sean did most of the driving over the last three days. He said he needs to ‘get use to it’ since it’s about 160 miles one way to PSU.
Day 1-It was smooth sailing and we stopped off at the rest stop in Smyrna. This time I was looking for the freebie literature for my art projects. They had quite a few of them. The people working there were watching me, but didn’t say anything. I even got a neat NYC book. We got to Rehoboth Beach in a jiffy, but the traffic was backed up which we sat in for 20 minutes for so. We went to our favorite sandwich shop there called ‘The Arena’. It’s not like it’s name, a rather small hole in the wall with mile high sandwiches. I got chicken salad and actually took the second half apart to eat the filling out of it. Sean did the same with his tuna, but Bri ate his entire sandwich. I swear when that man is on vacation, he eats to his heart’s content. I wanted to go in a cute gift shop and sent them to the bookstore. I got a cute journal with a leaf cover and little handmade sandals as a cover decoration. I went to the bookstore and no guys! Here they had gone to the bookstore way up near the boardwalk. I had to get a bathing suit cover up and found a long sleeveless t-shirt style and got a freebie decal for the front. It was hot walking around and we had a 5 minute walk to the van, which is a long walk for R. Beach.
We got to the Atlantic Coastal Inn which sits in front of the old Fenwick Island lighthouse. This was taken from outside our room.
Directly near the lighthouse are trailers, a little tacky to have near this historic place. The only downfall was that we had to cross over the wide and highly traveled highway to get to the beach. The place last year was on that side of the road. We went to the beach for about an hour as the wind was like 25-30 mph, so you felt like you were going to get blown away.
The water was nice after you got use to it. I don’t go swimming, but Bri and Sean do. We went to an Italian place for dinner and had to wait a while. We decided on pizza because of the big lunch. Afterwards, we went to the Country Store where I got a variety of fudge and jams. Sean wanted to drive all the way down to the inlet area of Ocean City (140 blocks) and cross the bridge to an outlet area (HA-I used inlet and outlet in the same sentence!) We had to wait about 20 minutes for the bridge to close. The outlets were a bust-the bookstore was gone and we got there too late to really look in any stores. Sean was happy to get ‘Dippin’ Dots’ ice cream. He’s still a kid in that respect.
The next day we went the same place where we went to breakfast last year and sat at the same table (without telling the hostess even). Later we went to the beach again. Still a bit windy, but hot. It got overcast and started to rain. I haven’t been on the beach for years when we got rained on. When I was little we got caught in a torrential downpour down in Wildwood, NJ and that scared me. We left and hung out a bit in our room. It was too humid to really do anything. We went out to ‘our big dinner’ at Harpoon Hannah’s. It was right down the road and thank goodness we got there fairly early. Sean and I had lobster tails (3 each!)
and Bri had swordfish. It was pretty good. After dinner the guys went to find a car museum place and couldn’t and decided to play miniature golf. I got some down time and read up on Lewes, DE. a little town down the road that I hadn’t been to for a while. I wanted to see the actual town, not where you get on the ferry to go to Cape May, NJ, across the bay. We did that when I was a kid and I was seasick for like 3 hours when we got home.
On the last day we went to breakfast again and headed for the Shipwreck Museum. The bottom is a store that sells hermit crabs and lots of souvenirs. They do a great job with the free museum. I asked the woman there if I could take photos and she said yes. I’ll make a slideshow of the photos from there, but here’s a sneak peek:
We checked out and headed for the Rehoboth Beach outlets. Sean wanted to go to Old Navy. It was crowded and the clothes weren’t that great. We didn’t stay long and headed for Lewes. We drove down to the beach area. It’s not huge, but you can see down the shoreline and we saw a few lighthouses in the distance. We headed to where a lightship was and got out and took a few photos. We found the Zwaanendael Museum,
erected in 1931 to commemorate the founding of the town by the Dutch back in 1631, it’s 300th anniversary. It’s an unusual building. All the parking was taken, so Sean sat in the van while I went around and took some photos. I did manage to get one of a cross stitch sampler inside.
I really like Lewes. It’s a Victorian town and on the water! There are some retirement places there too. Hmmm! We headed to Dover, DE where my favorite bookstore is located-Atlantic warehouse. I tried to be chosey and concentrated on scrapbooking books and gift items. We headed home after an hour and stopped off at Wendy’s for an early dinner. Cos was glad to see us.
Off to eat lunch and then pick a ton of ripe tomatoes. It’s a gorgeous day here, a little cool and no humidty. I’ve already been outside for over an hour, most of that time with the cat.
I got my Cafepress.com rose t-shirt and it’s pretty. I’ll have Sean take a photo of me in it soon.

I just got back from the eye doctor. What I expected-dry eyes and allergies. My lashes were a bit droopy, but he said not a problem. I saw yet another rather new doctor(my dentist is fairly a newbie). He got out of his gleaming pearl white Cady while I got out of my ’96 fire engine red Windstar. He held the door open for me, etc. I didn’t know he’d be checking out my eyes a few minutes later. He was very sweet and made me feel calmer. So I have to get Panatol (I got a sample) and some OTC drops to keep my eyes moist. That’s that.
I’m taking a break for a few days. Here’s a reminder. I hope to take lots of photos.
We decided to help Sean move into his dorm next month. We originally were going to take a run up there at the end of this month and then he was going to fly solo in August. I just couldn’t see him doing all that, though we’ll have two cars heading there instead of one. When I moved in the dorm way back when, I had my mom and grandmom to help me. So he went to book a hotel room on campus and couldn’t get one. We have to drive 12 more miles and stay in a Holiday Inn in a small town up there. I’m glad we got that room!
And next month we are headed back to Fenwick Island, DE for a few days at this quiet beach community. I may bring along my mom if she is able to travel. She’s gotten herself in a BIG stew and I sure hope she can get out of it with the help of her kids and the friend that lives with her. I still think she needs to think about selling her house and moving into an assisted living place. They seem to be sprouting up all over the place. There are 4 nice ones I can think of within an hour of mom’s house. Her car is also on the blink. She was driving it with a bum air conditoner compressor and my brother the mechanic (who was away all last week) said it could have caught fire! She is also getting a new frig, and I plan to go on Wednesday to see what I can move out of the way so the delivery guy has room to breeze in and out of there quickly
I actually picked up the Nicholas Sparks book I put down months ago. I think it’s a bit wordy, but now that there is a new conflict, think I’ll finish it up. So many books, so little eye power. My brain is foggy and my eyes hurt today. Brian cut the grass over the weekend and all those catkin flowers from the chestnut trees are breaking down and I know they are getting to Bri and my sinuses.
I went outside to check out the tomatoes and pulled some weeds. I gave that up quickly as the humidity was making me sweat bullets. My coleus experiment is still going on. I have now planted 4 baby coleus in my one shade garden. I’m curious to see how well they do. To me they are plants that like pots, like geraniums.
Rory, from the Next Food Network Star show has me on her mailing list and I got an email to ask me to vote for her. I checked out how many people she sent it too-there must be 100s-I sure hope I don’t start getting lots of undesirable mail. Speaking of ‘that’ show-I can’t believe what happened last night. It’s Jag and Rory as the final two. Then they find out that Jag lied about being a culinary school graduate and serving in Afghanistan. He withdraws and now it’s Amy and Rory! I read where Rory is being compared to Rachael Ray- I can see that. Amy’s more like the Barefoot Contessa. I think both stand a fair chance of winning. I didn’t even know Susie the judge was expecting (she had a big belly last night!)
1st veggies of the garden-a Roma tomato and a green pepper though Bri said the pepper was on the plant when he bought it (cheater!)
We left here about 10:15 on the 22nd thinking we’d get to NYC in 3 hours. We arrived about 2:30-3:00 but we had stopped at a Wendy’s and a Big Lots in a small town. Our mistake was relying on Mapquest. I know, they have to generalize their directions, but I-295 was not a good way to go as it veers off to Trenton, NJ and you can easily get lost, which we did. We went through the Lincoln Tunnel (it’s weird knowing you are going under water) and when we were at the other end we weren’t sure where the directions wanted us to go. We should have made an immediate left but went up a street and made another left-the directions were useless until we asked where 42nd St was (thank you officer). So the next problem was the cabs, people walking in front of us and people double parking. I had to call to ask where the garage was as it wasn’t listed on the hotel’s website. Poor Sean had to go to the bathroom for an hour but wouldn’t get off in front of the hotel when we had to go around the block again. When we finally pulled into the garage, they told us to ‘take everything you need’ as you aren’t allowed to go back to your vehicle again. That was a mad scramble!
The hotel was built around 1960 and called ‘The Summit’. Judy Garland was there when it opened. I happen to love her and I thought that was awesome trivia. It’s called The Doubletree Metropolitan now. The room had only two double beds (why not queens?) a desk chair, desk area and one other padded chair, a flat screen tv and internet hookup which Sean utilized a few times and a small bathroom. It also had a fridge where you could chose something and had a few seconds to put it back or you have to pay for it. We had our own snacks.
We ventured out around five to go eat as there were plenty of restaurants in the general area. We chose an Italian restaurant called San Martin’s. It took a while to get dinner. I chose a chicken in a mustard/mushroom sauce. That was good, but the veggies weren’t -corn and peas and some weird looking sliced potatoes (like the kind in a can!). The guys had pasta.
We walked 8 blocks that night-not a wise choice for me at least. That’s when we saw St. Patricks and Rockefeller Plaza/center. When we went in the huge NBC store, I really felt drained and we started walking back. Needless to say, we took cabs a few times.
Cab drivers are careless, unfriendly drivers with short fuses. The first cab we took was to the ship port. I showed the driver the address and he got us there fine, though it was a fast and crazy ride.
We start to walk up to the elevator to the pier and there were Karin and Michael standing there! What a coincidence as we were one of the first to arrive. It was a great moment to meet her and her sweet guy. We followed them up to the check in where we left our driver’s licenses. They we went to the waiting area and waited from like 1o:30 to almost 12! The ceremony was to take place at 12:30 and the couple weren’t even dressed yet! First we had to go through a metal detector and right before we went on board, we had our hands sprayed with alcohol. The three of us went out on the deck and took a few photos. The wind was kicking up a lot and I had forgotten hair spray! I do love those photos though.
The ceremony was about 20 minutes with a Lutheran minister who I think was an assistant to the main minister of NYC. (He didn’t say Karin’s name correctly-more like Kareen during the ceremony). Michael and his dad came in and he looked very handsome in his white tux. Brian also wore white way back in 1984, but he had tails and an ascot where Michael had a suit style jacket and a bow tie. Her niece Emily walked down the aisle (bridesmaid) first and then her sister-in-law Marissa who was the Maid of Honor. They were already dressed. Karin came in a few minutes later (what speedy dressers the two of them were) and she looked so gorgeous in her satin gown with rhinestones on the bodice. She carried a silk flower white and red bouquet. I captured a good shot of her mom looking at her. Speaking of her mom, it was so nice to meet her, her husband Ron, Karin’s dad and his wife Kathy and Michael’s family. I had nice chats with both Michael’s aunt who happen to be an Early Childhood Education instructor in Fort Myers, Fl (I have an AAS in ECE) and a co-worker named Fran who thought of Michael as her ‘adopted son’. Fran, a country girl from North Carolina, didn’t seem to enjoy the gourmet lunch we had. I think we were all stumped as what to chose. Karin is getting her degree in culinary arts in December and chose some different dishes. I enjoyed what I had as did Brian and Sean. They really made sure we had our fill. I regret looking at the chocolate raspberry wedding cake and only tasting it. I was stuffed.
So it was all over way to fast. We had to leave the ship at three. I gave Karin a wedding card with a few Art Trading Cards I made for them and also a birthday card for Michael who is having a birthday tomorrow. We received a CD of their favorite Love Songs as a wedding favor.
When we were walking across the road to the taxi stop, that’s when the van driver was so rude to me.
That night we went to Times Square. It was mobbed! I am not a crowd person and I am not crazy about people who are ranting and raving about God. Not crazy about seeing a half naked girl (no top on, just pasties) getting money for drawing attention to herself.
I was impressed by the 3 story tall Virgin Record store. I have never quite seen a place like it before. Sean enjoyed seeing the outside of the MTV studios too. After seeing this area, we happen to venture back to Rockefeller Center. I was glad as I wanted to buy some kind of souvenir as I hadn’t bought anything yet. I bought a Saturday Night Live est. 1975 shirt as I was in the building where it’s been filmed for the last 32 yrs. I have watched it from the beginning (the best years were in the beginning). I also bought a night shirt with the ‘Today’ show logo all over it. I did take a photo of these but I deleted it by mistake.
We grabbed a cab back to the hotel and ordered a snack and headed for our room. That night I slept like a log as I was told I sawed wood all night. The night before was a joke! The noises outside (and we were 10 floors up) went on all night. I felt my wood cutting adventures in the morning as my throat was so dry. The air conditioning was fine, but it was so dry. We decided to get a nice breakfast and went to the same place where we grabbed our snack the night before. We took a cab to St. Patrick’s Cathedral and attended Mass. We sat about 8 or so rows from the front on the right. Cardinal Egan officiated the televised service. Both Sean and I were feeling a little overwhelmed in there, but settled down. There were police officers in the front of the church and next to the doors. We were glad that we were able to go here. It’s one of the biggest cathedrals in the world.
When we left, people were sitting all over the steps that wind around the building. We noticed the police were there and had put up barricades. I heard a girl say something about a gay parade that was going on soon. We decided to leave for home then to avoid the traffic and crowds.
After we got the car, we pulled out and again the directions failed us. We were told to turn right on 50th and couldn’t. But the parade hadn’t started yet! We turned down the next street and started looking for 42nd. We had to wind around a road under a building and ended up in the 30s. We were stopped at a light and I saw a cabbie and all I said to him was Lincoln Tunnel. He said to take the next street all the way to 9th and it was right there! What luck! We were high fiving it! I got to see Fashion Ave (would love to shop there sometime). The traffic leaving was a bit heavy going through the tunnel, but we did well and only had stop and go traffic a few times on the NJ turnpike. We stopped and ate lunch and got home before 4 which was fine. The cat was glad to see us, though a little hoarse in voice.
All in all, it was an interesting experience. I want to go back and see the Empire State building, Central Park and do some shopping. Next time I would stay outside of the city and grab a bus in (someone told me she did this). Sounds like a good plan. I was glad to get home to the peace and quiet, but I wasn’t use to it!
This was outside the NBC store at the GE building in Rockefeller Plaza where Saturday Night Live and Conan O’Brien’s show is filmed. I wanted a ‘flower shot’ which Bri thought was funny, but these hydrangea looked so nice! Click this photo to see the entire pot! I think my hair and new top look nice, but dang I look tired! I should take off my glasses, but then you would see ‘nose rest’ indentations. Sean looks cute especially in that hug his ma position.
Tonight, after the NBC news, they showed an outdoor shot under the red letter headline ticker and I thought-well that’s where I stood last night!
I’ll keep them coming, though I should do a slide show…maybe I’ll surprise you.
We had an awesome day yesterday! I’ll write more tomorrow as we got in a few hours ago and are tired. Karin and Michael are so sweet and I feel like I’ve known her IRL for years even though we just met. Unfortunately, my ‘inside’ photos of the wedding didn’t turn out too well, but Karin said there will be a website of the photographer’s collection. The photographer had a similar camera to us and said because of being inside and with the white clothing, something needed to be adjusted on our camera. The ship was gigantic! You’ll see the photos of us before the wedding took place. We had a gourmet 4 course meal starting with a crab cake salad, then a choice of appetizer, main course and dessert. I’m sure Karin will have a more detailed description as that is her thing being a chef in training. I had lobster/pumpkin bisque-really different and delicious and steak with peppercorn crust as my main meal. Here are some photos with more to come!
