Flying the coop

Standard

Sean was online picking out dorms for the fall semester at Penn State. He’ll be a junior and will be at University Park campus in the middle of PA about 3-4 hours from here. Gulp-a college ‘junior’ already! I can’t fathom it. He had to sign up for Chemistry this semester as he would be below the 60 credits he needs to transfer. He has to get up at the crack of dawn, but home by 1 pm. He’ll have to take a couple of classes this summer. I had a feeling taking a few semesters of only 4 classes would catch up with him. His stomach has been a little funny tonight. Guess he has a lot to think about.

I went down to my mom’s today. I tried to fix the belt on her fairly new vacuum, but it broke again. The brush part is broken-one of the ends of it was missing. I went to a vacuum store around the corner from her and they wanted $25 for a brush. I told them I could get a new one, an entire vacuum for $30-35 at Walmart-so there! We dropped off stuff at the Goodwill and went inside to look around. Mom is not allowed to buy clothes (in my presence anyway, but she better cut it out). I found a few little things for Easter and eBay. When we were leaving, I noticed a lady had bought something I dropped off, a pinball machine of Sean’s. It’s not everyday you see who acquires your discarded items. I have a little surprise for one of my online pals and will mail it to her soon. It’s a Goodwill find and I know she’ll like it. I’m not telling. We went to the nearby mall and had a nice pasta dinner and shopped in Macy’s as I had some credit on a gift card. Mom went and bought a top behind my back when I was undies shopping (no short task)-she’s bad!

Sitting here anxious

Standard

I’ve heard nothing about my uncle’s operation. The poor man (he’ll be 84 in June) has been through so much this past year. He’s got a lot of spunk like his mom did.

~Update-My uncle had his operation about 2 this afternoon. Looks like he’ll have to go in the rehab home again which cost him so much. Mom said he sounded ok, but groggy.

I did take a photo of my acquired JoAnn goodies:

I especially like the trees with the button and spools for bases. They aren’t straight up and down, but that adds to the cuteness of them. The other things are basically natural looking ornaments.

Sean went back to classes today. He only has to get up early 3 days out of 5-smart thinking. His first class is at 1. He’s a little nervous, but he’ll get back in the groove again.

Run around

Standard

Sean and I decided to go down to my Mom’s and to also drop off my brother Ken’s birthday gift (his b/d was on the 8th). So we got there and Mom was just beat. She is getting herself in a terrible stew over her impending cataract surgery coming up on the 25th. She isn’t eating well and since her shopping excursion with us on Wednesday, she’s been mainly laying around. So we went over to Ken’s and he liked his amber guitar lamp I got him even though mom said little Kenny already had one. What’s the difference, I was giving it to big Ken! Ken got the family a new Mac computer with a 22″ monitor-wow-it’s big! I like what we have, though I saw on the screen capture of my old blog that my header was too short which I didn’t even know. Ken put on James Taylor music on the stereo for me which I thought was cute.
Mom didn’t want to go to a nearby shopping center, so we bid her adieu and I went to JoAnn’s and Sean went to Circuit City. Here JoAnn’s was having a big sale (looked like you needed a coupon), but I got adorable Northern Woods ornaments (natural looking) for 75% off. Their pink ticket items were further reduced 50% off. I got an embellishment style cross stitch kit of a koi fish pond for only $5. I think I spent $50 on 30 things-so you know I got some decent buys. I believe the sale is on until tomorrow. I hope to photograph some of the goodies I bought.
We had to drop food and medical stuff off at my Uncle’s before dinner, so we drove in a 50 mile circle going through many towns we haven’t been in for a while. There are a lot of new shopping centers and developments going up. We passed the  restaurant where we had our engagement dinner, a seafood place called Bobby’s 24 yrs ago. Now it’s a Japanese restaurant!
My Uncle is doing okay. Sean thought he didn’t look as good as he looked at the end of December. I had saved and froze for him some portions of chili and spaghetti and Colleen sent him a goodie basket of snacks and cookies plus homemade soup.
Tomorrow is my big dental appointment. I hope to get on here later in the afternoon to update ya’ll.

Good shopping day

j66419.jpgThe ring!My mom drove out by early afternoon (she is staying overnight), so we took a drive up to the outlets in Lancaster which are about 33 miles away. Sean saw that Borders books had a new store in Rockvale (checking closing time on web) and we knew that would be a dangerous place to go. At first we couldn’t find it. We went to one book store, but it was way too expensive. Sean and I left mom in that bookstore and got some Pepperidge Farms goodies next door. Then we went around the corner to the QVC outlet store and my mom bought me two lovely rings! They are sterling silver and the one has all tiny teardrop shaped abalone shells in a pattern on a dome and the other is a ‘bounty of 10 marquise-shaped, colorful gemstones beam atop this stunning sterling silver ring’s tapered band. The stones, which include blue jade, pink jade (mine doesn’t have the pink ), green jade, rhodolite, peridot, and blue topaz, are prong set in two diagonal rows.’ (from QVC website)
  I love them!
We did find Borders and both mom and I did some damage in there. I got a few cross stitch hardback books (like I really need them) and craft books and she got calendars, art books and paperbacks.

We ate at Fuddruckers (a hamburger place) after we had walked around Target. We found out that the woman charged Sean for 3 NFL champion t-shirts instead of the two he actually bought. Don’t worry, I called them up right away when we got home (when he discovered the overcharge) and he has 90 days to get his money back. I told them coming back up there was a lot of trouble for their salesperson making a mistake.

Our last stop-Gap and we had the entire store to ourselves (no one was shopping in this actual bitter winter weather. I got a bunch of long sleeved t-shirts that I love plus a few other things.

So it was a good day and we have lot of books to entertain us if it actually snows this winter!

Where’s the gas?

Standard

We finally found a BP station with gas tonight! The two Luk Oil places didn’t have any gas! My tank was running a little dry and we were getting concerned. I only gas my van up every few weeks as it is. Bri’s the heavy gas user in this family. Now don’t think I’m not also thinking about global warming-but that’s his job, driving around collecting ads for local newspapers. I’d love him to be up in the next town like he was when he first started, but no, they had to send him off to first Maryland (!) and now Lancaster county. He’s put a ton of miles on his Taurus.
Not much new-we hit Wally World as I needed to get out of the house. I got some things for 75% off from the Christmas aisle. Love the silverplated initial ornaments with the crystals I got for the guys for $1.24 each. I got some cute galvanized mini buckets to make into ‘something’ for next year at 30-97¢ each. My best find was a MaryKate/Ashley poufy gold nylon skirt with sparkles throughout and a gold ribbon waist band for Tori. I’ll probably give it to her for her April birthday. : )
I scheduled my very expensive dental work for the 15th-I so want to get it out of the way. I have about 3 cavities, one is under a crown on a dead tooth. So I have to have some bone taken away next to the trouble spot as I need a higher ‘new’ crown. They can’t recycle the old one-too bad. The only good thing is the dentist- Dr. B-only about 28-30. : )

This is going over the St George’s bridge and is a mixture of my reflection and the Delaware Bay. It’s a high bridge!

Ahhh…my favorite bookstore-and I was very selective too!

The address is 1159 Dupont Highway-the month and year of yours truly’s birth! No wonder I like it there!!

We also went to the Dover Mall where Sean and I used some gift cards (we bought a few little things for us and gifts for others). We ate in…where else, The Olive Garden! I also hit A.C. Moore, Dollar Tree and Kohls. I got a little shopping out of the way! And I felt better, but not 100% yet-the guys thought it was funny when I almost walked into a glass wall at FYE!

Takin’ a drive

Standard

After an emotional, worthless day yesterday, I woke up to a nice, sunny day and asked the guys if we could take a drive down to Dover, DE. They said ‘yes’! So we are leaving shortly. It takes an hour to get there and the stores (plus my favorite book warehouse) are open until 8! Guess we’ll go out to eat too. I just needed to see something different. Talk to you later!

Get yourself a wish list

Standard

That’s all I need to say. For the whiners (oh husband, mom, son, siggie other, daughter, you name them!) who say-“I don’t know what to give you for your birthday or Christmas!” Well go to Amazon and type in my email address (i.e.) and viola! There’s a list there if you are inclined to add things to a list, which I do (I do buy things once in a while too). And most things are at a discount! I showed Brian this months ago. Can we say short attention span?

All that driving…

Standard

I guess it’s not that bad-chipmunk cheeks and all (like 4 yrs ago) : ) Mom took the 30 mile drive with me ( that I talked about on Monday) and it seemed faster as she talked the entire time! In fact I had 2.5 days of non-stop chatter. Poor lil thing is by herself too much, I guess. We went to a Dollar General store and mom went crazy in there. She was buying canned goods left and right. I bought a few things and almost put them back when I saw a dead cockroach on the floor. We then went to the Acme supermarket nearer to home and she bought more (I bought some, but we were sharing a cart and she used more of the space then me). She went home at 4:45 and got herself in work traffic for an hour. I told her she should come back for a little while, but she had to get the food home.
It was nice to have her here for a change of pace for both of us. Did I tell you she bought an inflatable bed for her to sleep on now? We have a guest room, but Bri usually ends up in there with all his snoring. He needs to work on that again… I saw that they have throat spray now for snorers. He says I snore too, but he’s been really bad for over 10 yrs.

Audio pleasures and difficulties

Standard

I pulled out the turntable tonight to listen to a record (remember those?) that Brian bought at a booksale and wants to sell. Talk about bringing back memories of my younger days! We both still have large collections-I’d say at least 300 total. A lot of them are in plastic tubs in the basement. The record sounded good, so I popped on another that I had bought and hadn’t listened to. It was a 99¢ one I bought in Doylestown at a record store a few years ago. I’m pretty sure all the Taylor siblings have recordings and this was of James’ late brother Alex. I can surely hear JT in his brother’s voice, the twangy country part that slips out of him once in a while. I feel bad because his brother passed on a few years back and it was a self-induced passing.
I then popped in a cassette and one of the first JT songs was about ‘Alice’, but it was really about ‘Alex’ (well being a big fan, I knew this). Funny that I listened to Alex’s lp and then happened to listen to ‘Hourglass’ that contained that song. I really enjoyed the music for over an hour.
My head has been terrible stopped up, well at least I thought it was. When the weather is chilly and then warms up, I’m in trouble most of the time. My ears were bothering me too, so I put some drops in them-to ‘soften up’ whatever is in there. Now tonight, I am hearing an echo which is strange. I tried to get all the wax medicine out with water. I hope it corrects itself without me having to go to the doctor. I may have cute little shell-shaped ears (that’s from my mom), but they have been troublesome off and on.

Today I decided since it was so nice I’d take a little drive to a local thrift shop. I was disappointed by the high prices and only bought one thing-a pink pressed glass bowl with a lid. When I got home I tackled 8 narcissus bulbs in a little side garden. Thank goodness the ground was soft. I then put some more garden things away. There is so much room in the shed now. Brian should have cleaned it out years ago.
The guys got homemade turkey meatballs and spaghetti for dinner.
