Yucky and yummy

Standard

ToidySo what’s the worst thing that could happen to you that is house related? Not as bad as a fire, something you can clean up. What happened-Sean used too much toilet paper and I went in to use the facility. The water looked low, but I was in a hurry. I went to flush and you guessed it-geyser time! I was in my bare feet at least, but in my good dress slacks. I started yelling-get the plunger. Brian happened to have stepped outside. So Sean went running for the plunger just when the toidy let out a big gurgle and down ‘it’ went! We had water going through the floor into the basement. I had to first clean up the water with paper towels and then went over everything with antibacterial wipes-my poor back! We don’t have a huge bathroom, thank goodness. I have the little rugs to wash-tomorrow.

Bri went to the grocery store with me. He decided to go to the ‘cheaper’ store, which was really crowded. It was late, like 3:30 by that time. I decided to do a pasta salad with cut up turkey ham in it. Bri saw stewed tomatoes and wanted some. When I got home I cooked up the penne and the guys decided they wanted the stewed tomatoes and cut up ham on top of that (Sean doesn’t like mayo much). They loved it! I had what I originally envisioned-penne, ham, with mayo, dill, cheddar cheese and a bit of onion-plus a croissant. Not bad.

Tonight I enjoyed reading the People magazine about the Oscars with Patrick Dempsey and his new twin boys on the cover. So cute.

Tomorrow the snowbaby display in the big living room window is finally coming down and getting replaced with a spring display! I like the idea of switching it out every few months.

Artichokes and Persimmons

Standard

I am learning so much from the Rachael Ray show! Yesterday a doctor was on and talked of the benefits of the above foods for your cholesterol. I like artichoke hearts the best. My dinner last night had a few in it. I have a triglycerides issue and fish oil repeats on me. Now I don’t think I’ve ever had persimmons. I bet there is persimmons jam? Do you believe the average American eats 156 pounds of sugar a year! Wow-that is terrible. It’s hidden in so many foods.

I changed my blog style as I was looking for one with tabs at the top for addition pages. I think this style is even more organized. Wish my house was that way-everything where it should be or in see-through plastic boxes stacked alphabetically and labeled. I was in ‘the room’ that I want to craft in-OMG what a disaster. I have so much to go through. I have to sanitize the room as it’s the one that gets water in it when we have too much rain. I think I’ll get Brian to the Home Depot to get a new light fixture to start off with. At the same time he can get a new toilet to replace the 47 yr old ‘water waster’ we have upstairs. Wish me luck!

Yeah Abigail!

Standard

I was flipping channels after our dinner fiasco last night and found the Critic Choice awards. Abigail Breslin from ‘Little Miss Sunshine’ received an award for ‘Best Young Actress’. The teen who played her brother won for ‘Best Young Actor’. The movie won a few more awards too.

Update 1-23

Looks what 10 yr old is a nominee for a Best Actress Oscar!

Could Abigail pull a Tatum O’Neal and win an Oscar as a child?
Woo hoo!

So after church Sean wanted to go to a new Olive Garden down near Christiana, Delaware. When we got there it was mobbed and there was a hour to an hour and 45 minutes wait. Needless to say, we left. All the three other restaurants we tried were packed. It was cold as heck last night and we thought people would stay in their nice warm houses-wrong!  We finally went into a crowded place at 6:45 which was like diner. Some older man was in line and for some reason said; ‘women don’t want to cook anymore’. I thought that was totally uncalled for. What we had was fair-my turkey was dry around the edges. I have a whole turkey to cook down in the freezer and should get that out and make a yummy hot turkey sammie that I won’t let dry out. Is there any good restaurant food anymore?I’m still working on bags and boxes from the basement. I am going through gift wrap, bows, tags, etc. I got rid of a huge bag of squooshed bows, wrinkled wrap and tissue, you name it! I see a slight improvement.

Snoring is an issue

Standard

So I could relate to Dr. ‘McDreamy’ not being able to sleep with Meredith because of her snoring on Grey’s Anatomy tonight. Bri says I snore too, but not like he does when the roof sounds like it will cave in. I always wonder if I will trip over a pile of wood in the morning from all the ‘sawing’ that is going on during the night. Unfortunately, we have had trouble sleeping together for a while. I’m hoping we can get over that. I could relate to Meredith when she said that Derrick sleeping somewhere else causes her to have abandonment issues. (She also has a father that left her). I guess these things make the show seem more real to me.

It was a cleaning day here after my mom left around 2. I thought I had packed up the last of the Christmas stuff (I am sorting older things and consolidating them) when I found yet another two bags of stuff. I found adorable Martha Stewart mini jingle bell candy canes and Christmas trees still wired to their packaging. I also found all of Sean’s Disney characters that I use to collect for him when he was little. You should see the trash for tomorrow! I asked Brian to bring up a crate that was haphazardly resting on two stacked chairs (yep it’s that bad in the cave). The crate contains Halloween stuff! So now I’m going in reverse. I don’t plan to save too much of it, but Bri had a laugh when he said a skeleton hand was sticking out from under the lid of the crate. ; )

Butterfly Paradise

Standard

We have a bay window facing the backyard in our family room. The family room was the garage at one time. Why waste a big window facing the road when you can view a peaceful backyard? I have a butterfly bush planted under the window here. It’s as tall as the house and attracting a ton of butterflies. Right now I see a yellow shallowtail on it. I can’t even see the pond, but it’s nice to see the pretty purple blooms and the ‘flutterbys’.
I planted the 4 iris rhizomes yesterday and am expecting 10 more next month. My hibiscus seeds started to pop out of the pots. I planted10 and 6 are coming up. All the new plants benefited from the storm that went through here at 4 am.
I was just outside showing the guy where to pump out the septic tank. That’s country living for you though we now could get public water and sewer. Maybe someday if it becomes a problem. It’s the law to get them pumped every few years. Our toilets haven’t been flushing all the way and the shower isn’t draining that well. This should help as they pump out 1,000 gallons of waste.
I hope you saw the shows on the Titanic last night on the Discovery Channel. They were really good. Just when you think you have heard or seen everything about the Titanic, something new is unearthed. James Cameron, the director of Titanic, went down to the wreck again and had smaller robots to view parts of the ship that haven’t been seen before. They got to see the Turkish baths! The tile was still in good shape after 93 yrs! It was so neat. The other show talked about the building of the Titanic which was interesting and ‘reinacted’ very well. Five years of work for a ship that sunk in less than 3 hours.

The invasion of the nocturnal winged creatures…

Standard

This happens every year when the first warm day of the year rolls around which was a few days ago. These flying ant like things come marching up through the vents (or some place) and start walking all over the walls, our heads, the cat’s tail, you name it. It took me two hours to fall asleep that night as I had the feeling like something was crawling all over me.
To put things into prospective this room use to be the attached garage. We had a number of people (family, friends, paid people) who helped turned it into a nice big family room we desperately needed 12 years ago. The driveway use to go all the way up to the house (of course), but Brian knocked a big block of it away-thus the problem with the bugs-he never really sealed the cracks under the broken driveway. I thought he did. I thought at least Bri looked at it. He didn’t really do anything all these years. I went out today and moved a rock and there was a fairly big hole. He’s gonna have to move his butt and get gravel and cement to seal that area up where the garage door use to be.
We even put screens over the vents in here and the bugs are still finding their way in. If something isn’t done, they will invade a few more times and I have to suck up all their little carcasses and they make my vacuum smell like citronella. Gross.

‘Finger Food’ and Skunks

Standard

The last few days have provided enough ‘gross out’ for everyone concerning the digit found in the chili. We were discussing how it got in the chili in the first place. I think it was planted there by a disgruntled employee who may have been in a gang. Someone else said maybe the woman who had it in her food is a weirdo and planted it to sue Wendy’s. I know how they make the chili-the burger comes from ‘leftover’ patties that were probably cooked too long. Someone who was an employee at the chain years ago ‘enlightened’ us about how it is made.
Tonight I was sorting through my cross stitch stuff (sitting on the floor) looking for another project and it started to get really stinky in here. Brian happen to be sitting next to me in the lounge chair. I was blaming his feet! But then it dawned on it that it was more of a skunky aroma. So we opened the front door and it was like 100 skunks had lifted their butts to our house! We can’t understand why it’s smelling so much in here, all the windows are shut. Maybe it sprayed on one of the basement windows, or I hope it didn’t stumble in the window well outside one of them! I was actually wearing a painter’s mask for a while. Phew!
