Wuss report

Standard

Donny and MarieI was watching Oprah today and the entire Osmond family was on-all 125 of them flew in to be on the show in Chicago. Marie is a month older than me. I watched the Donny and Marie show, mostly while babysitting. I was compared to her and my younger brother Don to Donny. We both could sing-dance, not so much. So here’s when I get all wet in the eyes-when they showed the brothers all singing, ‘He Ain’t Heavy, he’s my brother’ with old videos in the background (the 70s was not a good decade for costume design). The one brother Alan isn’t well and had a chair behind him, but he performed and smiled as always. Then it occurred to me, I’m in that age group and they were celebrating 50 yrs of performing!

I like the doll Marie had made for Oprah-her as a little girl. I’d love one of me! Too cute. I also felt bad as they had just lost their dad and when Donny cries, well I’m going to cry too. I did notice that one of Donny’s nephews looks just like him, more than his own sons. Funny how genetics works. Good luck on your tour guys! Marie, no more fainting.

The 6 degrees of separation game-actually 2 with Marie! Seems that when she was in the tour of ‘The Sound of Music’ back in the 90s, that the costume designer, the late Jonathan Bixby did this show and he graduated from high school with me! I am also a couple of degrees from John Travolta (I did ‘meet’ him at a car show in Philly as a teen and got his autograph) and Todd Robinson, from my class directed him in a movie lately; and Kate Jackson, an actress from my class, Denice Hicks was in a movie with her and Janine Turner. I talk to Denice on MySpace and she’s really sweet. Neat,huh?

BTW, I was a Bobby Sherman and Hudson Brother fan back in the day.

Thanks

Thanks for your comments and emails. I’m a bit drained today and not feeling well in the tummy, but I’m doing things like washing clothes and vacuuming. I need to go to the store, but can’t seem to walk a straight line, let alone drive. My ‘helper’ is going to have to go with me, and I know how he just loves that, not.

My flowers bit the dust overnight, well all of them except the salmon nemesia that was in with the more fragile wax begonia which are almost unrecognizable now from the freeze. My little sunny pinwheel zinnias were almost spinning yesterday and just starting to droop today. I do have some miniature roses on the front step and one has the most perfect ivory colored rose-I should get a photo of it.

I got a nice magazine yesterday (at what must be the biggest bookstore in the area)-Paper Crafts Holiday card making issue. In the back they have some holiday sayings and this struck my fancy as I am sure you will like it too:

What is Christmas? It is tenderness for the past, courage for the present, hope for the future. It is a fervent wish that every cup may overflow with blessings rich and eternal, and that every path may lead to peace.
~Agnes. M. Pharo

Look at the pamphlet I got in the mail-please notice the blue suede shoes under the tree. If you have $120.00 kicking around, why not pick up one (my comic relief for the afternoon!) I do know one person who may like this as she’s a big fan of ‘The King’.

Just like the 60s

Well protesting is a very 60s thing. I remember watching the news and all the signs and people walking in circles. Seems the Writer’s Guild of America are striking for bigger cuts of DVD sales. Local girl Tina Fey (from Upper Darby, PA) was right out in the thick of things in the Rockefeller Plaza area yesterday. This happen to be one of the places near where we stayed in June and wanted to see.

Tina-you picket girl!

I guess we’ll be stuck watching re-runs for a while maybe? There’s a Leno show on now that was on just last week! I may catch up on some movies.

They know who murdered Officer Cassidy now and he’s on the loose. They found the officer’s gun at the guy’s house. The guy use to work at another Dunkin Donuts and they think he had held up this same one before.  Update-Lewis was found in Miami and is in custody! Thank goodness!

Anyone sick of political ads? We don’t have that many this time around, but we have to listen to ads for southern Jersey too. And the phone calls are comical too. This one lady, Maureen Lally-Green is running for the PA Supreme court and I think of lollipop every time I hear her name. Dianne, think of the issues for goodness sakes!

What’s in the local news

Standard

Seems the residents of Willistown, PA didn’t like film maker M. Night Shyamalan’s 8 foot deer fence around his sprawling property and made a stink about it last year. Hey, I wouldn’t mind having a deer fence around a big portion of my yard, but I don’t have 123 acres either. Yesterday, Shyamalan (who lives about 18 miles from here) was allowed to keep it. I guess he was getting tired of redoing his landscaping. Glad it wasn’t an issue about crop circles!

Say it ain’t so

That I am still pulling weeds in the middle of September! Usually by now I say the heck with it. I have to admit that I did the front area where people look as they pass the house. I filled up two garden carts with weeds, mostly those long grasses. Now my pretty blue and peach salvia are making a nice show. I promise a photo. I gave up weeding after an hour as my back was hurting. I am also pleased with my ‘trash grabs’; remember when Sean and I went to the nursery a few months back and the lady gave me plants she was tossing? They both are blooming-pink and white trumpet flowers-one is the Mandevilla and the other is very similar, but the leaves are a bit different.

When I came in I decided to make the gown for my ‘Mommy paper doll’. My friend gave me the body template and I used the photo of my mom when she was about 20. I assembled the body with brads and painted it too. The dress is made from some of the scrap paper I got in the mail yesterday. Her belt and shoes were made from a band from a candy box. Her belt and bag have butterfly accents. I think she looks like she is ready to go to the Emmys (you all are getting a sneak peek)!

And here’s her journal with her initials and the first page that I did for her:

I worked on my ’57 Thunderbird (Love Quilts) while watching the Emmys. It was in ‘the round’ and I felt bad for winners like James Spader who said they were the ‘worst seats he ever had’. I was glad Katherine Heigl from Grey’s Anatomy won. It was neat to see some of the cast from ‘Roots’ which was a miniseries 30 yrs ago when I graduated from high school. I didn’t know that Edward Albert, Jr (Butterflies are Free) had passed away last September-the ‘In Memorium’ showed his picture. I looked him up and he was only 55 and had lung cancer. His dad had passed on in ’06 at 96! Eddie Jr took care of his dad for 10 yrs. I liked both of them a lot.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We went to church this morning as we thought Father M needed help as the ‘main’ usher was in a car accident last week in Virginia. We had heard he bruised or broke his ribs, but he was in the hospital. We have known Chris and his family for at least 10 years and when we saw him standing there today, well I just had to give him a hug! I think I surprised him! Later he told Bri that the rear axle on his Ford Explorer had broken when he was going about 55 mph! He rolled over at least 2-3 times and doesn’t remember anything except waking up when the paramedics were talking to him. I think he’s one lucky guy!
So many anniversaries
Standard
Elvis-gone 30 years. Happened right after I graduated from high school. Princess Diana-10 years-we had just gotten online and I remember all the message boards expressing sympathy. And now 9/11-6 yrs.  That was a scary day for so many of us, not knowing what was happening. Sean was a freshman in high school. I wanted to go get him to keep him safe. I couldn’t stop looking up at the sky since I’m sure a few of those planes weren’t that far away. We all remember that day.
You are suppose to drive around today with your headlights on to show you remember too.
Merv
Standard
I was sorry to read that Merv Griffin lost his battle against prostate cancer on Sunday. That is the cancer that has left my uncle with a defective bladder from the radiation treatments. What do I remember about Merv-his talk show! My grandmom use to watch it all the time, so I would too. He had a great singing voice and could play the piano, but he didn’t do either that much on his show if I recall. I remember his announcer and sidekick Arthur Treacher (fish and chips guy) and Charo. Why is it that so many talk show hosts need to sit behind a desk? (Mike Douglas, who had his talk show in Philly, which I went to a few times, didn’t have a desk). So Merv thought of Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! out of the blue and both are still on (I like Jeopardy better). Merv was on some reality show within the last few years, I can’t remember which one, but seeing him again brought back memories of his old talk show and how good it was…and now, the dear boy himself (A.Treacher)…has gone to rest.
Close encounters
Standard
Tonight around 7 pm, I stepped out the back door to check plants and there about 40 off feet in front of me was a deer, probably eating the little sour green apples on the ground. I’ll say ‘she’. She turned around and went down the hill a bit. I started talking to her like I do Cosmo, in a high sweet voice. She moved her ears like she was tuning in. She walked on a little and stopped and listened as I walked down to the patio. She flipped her white tail and casually walked on like she was tame. They usually run away fast as lightning. Of course I was thinking about my ‘dear’ grandmom today as she passed on 7 yrs ago.
We watched the special on William and Harry the Princes tonight. Everyone my age watched them grow up like our own children. They are pretty nice young men. They were interviewed by Matt Lauer. There will be a charity concert in their mum’s honor on July 1st which would have been Diana’s 46th birthday.
Passings
Standard
I was just checking out my side bar links and clicked on ‘Drawn!’. Their top story was the passing of artist Charley Harper. Many of his whimsical drawings were made into cross stitch charts like this (which I own):
Charley Harper
Last week a fellow high school alumni, but in the class above me (1976) passed on. Milton was neighbor of mine and was a talented student with tons of personality. His mom is a gem who always stopped to talk to you and show an interest in your well being. So my mom read that he was in shows with Merv Griffin and movies like ‘Prince of Tides’ (with Barbra Streisand). I didn’t know this. He was also in Paul DiMeo’s class (Extreme Makeover: Home Edition). Milton hadn’t been in movies since ’92.
I was sad to read about these talented people passing on.
