This almost century old conservatory shelters many varieties of gorgeous plants, which include orchids, from the elements outside, whether it is heat or cold. There is a maze of different rooms from a desert room to an bonsai room. There’s always something new to see each time I go, which is frequently.

Longwood’s Conservatory is one of the world’s great greenhouse structures. It shelters 20 indoor gardens and 5,500 types of plants. The Conservatory was built in 1919 and has been periodically expanded and renovated. At present, there are 195,668 square feet—or 4.5 acres—of covered display, production, and research greenhouses.

Yesterday, I bought my first trunk load of flowers. I had saved a bunch of money from eBay sales. Loews was having a buy one get one free on 6″ pots and had a few other good sales. I bought most of my plants at a local nursery because you get a lot for the price. Here I am happy to be in gardener mode again-

  1. That was a great deal on the flowers and I’ve no doubt that you’ll be a happy gardener once again:-) We can’t buy flowers here until the end of May since there’s still chances of frost until then. I so enjoyed reading about the Longwood Conservatory, I didn’t realize it was built so long ago! Would love to be able to walk inside!! xoxo

  2. Have fun with those flowers!

I wish I were as at ease in pictures as you are! I sent a self-pic to my parents recently and the only response I got was from my father: There are people who take good pictures, and then there’s you.

  3. Barb-thanks for the compliments-Bri took about 6-7 shots and this was the only one I really liked. Sean usually has better 1-2 shot deals. I like the photos of you I’ve seen. My advice would be to think of the camera as one of the kids or pets. : )

  4. I am so jealous…. our botanical garden is great, but does not have the conservatories for exotic plants. In winter, they have to make up for it with a very large camellia garden. I’ve seen the giant poinsettias in these at Longwood once… a sight never to be forgotten. Mine is here.

  5. You really do get to plant flowers much earlier than I do. It’s always so exciting to get them all planted. Those pansies look huge!

I was looking longinly at those cannas in the Longwood photo.

    Have fun planting!

  6. Beautiful photo of yourself with the flowers…so colorful.

Stop by my photo hunt if you get a chance.
