Friday’s Show and Tell

Standard

Over 25 years ago, my then fiance and I were browsing through a bookstore and we ran across The Fannie Farmer cookbook in paperback. I thumbed through it and asked Brian if he’d buy it for me as a gift. I probably said I would like to practice some of the recipes, so he did buy it. From the condition of the poor book, you can see it has been a standby-like for how to cook a certain cut of meat or a vegetable. It even has duct tape holding it together. I would say I used it a lot for baking, by far my favorite kitchen activity.
This past Christmas, he bought me the Martha Stewart Cookie cookbook off my wish list. I needed it like a ‘hole in the head’ (as my cookbooks run in the 100s), but I love to bake cookies. I haven’t started to use it yet, but will!

A newer cookbook gift from Brian

Terry mentioned she gets recipes mostly off the internet now-I’m guilty of that too! But there is something about holding a book and looking at a photo of something that looks good and trying to replicate it.

I have the tv on Conan O’Brien and the last gig was a ‘balloon guy’ named John Cassidy. I took a peek and here it was this guy we use to see perform at the St. David’s Fair over the years. Check out this link-he holds the Guinness World Record for making the most balloon animals in one hour! Pretty neat to see him on national tv after seeing him roam the grounds of a church fair.
My friend’s ex-husband and his partner have been on Conan too-they parody Country Western singers using the names Doyle and Debby.

  1. Yummy… that cookie cookbook looks like such fun! I have a different cookie cookbook my Dad bought me before I got married. I should try out some of those recipes! πŸ™‚

  2. I have this cook book too somewhere in my garage in a box! I must have bought it over 25 years ago! I can remember when I was first married looking through it trying the recipes.
    Thanks for sharing!
    Love, Ann

  3. I have had a lot of cookbooks myself, if I’d only known you like to collect them, I would have sent you a lot of them just this year when I downsized everything in my kitchen. I kept only a few of them since I no longer use recipes…I know all my favorites by heart by now.

My show n tell is finally posted. It’s not much this week, but it’s something. LOL

  4. I have that Fannie Farmer book, too! And my very first cookbook – The Joy of Cooking (2 volumes in paperback). I like to collect those small community or fundraiser cookbooks, so I’d scour local Goodwills and Salvation Army stores around here, and my mom would send me books from Philly, but I ran out of space very quickly!

  5. Fannie Farmer is the one cookbook I don’t have and have always wanted. I have been trying to be good and not aquire anymore as my cookbook cupboard overfloweth…

  6. Enjoy the new cookbook, Dianne. I also love them, but am partial to the “vintage” ones and ones that have odd recipes. I have one with possum casserole, for example. It totally cracks me up.

  7. Cookbooks are addictive, aren’t they? I agree, even though I love browsing through recipes on the internet when the mood strikes me, there is still nothing like actual books to page through. Okay…I’m ready to see some cookies now! πŸ™‚

  8. I have my stand-by Betty Crocker paperback that is in the same condition!! I mostly use the internet now, too! Always something new, you know??
    Thanks for sharing!

  9. I have the FF cookbook, too. If I remember correctly it has a very good cooked chocolate fudge frosting. It’s been years since I’ve made it.

I bet Martha’s cookie book has a lot of tasty recipes. You will have to give us a review as you bake them.

  10. That’s great you love to cook and bake! I won a Taste of Homes cookbook and made a cheeseburger soup recipe for the first time today. I thought it tasted great!
